Endoscopy Tomorrow
trents replied to KittenPA's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome aboard! -
Not having neither of the genes that so far have been identified with celiac disease may fall short of a guarantee that your sons will not develop celiac disease. It looks like researchers are on the verge of identifying other genes that might be involved. And then there is always the possibility of NCGS which is 10-12x more common than celiac disease. Some...

You asked, "If my sons test negative now does the risk of them developing coeliac reduce or increase as they get older?" I would say the risk would increase with time, based on the fact that the risk of most health problems, including autoimmune diseases like celiac, increases with age. You asked, "Is it the poor diagnosis that leads many people to get...

How old are your sons? There are some tests that are indicated for children that might not be as necessary for adults. You might also consider ordering a home celiac test kit from a company like Imaware. The cost is about 100 USD. Your story of misdiagnosis going on for years echoes with many of us on this forum. It is typical, actually. I developed...

What do these labs mean?
trents replied to Woman1978's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Don't quit eating gluten if you are planning on an endoscopy/biopsy. 2 slices of wheat bread daily or the equivalent. -

Your next diagnostic step would seem to be an endoscopy with biopsy. -
What do these labs mean?
trents replied to Woman1978's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, Woman1978. The short answer is, it means you could or probably have celiac disease. The tTG-IGA is the most commonly ordered lab to detect celiac disease. It combines good specificity with good sensitivity. But for whatever reason, some people's immune system reacts atypically so as to not trigger a positive for this one. ... -
Welcome to the forum, Lou! Yes, sometimes it does happen that bloods are negative while biopsies are positive and vice versa. But can you be more specific about which serum antibody tests were run and what their values were (along with reference ranges for positive-negative)? Many physicians will order only the tTG-IGA test instead of a "full celiac...

Question about test results

I hear you. I think we all hate grey areas. Unfortunately, life is full of them. -
Question about test results
trents replied to driftwood7's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Why do you need an official diagnosis? You have acted reasonably and responsibly in trying to arrive at a definitive diagnosis but a combination of circumstances which include your own decisions, bad timing and medical provider incompetence have thwarted your efforts. Now it's time to take things into your own hands and proceed with your own experiment of... -
Question about test results
trents replied to driftwood7's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The GI doc will just summarize the results you have in front of you. So, I think your most reasonable course of action is to throw yourself into developing a gluten free lifestyle for several months and see if your symptoms improve. -
Negative tests but ....?
trents replied to JamesUK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello, James and welcome to the forum! You ask, "But is it possible that despite this that you can go on to develop Celiac?" Indeed it is. It is also possible you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) for which there are no tests since it does not damage the villi of the small bowel. Celiac Disease must first be ruled out. They share many of... -
Question about test results
trents replied to driftwood7's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Villi damage can sometimes be seen in the scoping if the damage is severe enough and the scope used is high resolution. But to rely totally on the GI doc's naked eye observation is unreliable IMO. And the fact that he only takes two samples is concerning. It is also possible you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) rather than celiac disease. They share... -
Your stools should be firming up by now if you have been eating gluten free, unless the cause is some other medical condition or another food intolerance not gluten-related. Don't worry about "TMI". In this forum context, it is just necessary to talk straightforwardly about those things. If the pain under the ribs can be on either side then it's not gallbladder...

I know your main issue is constipation but be aware that magnesium supplements can have a laxative effect (think, "milk of magnesia"). The choice of a well-assimilated magnesium form can help prevent that but just be careful to find the dosage that helps your issue but doesn't create the opposite problem. You may have to titrate up from an initial partial...

Newly diagnosed
trents replied to Bill1991's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The "other" food intolerances/sensitivities do not normally go away. Once the immune system triggers are switched on they are they on. The one exception to that would be lactose intolerance which has a different mechanism. And since you are a vegetarian that doesn't apply anyway. You may also find that with some food sensitivities you may be able to eat limited... -
Question about celiac testing
trents replied to mspat3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiac disease antibody home test kits are available online. Imaware is one company that offers them. About $100 I think. If your insurance won't cover another doctor-ordered test so soon you might look into it. -
You can search in Amazon specifically for gluten free supplements. Magnesium comes in different formulations. You want to get a form that is well-assimilated. Two good options are magnesium citrate and magnesium glycinate.

Question about celiac testing
trents replied to mspat3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You said, "Right now, I'm still eating gluten until I speak with my allergist on the 31st about the test results." If you are suspecting celiac disease and being tested for it, please realize it is not an allergy. It is an autoimmune condition. Allergy testing cannot be used to detect it. It engages and entirely different pathway of the immune system... -
Newly diagnosed
trents replied to Bill1991's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Bill, have you considered that you may have other food intolerances and allergies in addition to celiac disease? This is common among celiacs. The ear/sinus problem you have and the headaches made me think of that. Having celiac disease means your immune system is dysfunctional and is interpreting things as invaders that are not. That tendency typically expands... -

Is DiGiorno Gluten Free Pizza Really Gluten-Free?
trents commented on Scott Adams's article in Additional Concerns
I would like to see commentary and data on a wider range of products labeled "gluten free" made from washed wheat to get a feel for whether the process theory is faulty in general or if it has something to do with just this particular pizza product.- 43 comments

One Celiac Gene and Positive DGP-IGG
trents replied to FiveApples's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This might be helpful in understanding the several dimensions of eliminating gluten from your life. And I want to say it's not about cutting way down on gluten, it's all about eliminating it altogether. Even small amounts of gluten can keep the fire smoldering: Also be aware that those with gluten sensitivity issues are frequently intolerant to other...
