ARCHIVED Dd Probably Has Celiac Disease; Have Questions
Guhlia replied to ptkds's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you're testing her, she needs to remain on gluten until the testing is completed. Please keep in mind that at that age her tests are likely to be negative, even if she does have Celiac. False negatives are very common in children on both the blood tests and on the biopsies. You may be interested in Enterolab (www.Enterolab.com). They seem to be more accurate... -
ARCHIVED Rice
Guhlia replied to Lister's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Is it Kraft minute rice? If so, they will clearly list gluten on the ingredient label. I use the Minute white rice all the time with no problems. -
Okay, my mom has been sick with IBS for as long as I can remember, but she recently has gotten REALLY sick. She has been diagnosed with IBS and diverticulitis (sp?) and is also on antidepressants for some stressful stuff going on at home. She also just had a colonoscopy that revealed a pre-cacerous pollyp (sp?) which they removed. She has now had the Celiac...

ARCHIVED Peanut Butter Cookies
Guhlia replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I agree with the others. Your oven is too hot. Try reducing the temperature by 25-50 degrees. You may want to halve the recipe so that if it's another catostrophe you can just chuck it. These cookies will not get the finished appearance of a traditional peanut butter cookie, they do look a little funny. They are yummy though and well worth the effort. Bake... -
I keep all my flours in a drawer in my refrigerator. I bake all the time, so it's nice to have them all together in the fridge. That way I'm sure they aren't going to go bad on me. When I make up the flour mixes, I generally make huge portions at a time. We go through a lot of flour though now that my daughter and husband are gluten free. I make him pizzas...

ARCHIVED Can I Ask Your Opinion?
Guhlia replied to tracey*'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have had most of the symptoms you mentioned. I am a Celiac. It sounds to me like you've found your answer. Glad you're feeling better (aside from the glutening). This forum is wonderful. Welcome! -

ARCHIVED Peanut Butter Cookies
Guhlia replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ok... YUM!!! I halved the sugar for the recipe and instead crushed up gluten free Oreo-style cookies and added them to the mixture. They are fabulous! The cookie bits really add some depth to the flavor without overpowering it. *Very good with a cup of iced coffee* -
ARCHIVED Peanut Butter Cookies

Let us know how they turn out! I think I'm going to try making mine today with half the sugar and maybe I'll add something... I'll post later with what I did... -
ARCHIVED Internet Purchasing
Guhlia replied to bmzob's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My favorite site for gluten free shopping is www.shopbydiet.com. They have SO many different specialty foods. I also LOVE www.kinnikinnick.com for my baking needs, breads, and cookies. -
ARCHIVED Peanut Butter Cookies
Guhlia replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Personally, I prefer this flourless PB cookie over any other version of PB cookie I've ever made or eaten. I think it's much better without the flour. The texture was soft like what I remember Soft Batch cookies feeling like in my mouth and the flavor was nothing but PB. Yum! -

This is the recipe that's in the Hagman book. It is excellent! -
Okay guys, the recipe in Bette Hagmans' Gluten Free Gourmet called Peanut Butter Drops is to die for! It is so much better than what I remember "real" peanut butter cookies tasting like. The best part is that it only uses three ingredients, none of which were flour!!! So, if you have this recipe, try it if you like PB cookies. If you don't have the recipe...

ARCHIVED Glutano Caramel Crunch Cookies
Guhlia replied to Nantzie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Nancy, I'm soooooooooo glad you like the nuggets. They were definitely enjoyed in our household too. Now I need to get my act together and make another batch so my husband can try them. He was out of town at the time. The filling in mine was definitely caramel colored, not white. It had an odd texture though, kind of like the filling used in Goetz caramel... -
ARCHIVED Glutano Caramel Crunch Cookies
Guhlia replied to Nantzie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Nancy, I'm so sorry you didn't enjoy them. My mother got me a box for Christmas last year and these were the absolutely most phenomenal cookies I've ever indulged upon. The caramel was definitely not white, though it was slighly butterscotchy in nature. They were my very favorite of all the store bought treats! I hope if you decide to give them a shot again... -

ARCHIVED Muscle Relaxers
Guhlia replied to Corkdarrr's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Flexorall was prescribed to me in the early stages of GI trouble, before i was ever diagnosed. They thought that my muscle tightness was causing the cramping and contributing to the D. I found that the Flex actually made it much harder to get to the bathroom on time and I didn't notice any improvement in symptoms. Every person reacts differently to medications... -
ARCHIVED Red Bull
Guhlia replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, Red Bull helps, especially if it's just a mild glutening. It doesn't help with the D or any of the GI symptoms, but it helps with the brain fog and the exhaustion. When I get glutened I usually drink Gatorade and Red Bull, coffee and sodas just make the D worse (for me). -
Has anyone seen it? What does it do? Just curious since it's $40.

ARCHIVED Need Pre-school Snack Ideas!
Guhlia replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I believe it's only the nacho cheese flavor Doritos that have gluten in them, not the flavors that I read in the suggestions (such as cool ranch). Post cocoa pebbles are gluten free (at least they were). Lays Stax are gluten free, but Pringles are not. -
Thanks for the laugh, Paulina!

Welcome, Spunky!!! So glad you're beginning to feel better.

Oh my gosh, Ursula and Jules, I am funny about having my head touched too. I always thought that I was the only one. I cut my own hair as well because I can't stand having someone else touch it. I'm a horrible hair stylist, so I just shave it with a clippers. Hence the short haircut...

ARCHIVED How Has The Forum Helped You?
Guhlia replied to CarlaB's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
There are probably too many things to list for me... Here are a few of the biggies: 1. I learned that there's a whole host of other people with this disease, and I am really not alone, no matter how alone I sometimes feel. 2. Cross contamination is a BIG deal and I never would have realized this without this forum. 3. Hair and body products have...
