ARCHIVED Even People Who"know" Don't Know
GlutenFreeAl replied to chrissy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So what, you're like a diabetic? I've gotten that too. I think "allergy" is the best way to explain it concisely and to have it taken seriously. People are aware of food "allergies" because of that poor girl who just died from kissing her peanut butter-eating boyfriend. But food intolerances? What a whiney bunch we are! -
ARCHIVED Even People Who"know" Don't Know
GlutenFreeAl replied to chrissy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Or, "Gluten intolerance, huh? My mom is lactose intolerant and she eats ice cream anyway." Love that one. I find oftentimes that I tell people, inaccurately, that I have a wheat allergy. I've found that I don't get as many asinine questions (What happens when you eat gluten?) or dumb comments (gluten is like fat, right?) Anyone else fudge the truth... -
ARCHIVED Reese's Valentine Hearts Not gluten-free
GlutenFreeAl replied to WGibs's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think the solution, as painful as it can be, is to avoid those community candy dishes at the office, because you can never read the labels. I pretty much only eat something if I've purchased it myself or verified for certain that it is gluten free. Because boy does it suck to get sick at work. And was it worth it? Not usually. Keep your own stash... -
ARCHIVED Reese's Valentine Hearts Not gluten-free

They're AWESOME dipped in Nutella, as I discovered at breakfast this morning... I'm such a pig sometimes! -
ARCHIVED Reese's Valentine Hearts Not gluten-free
GlutenFreeAl replied to WGibs's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Bummer dude. Love the Reese cups. I'm glad you decided to randomly check too. Thanks for the warning. The Dove hearts, on the other hand, are gluten free and quite tasty. Don't you love holidays invented by the candy companies? -
I'm glad you brought this up. Mmm...I miss baklava...

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed: Trying To Make It Work With Food Plan
GlutenFreeAl replied to wilbragirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Nini, I looked at that website and their stuff looks WONDERFUL. Have you tried any of it? What do you recommend? I'm still hesitant to pay exhorbitant shipping charges for food that most of the general population can go buy at the corner convenience store... -
ARCHIVED Waking Up Every Hour To Pee
GlutenFreeAl replied to wilbragirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Shari, I've noticed that I have the same problem when I get glutened. I literally pee every 30 minutes or so. I also get really hyper and can't sleep. When I'm off gluten, I only get up once or twice during the night to pee (still seems excessive, but that's how my bladder works!) Are you sure you've eliminated all sources of gluten from your... -
I'm thinking it might be a good idea - I've very paranoid about all of the vitamins and minerals that are probably absent from my diet. I've definitely seen a negative effect not only on my weight, but also in my hair and eyesight! Anyone have any luck with a dietician? Any advice for finding a good one? Thanks, Al

ARCHIVED Canker Soars?
GlutenFreeAl replied to jessika393's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I used to get canker sores ALL the time, but they're not as frequent now that I'm gluten free. (Except when I bite myself like an idiot!) I've never taken medicine for them, but hurricane gel numbs them really well so you can at least eat. You can find that with the baby dental stuff. Good luck! People who don't get them have no idea how bad it hurts... -
Thanks Laurie, I actually already bought some. It was like $7 at Feel-Rite. Do you guys take this every night? Only when you can't fall asleep? What dosage? I took some last night, it was a 3 mg dose. I fell asleep quickly and actually felt rested when I woke up this morning, BUT when I woke up in the middle of the night to pee (as per usual) I thought...

When I get the intestinal pains I take long hot baths and lay with my heating pad on my belly/side/back or wherever I hurt. That usually helps me enough that I can fall asleep. However, I've noticed that when I lay down I tend to experience a lot of nausea and reflux which is a fairly new thing with me. Anyone else have this problem?

ARCHIVED What's The Verdit On Maltodextrin?
GlutenFreeAl posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just wondering what maltodextrin is, where it comes from and whether or not it's safe to eat!? I've heard conflicting reports, so I'm nervous about it. I was making tacos for dinner tonight and the taco seasoning mix had maltodextrin in it, so I just threw some chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt and pepper on my ground turkey instead. It came out yummy... -
ARCHIVED Bath And Body Works
GlutenFreeAl replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Bath and Body works clearly labels oats in the ingredients, and they are not in every product. I've found that most if not all of the regular lotions contain oats, but the thicker body creams seem to be ok. Can anyone back that up? -
ARCHIVED Rice Crispy Treats
GlutenFreeAl replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I just bought some Envirokids Koala Krisp last night and I was thining that would make yummy chocolatey "rice crispy" treats. I don't think Envirokids cereals are unreasonably priced, either. Are all marshmallows gluten free? Thanks! -
Has anyone tried Depo shots? Or an IUD? I was put on the pill at 17 because of some period probs. (almost 8 years! yikes!) I really want to switch to a method that completely bypasses my digestive system because I'm worried about absorption and because I'm worried that the pill is actually bothering my stomach. I tried Nuvaring and didn't really like...

Amy's soups are quick and easy and taste almost as good as homemade. And many say gluten free right on the back! When I make things myself like pasta or soup or stir fry, I always make extra to get 2 or 3 meals out of it. It's tough being a college student and not having time to cook, but most convenience foods are pretty bad for you! Good...

ARCHIVED Substituting Milks
GlutenFreeAl replied to IronedOut's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You can make equal substitutions no problem. Obviously, though, don't use vanilla flavored milk in something not meant to be sweet! -
ARCHIVED Could I Be Anymore Pathetic
GlutenFreeAl replied to Firegirl43's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nah, I think it would be stranger if you didn't mourn. You learn pretty quickly, however, that consuming gluten makes you want to die so it's just not worth it. It is tough explaining things at work functions, however. We had a luncheon at work right before Christmas and the only thing that was safe for me to eat was some steamed broccoli... -
ARCHIVED Have You Tried Barbaras Puffins-honey And Rice?

ARCHIVED We've Been Invited For Supper!?!
GlutenFreeAl replied to amymh's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
My advice is that if you don't know exactly what's on the menu, eat something before you go. That way you won't be starving and surrounded by food that you can't eat! Depending on the situation, bringing a dish is a good idea too. Work situations are tough because you can't usually ask for the menu ahead of time and it's tough to explain your situation... -
I've been binging quite a bit lately. I go in cycles. I feel crappy, don't eat much for a few days, feel better, then eat EVERYTHING in sight. Unfortunately, eating so much makes me want to puke. When will I learn?

ARCHIVED Girl Scout Cookies

I literally have to hide them, or I will eat the whole box at one sitting! Is it just me, or do they taste kind of mapley to you? No maple in the ingredients, but they sure taste like it to me!!
