ARCHIVED How Was Your Halloween?
Cheri A replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The kids had a great time. Carleigh was a princess. Nick was a Transformer that actually transformed into a car. I was at the school for the parties, and then we went to a Halloween party. Nick won "Most Original" for his age group and even made it into the newspaper with pictures and a small article. Then they went trick-or-treating for a little... -
ARCHIVED Need Non-food Ideas For A Birthday With The School Class
Cheri A replied to cruelshoes's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I love the ice cream party idea! I may have to do that for my dd's birthday in January. I'm thinking maybe root beer floats, though. I wanted to do really cool non-food treats for my dd's birthday the last two years and she just flipped out. She wanted to be like everyone else, and everyone else brings food. There are other kids with allergies in... -
ARCHIVED Toddler With Celiac And Food Allergies
Cheri A replied to mom with gf toddler's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Mamma, Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of favorite "products" because of the rice being such a substitute for gluten-free. My short list includes Glutino pretzels (cornstarch), Cerrone Cones (tapioca), and occasionally K-Toos (they do have some rice flour but she is okay with them once in awhile). I make everything else from scratch. I substitute... -
ARCHIVED This Almost Made Me Cry!
Cheri A replied to mama2two's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
((hugs)) BTDT. You didn't say how old your daughter was. I just sent my dd off to a Halloween party with a friend. She had to bring a package of store-bought cookies to the party. I bought Oreos for her to contribute. I sent her K-Too cookies and pretzels to eat for herself. Most of the time, she is okay with always being different. However, there... -
ARCHIVED Pumkin Cookies?
Cheri A replied to TinkerbellSwt's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
These cookies are awesome!! I made them this morning for my daughter and she loved them. I'm putting the rest in the frig to try them cold. -
ARCHIVED Am I Just Being A Baby?
Cheri A replied to sickchick's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You may need to take a break from anything bread, cake, or cookie-related until you can *forget* what wheat tastes like. That was the best advice I got from someone who used to post here l a lot. My daughter ate only meat, veggies, and fruit for awhile. -
ARCHIVED Toddler With Celiac And Food Allergies
Cheri A replied to mom with gf toddler's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We deal with multiple food allergies here too, including rice. It is tough eliminating so many things, but my daughter is feeling so much better now, and is at an appropriate weight. Two years ago, we received addition of the wheat and rice allergies, the celiac testing was inconclusive. But, we decided to go gluten free. I was okay with the dairy, egg... -

ARCHIVED School Carnival Nightmare
Cheri A replied to zarfkitty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That's ridiculous! I hope that it rained, and the flour has all been washed away. I agree that you should use this as a teachable moment to inform them - I'm sure that the organizers just have no idea that wheat is a top-8 allergen. -
ARCHIVED A Warning For All Celiacs Going Off To College (and Their Parents)
Cheri A replied to ajgilboy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm so disheartened to read of both of your experiences. I hope that by the time my eight year old daughter goes to college, things will have changed. For now, I guess I'll keep making double copies of the recipes that she likes. I have thought that one day she will need "her" own cookbook to accomodate all of her allergies. -
ARCHIVED Just Wondering Who's From Minnesota
Cheri A replied to linds's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
We took Carleigh to the allergist in LaCrosse on Friday, and we ate pizza at Valentino's in Rochester. She loved it. Thanks, Skypie! I'm hoping that the next visit we can try Victoria's again. -
ARCHIVED Public School Lunch And Celiac
Cheri A replied to LuvMySon's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My dd has a lot of allergies, like Julie's dd. We also do not have access to a microwave. Lunch time is about 20 minutes. We use a thermos about 3 times/week. It works great - except for chicken nuggets. We have also sent cold items in there, like smoothies. To me, it's easier to pack what I know works than fight for her 'right' to eat a school lunch... -

ARCHIVED Prayer Request
Cheri A replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Wow! I take it that this is not a public school that your son goes to. I've said another prayer for Noah, his family, the doctors and nurses taking care of him. Also said a prayer for all of his friends too. -

ARCHIVED Excited About Helping A Child
Cheri A replied to lonewolf's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
That's wonderful!! I'm so glad that his mother was willing to try it!! It gives me hope for my acquaintances that have children with autism. Maybe I shoud make them some gluten-free food/snack baskets and give it to them to try. When I've talked to them about it, they have both responded that it would be too much work for them. -
Wow, that's so nice of them I'm so glad that your BIL will be going to your house to finish recovering. I'm sure he'll do so much better. (hugs)

ARCHIVED Just Wondering Who's From Minnesota
Cheri A replied to linds's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I wish I could go this Saturday. Carleigh has cheerleading and a birthday party to go to. For those of you that attend, please report back all about it, okay? AFA bread, Carleigh did not like the store-bought bread. She likes the sorghum bread that I found at www.twinvalleymills.com We have to modify it some, but have it down to a science now. It... -

ARCHIVED Ugh The School Just Ticked Me Off!
Cheri A replied to Nikki'smom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I understand the frustration that you are feeling and it seems like your school/district should have more policies in place to accomodate you. My dd has multiple food allergies (see my siggy). There is only one lunch (hot dog day) that it is feasible for her to eat. And, even then, everything else has to be modified. While I suppose that I *could... -
