  1. I gained a lot of weight before going gluten-free. I used to do triathlons and have always been very active. I always count my calories and have been a health nut for most of my adult life. Still, I was gaining weight like crazy - I gained 30 lbs. in 4 months. Fortunately, I lost it all and then some after going gluten-free.
  2. Thank you, Ursula! I agree that a low-fat diet is not healthy - it just seemed better than the alternative of feeling miserable all the time! I'm SO glad that I can tolerate it now, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it continues!
  3. I have what appears to be DH between my middle and ring finger on my right hand. I never saw a blister, but it's cracked, red, and itchy, and nothing I put on it seems to make it go away. This showed up on Tuesday after I got glutened on Sunday and it doesn't look like it's going away. Because of the timing and the fact that I've never had it before, I wonder...
  4. Does anyone have any experience with this? About 2 years ago, I went on the "IBS diet" (because I was wrongly diagnosed as IBS at that time) which cut out most fat and all dairy. I felt a LOT better without eating those things. When I went gluten-free, I hypothesized that it might have been gluten all along and so I tried eating gluten-free dairy and fat...
  5. That sounds really good Tinkerbellswt! Let me know how you enjoy the stew!
  6. This stew is absolutely amazing! I used Oscar Meyer low-fat turkey sausage and I have been looking forward to lunch every day since I made it. It's SOOOO good! Recipe from Cooking Light magazine.
  7. Thanks, JerseyAngel, for your input! I'm glad to hear that your symptoms went away quickly this past time!
  8. Hi everyone, I cheated (I know, I know) on Sunday and I've experienced some of my usual symptoms (back pain and severe fatigue) but not the most prominent ones (bloating and stomach pain). I know for certain that I ate gluten, as well as dairy and fat which usually present problems for me... but I'm not having the major symptoms. It's been several days...
  9. I glutened myself on Sunday. I don't know why I gave in, but I did, and I ate mexican food at my favorite, to-die-for mexican place. The funny thing is that I'm not feeling all of my usual symptoms. I have the back pain and severe fatigue, but not the bloating and I've only had tummy pain for about an hour before bed last night. Guess I should be thanking...
  10. I am so jealous! Look at all the yummy candies you get to eat! Boy do I miss chocolate. It's making me a grumpy halloween-er. Enjoy your yummy candies for me!
  11. That's what I do and I've not gotten sick from it.
  12. Hi Sissy! I know where Tahlequah is, but I've never been there. I wouldn't mind driving to meet you every once in a while - it would be so nice to have someone in OK that understands! I do most of my gluten-free shopping at a little health food store called Dodson's in Norman. It's expensive, but it has a pretty good selection. I've not heard of Reasors...
  13. Sissy, if you don't mind my asking, where in OK do you live? I live in Norman and I would be excited if you wanted to meet up at some point for some gluten-free food shopping! That said, all the others have given wonderful advice and recipes. I plan on using many of them for my thanksgiving dinner!
  14. HI Marlene, I am so sorry for all the things you are going through. I know you have to work full-time - is there any chance you can get a different, more flexible job? You might investigate the options out there. ((hugs))
  15. That's actually really important to do. If you were to transfer crumbs from his gluteny food to the fridge door and then later you touched the fridge door and then ate something, you could transfer gluten from his food to the fridge door to your hands to your food to your mouth. Yes, it's a pain, but there's actually a reason we do it - to avoid cc.
  16. Thanks everyone. I'm guessing that it is part of the healing process and something we have to deal with. I'm thankful that it only lasted 45 minutes and that I feel fine now.
  17. ... from the worst pain I've ever felt since I started having symptoms. I woke up this morning to the most intense "they're-ripping-my-intestines-out-of-my-body" pain that I've ever felt. I've had bad pain like this probably 5 times and 4 out of those 5 were before I went gluten-free. I now know it was my body trying to tell me that I needed to be...
  18. Most general practice doctors don't know this, but the normal range for thyroid is now 0.5-3.0 (down from 0.5-5.0). Many people experience symptoms of hyper or hypo thyroid when they are actually technically within the normal range. That doesn't mean there isn't a reason to treat them. I suggest you go see an endocrinologist - a doc that specializes in the...
  19. Hi there - Just wanted to echo what the other posters said - whole, naturally gluten-free foods are the best for you. They also happen to be the cheapest (most of the time). Good luck!
  20. .... if you've ever bought maternity clothes to hide your enormously bloated belly .... if every day that you wake up to another good day of no glutening symptoms, you want to shout from the rooftops .... if you bring your own food to an extremely formal political dinner
  21. You can use canola oil instead of butter or margarine. I'm not sure if marshmallow cream is dairy free, but I've melted regular marshmallows in the microwave and it worked fine.
  22. I don't have a knowledgable doctor right now, but I'm looking around for one. I'm going to see another thyroid specialist next week, and I'll definitely ask him, too. Thanks for all your help, Lisa! Elizabeth
  23. Thanks Carla and Lisa! I have autoimmune thyroiditis/hypothyroidism, which was diagnosed when I was in high school. I hadn't had my thyroid tested in a while when I tested last fall. The tests came back that my antibody levels were in the 600's (from what I understand, normal is 35 or lower). Do you think this is a cause/effect of the celiac/gluten intolerance...
  24. I've not been formally diagnosed. I had a colonoscopy & endoscopy in July 2005, but the doctor said he didn't find anything. I went gluten-free as a last resort to heal my pain in April '06. My question: Is it possible that there wasn't enough damage done when my doctor did the tests? Does gluten intolerance (because I'm positive I have at least...
  25. For the first year after I started my period for the first time, I would have one episode of diarrhea right before starting my period. It was a great indicator of when my period was coming! I don't now, but I'm chronically constipated, so that probably has something to do with it.
