  1. Sarah's platelet count takes a dive whenever she gets an infection, like strep. We had her on Predinsone for a short while but it gave her gastritis. We quickly discontinued it for fear she might develop a GI bleed. It really had a beneficial effect on her platelet count, however, and seemed to be the beginning of the upward trend. Have you read of any...
  2. How long have you had ITP? My daughter was orginally diagnosed with it when she was 14 but after bone marrow studies the docs changed it to aplastic anemia when she was 16, which is considered to be an autoimmune disease. At one point her platelet count was down to 25,000 when, as you know, the low end of normal is 150,000. It was scary! She is now 20 years...

    ARCHIVED Sence Of Taste?

Jess, Not to alarm you, but one of the things that can cause a loss of smell and taste senses is brain tumors. Also, besides the steriods for the butt rash, are you on any new medications? Have you sought medical attention for this problem? Steve

    ARCHIVED Teeth & Gums

Just make sure the products that you use for the periodontal care don't themselves contain gluten. Some toothpastes do, I know. I use Aquafresh or Sensitive teeth because I read somewhere it is gluten free.
  5. If you know that you are not diabetic, then what do you mean when you say that blood sugar does tend to be an issue for you? Are you hypoglycemic?
  6. Have you looked into chronic fatigue syndrome?
  7. "Celiac", "Celiac sprue", "nontropical sprue" and "sprue" all refer to "gluten sensitive enteropathy". "Tropical sprue" is another disease altogether, unrelated to gluten sensitivity. My impression is that "sprue" is an older term that is being replaced in current usage by the term "Celiac". Steve
  8. Eugene, Before jumping to conclusions, I think you need to get a firm yes or no on a Celiac diagnosis. I have read that irritability is one symptom experienced by some Celiacs and it wouldn't surprise me to find out that depression is more common in those with the disease as in both cases we are talking about mood issues. Let me caution you on something...
  9. Wow! What impresses me is that a general surgeon thought to check for Celiac disease. Did you tip him off or did he think of that himself?

    ARCHIVED Cirrhosis

According to one expert I read, about 20% of Celiac's have elevated liver enzymes, which means their liver is experiencing inflamation. If this is bad enough and goes on for long enough it probably would result in Cirrhosis.
  12. Fiddle-Faddle, The link you gave indicates there is no connection between Alzheimers and Celiac disease. Am I missing something?
  13. Do you feel your depression is related to Celiac disease?
  14. I'm a little confused. You mentioned being gluten sensitive. Have you actually been diagnosed with Celieac disease? What makes you think your gluten sensitivity is linked to your toxcicity disease? Celiac disease is tied to the possession of certain corrupt genes. Are you saying you believe that this toxic exposure you speak of has also caused damage or mutation...
  15. I think you should consider giving your body a chance to heal from a gluten-free diet before you have someone taking out sections of your bowel. Experts say it can take up to two years for the small intestine to completely heal after going gluten-free. With removal of part of your small intestine you are introducing an automatic nutrient absorption handicap...
  16. What is "intussueption"?
  17. What are the numbers on your liver enzymes anyway? I note you have Graves. Could your weight loss be tied to that? That's thyroid, right?
  18. Rachel, I don't want to scare you but fatty liver disease can be a serious thing, if you have it to a significant degree. But you say it isn't bad in your case. What are they looking for in the CT scan? You might want to talk to a gastro doc about a liver biopsy if your are uncomfortable. You don't want your liver enzymes to be elevated for a significant...
  19. I'm certainly no geneticist or biochemist but I think with CF the mucous problem is not just limited to the digetstive track but is found systemically, i.e., in the respiratory track as well so it would seem to be a coincidence.
  20. Hold on now! The length of one's eyelashes is genetically determined, like blue eyes. It woun't be affected by changing your diet.
  21. My guess its like a lot of other foods. It can be good for you in modest quantities but bad when used to excess. We are a nation of concentrators and supersizers. Of course, like many other foods, there are those individuals who have an allergy/intolerance/sensitivity to it who need to avoid it altogther.
  22. Wow! How long have you had the problem? Does this kind of thing run in your family that you know of?
  23. Can you be more specific? What is the nature of your heart disease? Is it plaque build up in the cornonary arteries? Congestive heart failure? Enlarged heart? Some kind of arythmia? Bad valves? I haven't heard of any connection between heart disease and celiac disease but I wonder if the nutrient malaborption which is part of celiac disease could come...
  24. Sure, you can check it in your WP and then paste it, but the issue is convenience.
  25. As far as the amount of memory goes, left click on the "Start" button in the lower left corner and then left click on "Control Panel". Locate the "System" incon in the Control Panel window and left double click on it. Under the "General" tab there is information about the amount of ram installed in your computer. If necessary, you can have more memory installed...
