Need answers help and/or advice
trents replied to SJBowman's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you asked any physician to test her for celiac disease? The first stage of diagnosis is a simple blood draw to check for celiac antibodies. Explain to the doctor that there is a history of celiac disease in the family. She must have been eating regular amounts of gluten containing foods in order for the blood tests for celiac disease to be accurate,... -

I see no reason for you to go back on gluten just to take the test to differentiate whether or not you have celiac disease or sensitivity. At the end of the day they both call for the same treatment, i.e., avoid gluten. I've already addressed the vitamin and mineral question. Vitamin and mineral supplements are not as important if you have sensitivity instead... -

By "IGA" I'm sure total IGA is meant. -

If you don't have celiac disease you could have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease, is 10x more common but for which there is not diagnostic test. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. With both conditions, it is necessary to eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is not an allergy to... -

Her stool texture (before probiotics) and stomach pain, as well as her low iron and red blood cell values (hemoglobin, MCV, MCH, MCHV) could be caused by celiac disease. The positive positive fecal occult blood test could also explain these things as it suggests she has bleeding in the GI track somewhere. The two blood tests for celiac antibodies (EMA, tTG... -

Welcome to the forum, @Maria101! We generally recommend sublingual B12, high potency B-complex, 2-10k IU of D3, magnesium glycinate (about 400mg daily) and zinc. You can take a multivitamin if you wish but they usually aren't concentrated enough to help much at the front end of long term vitamin and mineral depletion correction such as we typically see... -
"The etiology of SMAS is thought to be the loss of the duodenal fat pad, thus changing the angle between the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery. This allows the superior mesenteric artery to rest directly on the small intestine, resulting in obstruction. The most common conditions predisposing patients to SMAS include orthopedic casting with incapacitation...

Welcome to the forum, @beeboschmeebo82! Do you refer to the tTG-IGA test? Was the total IGA level also tested? I total IGA level is low, then the tTG-IGA test can throw a false negative. You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) for which there is no test but it shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease and is 10x more common...

IGA deficiency
trents replied to Jadeashlyn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Good advice from RMJ. There is also the option of putting her on a strict gluten free diet and see if the symptoms improve. It is also common for celiacs to be dairy intolerant, either to the lactose or the casein in dairy. -
Welcome to the forum, @lise71! We can't say much unless you also include the reference ranges for high/low/nomal for these tests. There are no industry standards. Each lab uses their own.

If the wheat in Sri Lanka were different, you would think it would not have triggered gluten reactions during your first trip, unless, that is, they switched to a different kind of wheat since your first trip. Or, it is possible that the wheat used in some localities in Sri Lanka is not the same as in other localities. Concerning lactose intolerance...

Welcome to the forum @Vera W! Both your bloodwork and your biopsy are positive for celiac disease. Of note is that your immunoglobulin A (IgA), what we often call "total IGA" is low. This one is not a celiac antibody test per se but a measure of over all IGA antibody load. If it is low it will drive down the values of the individual IGA antibody tests...

@jack56teal, Why have you concluded you don't have celiac disease? The Deamidated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) Ab, IgA is not a primary celiac disease antibody test. Were any other celiac antibody tests run besides that one? The most important celiac antibody test is the tTG-IGA which has both good specificity and good sensitivity. And why do you bring up the issue...

Only if they have intolerance/sensitivity issues with soy. It is common but not all celiacs do by any means.

Food allergies and intolerances are not necessarily the same thing. The immune system is complex and has various pathways. Consider the fact that celiac disease is an intolerance to the wheat protein gluten but many or most people with celiac disease will test negative for a wheat allergy. While I'm at it, the term "allergy" is terribly abused. We commonly... -

trents replied to Michmap's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome to the forum, @Michmap! If I were you I'd look into other food intolerances in addition to gluten. This is very common in the celiac community. You cut out gluten and see definite improvement but not total. Please check this recent thread out that deals with this: It's a good idea to remember that celiac disease represents an immune system... -

It is very common for celiacs to have developed dairy intolerance and intolerance for oats, soy, eggs and corn are also common. The dairy intolerance often goes away with time and a strict gluten-free diet. The dairy intolerance can be due either to the sugar in milk (lactose) or the primary protein, casein. -
Yes, you would but it's better than getting sick.

Great find, Russ! Thanks. We are always getting questions about this on the forum. -
Big boy - can he still be coeliac?
trents replied to NicJ's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, @NicJ! With regard to the growth curve, it is more common for celiac disease to put children behind. With adults, there is this common misconception that celiac disease will necessarily result in being underweight. While that is more often the case, overweight adult celiacs are certainly not a rarity. And it is for the very reason... -
At this point, yes, they are negative. However, there are caveats as I mentioned. And there is also the possibility that she has NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) for which there is no testing available yet. NCGS and celiac disease share many of the same symptoms and NCGS is 10x more common. Some experts believe NCGS can be a precursor to celiac disease...

coping with celiac Echinacia is Helping During a Major Flare???
trents replied to AlexisC25's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Welcome to the forum, @AlexisC25! Thanks for sharing! I have been participating on this forum for many years and echinacea as a help for gluten flareups is not one I have run across before. But who knows, it might turn out to be helpful to many. We are always open to new ideas and echinacea is a trusted naturopathic remedy that has been around for a... -
Welcome to the forum, @concernedmomx4! This sentence from the printout results you posted may be key here: "Low IgA antibody levels suspected." This is a reference to what we call "total IGA". Total IGA is not an test for celiac disease per se but a measure of the entire immune system IGA load. If total IGA is low, it will suppress individual IGA scores...

There are different chemical formulations of vitamins and some are more bioavailable than others. The common supplements you see on store shelves tend to be less bioavailable because they are compounded to increase shelf life. The more bioavailable forms will be more expensive, however. It pays to do some research on this. https://perniciousanemia...

https://nationalceliac.org/blog/what-is-a-gluten-challenge/ I promise you, an official diagnosis will not have much effect in convincing skeptical relatives that you have a "real disease" that requires you to avoid wheat/gluten. I think you already have the evidence you need by your dramatic improvement when you have eliminated gluten from...
