  1. You mention she has these ulcers in stomach, mouth and lungs. Has anyone checked her for yeast infections? Doctors now know that the vast majority of stomach ulcers are caused by yeast infections (H. Pylori) and mouth sores can be the result of yeast infections as well. Coupled with that, the leaky gut syndrome that is so common with Celiacs provides an entry...
  2. Several years ago, before I was diagnosed with Celiac disease, I mysteriously developed cellulitis on the inside of my left knee and it went part of the way down the calf. I never could find an entry point. There seemed to be no wound or abrasion. My doctor said there had to be one, however. Since then I have read on the internet about a new and potent form...
  3. The key there may be: "The marrow donor was his HLA-identical sister." The marrow recipient was a close relative who may have also carried the celiac genes. It is generally accepted among celiac experts that one trigger for activating latent celiac disease in adults is significant illness or other major stress. I would think lukemia and a bone marrow transplant...
  4. I get the same effect if I take cal/mag at the usual recommended dose. You may want to cut it in half and take a calcium supplement with vitamin D but not magnesium for the other half. Also, are you getting a significant amount of magnesium from some other source that you aren't taking into account such as your multiple vitamin? Some people are just more...
  5. Excellent question! I am in the bone marrow doner registry myself but that was before I was diagnosed as a Celiac. I'm sure, however, if you were called on to donate marrow, they would do another more detailed screening and at that time you could raise the question again. With the amount of attention Celiac disease is now getting in the medical/scientific...
  6. It is well-known that many Celiacs have elevated liver enzymes (think, "hepatitis"); infact, about 20% according to one expert I read. This was the smyptom that led to the Celiac diagnosis in my case. It is not known with certainty what the connection is but most feel it is the incompletely digested food compounds that leak across the damaged mucosa of the...
  7. Then wouldn't "hypoerinsulinemia" be the opposite of diabetes which is the under production of insulin?
  8. I don't know if this is true about cubital tunnel syndrome but I know with carpal tunnel when surgery is called for it is generally very successful. Of course, surgery is always the last option. By the way, it is safe for most people to take double doses of NSAIDS (e.g. Alleve, Advil) for a short period and then back off to the prescribed dose. I occasionally...
  9. Sounds like pinched nerves. Carpul tunnel syndrome, maybe?
  10. Go see an ENT doc. Sores that don't heal can be carcenomas. I had one on my cheek several years ago that would almost heal and then break open again. It was a basil cell carcenoma. Got it cut out. No more problems. Steve
  11. IF your urine is dark, I would entertain the possibility of a UTI. It could also explain your feeling poorly in general. Your symptoms, or some of them, may be coincidental to what went on at the dentist. Steve
  12. Indeed, there certainly may be a connection between kypho-scoliosis and celiac disease. Here's an exerpt from an online article I just found (http://www.shands.org/health/information/article/000233.htm): Signs and tests: Typically, most people with celiac disease will have symptoms of malabsorption such as diarrhea. However, some will have bone disease...
  13. Sarah's platelet count takes a dive whenever she gets an infection, like strep. We had her on Predinsone for a short while but it gave her gastritis. We quickly discontinued it for fear she might develop a GI bleed. It really had a beneficial effect on her platelet count, however, and seemed to be the beginning of the upward trend. Have you read of any...
  14. How long have you had ITP? My daughter was orginally diagnosed with it when she was 14 but after bone marrow studies the docs changed it to aplastic anemia when she was 16, which is considered to be an autoimmune disease. At one point her platelet count was down to 25,000 when, as you know, the low end of normal is 150,000. It was scary! She is now 20 years...

    ARCHIVED Sence Of Taste?

Jess, Not to alarm you, but one of the things that can cause a loss of smell and taste senses is brain tumors. Also, besides the steriods for the butt rash, are you on any new medications? Have you sought medical attention for this problem? Steve

    ARCHIVED Teeth & Gums

Just make sure the products that you use for the periodontal care don't themselves contain gluten. Some toothpastes do, I know. I use Aquafresh or Sensitive teeth because I read somewhere it is gluten free.
  17. If you know that you are not diabetic, then what do you mean when you say that blood sugar does tend to be an issue for you? Are you hypoglycemic?
  18. Have you looked into chronic fatigue syndrome?
  19. "Celiac", "Celiac sprue", "nontropical sprue" and "sprue" all refer to "gluten sensitive enteropathy". "Tropical sprue" is another disease altogether, unrelated to gluten sensitivity. My impression is that "sprue" is an older term that is being replaced in current usage by the term "Celiac". Steve
  20. Eugene, Before jumping to conclusions, I think you need to get a firm yes or no on a Celiac diagnosis. I have read that irritability is one symptom experienced by some Celiacs and it wouldn't surprise me to find out that depression is more common in those with the disease as in both cases we are talking about mood issues. Let me caution you on something...
  21. Wow! What impresses me is that a general surgeon thought to check for Celiac disease. Did you tip him off or did he think of that himself?

    ARCHIVED Soy

La Choy makes soy sauce/teriyakki sauce that is wheatless.

    ARCHIVED Cirrhosis

According to one expert I read, about 20% of Celiac's have elevated liver enzymes, which means their liver is experiencing inflamation. If this is bad enough and goes on for long enough it probably would result in Cirrhosis.
  24. Fiddle-Faddle, The link you gave indicates there is no connection between Alzheimers and Celiac disease. Am I missing something?
  25. Do you feel your depression is related to Celiac disease?
