ARCHIVED House Tv Show Will Feature Celiac Disease
jaten replied to irish's topic in Publications & Publicity
I am so sorry for you, nini. That must have been really scary. I've heard of people having seizures with gluten, but didn't know that was a symptom you had. I think the only reason I ever got diagnosed was because my body decided to take the "classic celiac symptoms" route. If celiac is affecting the lady they showed with seizures on the preview, that... -
Memphis in May is always huge fun. I'm not sure I'll get to any of the events other than the Sunset Symphony this year, but that's tremendous fun. I just googled the Ponderosa Stomp, as I wasn't at all familiar with this. WOW! Looks like great music!!! If I hadn't just had surgery this week, I'd be there in a heartbeat! Wouldn't ya know....the year...

ARCHIVED House Tv Show Will Feature Celiac Disease
jaten replied to irish's topic in Publications & Publicity
Ok, those of you who watched last night's episode, (Wed., nite). Did you see the previews for next week? I'm not sure how Celiac is going to tie in with what I saw in the previews. I hope we're not excited for nothing. Anyone? -
ARCHIVED Spaghetti Squash Anyone?
jaten replied to Cheri A's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Have been eating it for years....long before I'd even heard of Celiac. Yummmy! Anything I'd do with pasta, I've just about done with Spaghetti Squash. -
You're welcome. Please do post back or pm me. I'll be anxious to hear about any dining experiences good or bad. I live about 70 miles south of Memphis, and my husband and I get there fairly often.

ARCHIVED Kinnikinnick.....
jaten replied to jaten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Right, because the world knows Celiacs must not eat glucose Looks like you and 2Boys4Me are offering about the same pronunciation and majority rules! And, since the nice lady on the phone said so, it must be. Woo Hoo!!! Thanks y'all. Good bye KinnyKinick....Hello Ka-nick-ka-nick -
ARCHIVED Email From K C Materpiece Bbq Sause
jaten replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know....I usually dodge manufacturers who tell me their product is/isn't gluten-free when I can tell from their response that they don't even know what gluten is. Gluten from corn starch???? I love the product; I don't trust the information. -
Ditto Wolfie's post. Zojirushi! I like Gluten-Free Pantry's Favorite Sandwich Bread a lot. Right now Pamela's Amazing Wheat Free Bread mix is my favorite (GFP bread above is a close 2nd imo)

Ebrbetty, did your dr. give you anything to help with the slow emptying? Mine came back normal, but dr. said he had expected it to be slow. In fact had hoped it would have been that vs gallbladder because then he could give me med to aid in proper emptying. I don't know what it would have been since it was a non-issue for me; it might be worth pursuing...

ARCHIVED Kinnikinnick.....
jaten replied to jaten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ahhh, thank you all. And the extra bit of trivia is much appreciated, too....I had wondered. One final question, which syllable(s) get the emphasis? -
Oh my gosh! YES! I know that feeling. I was in your shoes for weeks, but am getting it under control. (Somewhere is my post about this, it hurt side to side and top to bottom. Horribly!) Consider this, it's unlikely that one problem is causing pain in this entire area. What other foods are you intolerant to? For me, I had discovered before that...

ARCHIVED Kinnikinnick.....
jaten posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ok, I've finally figured out how many Ns and how many Ks and the general order of the letters. Now for my next feat..... How do you pronounce Kinnikinnick? Please someone who knows, give me a clue. I've always said KINny kinick -
ARCHIVED Cereal
jaten replied to 11111's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Another hand goes up for Nature's Path Envirokidz. My personal favorite are the Panda Puffs; the Koala Crisps are also good, but a very chocolate way to start the morning. These are both very sweet cereals. I usually eat Enjoy Life, but then you're into the $5 for the little box that you were wanting to enjoy. -
ARCHIVED What Type Of Doctor Do You See Regarding Your celiac disease?
jaten replied to glutenexpat's topic in Doctors
Celiac physical care from a GI Celiac knowledge and emotional support hugely from this board. -
What kind of stomach pain? Where is the pain located? My dr. prescribed NuLev for severe cramping that goes with Celiac (and IBS). It helps with a general mild stomach "yugh" feeling also. More information is needed so that we can answer your question more precisely.

Oh, could I have given you a long list of places to eat prior to our gluten-free days!!!! I have eaten successfully at the Outback Rest. on Hack's Cross Rd. There is a Bonefish Grill, (I can check address), but I've only eaten there once, and that was unsuccessful There is also a Carrabba's on Poplar and a Flemmings' Steak House on Poplar (Flemming's...

CC = cross contamination -
Basically, refractory sprue means that despite a strict gluten-free diet the villi do not heal over time. A steroid (predniosne, etc.) is the treatment for refractory sprue. It can, however, be very difficult to treat.

GreySaber, I do not eat the "Hot" chili. I am quite certain that I would experience gastro problems with that. I prefer the mild. Yeah, I think it could be the spices that your system is objecting to. Another thought, what else do you typically accompany your chili with? Could it be something on the side? -
Yep, all of that is my understanding as well. Only point I'm not sure of is whether or not "sprue" is an older term. May be. I just know that my GI prefers that to Celiac. You know I don't even remember why. He did tell me, but he definitely uses "Sprue" and sometimes "Celiac Sprue" in reference to my disease, but he doesn't use "Celiac."

Van's Waffles Blue Diamond Nut Thins Barbara's Puffins Cereal (Honey Rice, I think) Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal; not Hot Rice Cereal...but really, really believe it was CC (I have a lot of trouble with Amy's but consider it due to the soy.) In response to GreySaber: I use Hormel products, and they are one of the few major products that... -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Here Have A Pda?
jaten replied to frenchiemama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Then Vincent's advice is still good. Either a Windows-based or a Palm-based pda will meet your needs. The preference will be somewhat personal. I think Palm is the way to go. Others will swear by their Pocket PC or Windows CE systems. I love my Palm-based Treo. Do you have cell service? Then you might want to consider a "smart phone" something like... -
ARCHIVED Fajita/tortilla Shells
jaten replied to awesomeame's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you for the info, lonewolf! Peeling into layers was exactly what happened, and soon.... Great idea to ask the HFS to hold some out for me. I'll do that. It's a small store, and I don't remember that they even had a cooler....just freezer or shelf. Do you think they need refrigerating? The package gave no directions for storage. -
ARCHIVED Great Value Foods?
jaten replied to gointribal's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
But I have a question....since there are no laws governing "gluten free" labeling in the U.S., what does the label mean? I occasionally buy some gluten-free products from Great Value and other manufacturers, but I don't really trust these labels. How do others deal with this ungoverned label?? -
ARCHIVED Fajita/tortilla Shells
jaten replied to awesomeame's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I, too, had been looking for a tortilla. I used to love the flour ones. For some reason, all the corn tortillas make my stomach hurt really bad. I've tried about 1/2 doz., of the different brands mentioned on this board. I can eat other corn-based products with no problems, but not corn tortillas! (Wish someone would figure that one out for me.) Anyway...
