  1. Make a list of insurance companies which declined you and apply to other companies. Every insurance company has different underwriting criteria/standards....you may need their homeoffice to approve and you may not get Preferred rates but you might find a company which understands celiac (it it's celiac that is getting you declined).
  2. Ok I have a suggestion..but it's kind of silly and gross ....but try it this way.....next time you are cooking something he is going to consume, lead him to believe that you went to the bathroom ( #2) and didn't wash your hands. Most people will be freaked out by that - that's cross contamination in its purest sense.
  3. some chocolates have "barley" as an ingredient...so beware
  4. Yep, I thought I saw the Vann's! Great product placement.
  5. Another source of wheat to watch out for: tuna/chicken/turkey/egg salads purchased from Deli counters or supermarkets or speedy-marts, or restaurants/diners: many add bread crumbs to stretch it out.

    ARCHIVED Dealing With An Hmo

Every HMO has a Dept. which reviews cases after they've declined coverage. You must contact your HMO and find out where you must send your letter asking them to review your case. Use your documentation about how their plan is "berefit" of celiac speicalists, etc. Let them know that not all "gastro" doctors are created equal. Most know nothing...
  7. We went to a Nutritionist and had to get "special permission" from the insurance company because, yes insurance companies only think that diabetes and obesity are the only reasons a person would want to see a dietian or nutritionist. Well it was a waste of everyone's time and money. She knew only a smidgen about Gluten free. I found more help on this...
  8. I agree! I cut them into 3 slices as they are two "fat" as two slices for my toaster andn end up getting burned. Then I have 3 wonderful English Muffins to butter!
  9. 5' 4" @ 117 Lbs. for a female teenager is a good weight. Don't allow uninformed people to get to you. Anexoria (the psychological condition) is from deliberately not eating. They'll get tired of this topic when they realize they aren't "getting to you." I am 5' 4" and when I was a teen I would have been thrilled to be 117 lbs. (I was...
  10. Carrie If you are looking for a banquet type party (where you invite a large number of people) I recommend The Westwood in Garwood, NJ (Union County). The Westwood is a Caterers and I had my 25th anniversary and my 50th Birthday parties there. It's on North Avenue. Garwood is a very tiny town nestled between Westfield and Cranford (Exit 137)...
  11. My husband's sister appears to have celiac and won't be tested and said that she'd rather die than eat gluten free like he does....well she might get her wish. My thyroid when hyper before it "burned" out - I lost all my excess weight and thought WOW! finally a size 8! Then learned I had a "nodule" on thyroid and it gland stopped working and I gained...

GIB Please expand on this as I don't understand who would be the source of the slighting: the insurance companies, the doctors or the state insurance regulators?
  13. I am thinking it's something in your soap - read the ingredients "Aveno" or words which look this this mean "oats". Again, you might not be sensitive to oat, but we know that regular oats are harvested with wheat, etc. and there could be cross contamination getting to you. Or fragrance allergy issues. I know when I use Paul Mitchell ...
  14. My husband's friends dropped him when he first got sick back in 1977 (during his "mis-diagnosed" years).
  15. Do you have to live with her? Sounds like you need your own space.
  16. This is the same experience as my husband (see below my signature). He's a shell of the man he once was (see his photo in my posts). Imagine about 40 pounds thinner and loss of muscle tone. That's what misdiagnosis has done to him. On paper his blood tests are subperb! (except when they did the celiac blood tests in 2004). Whoops! They...
  17. I was thinking in this direction as well: horses/camels/donkeys: we're sunk again..... cost to house, feed, maintain and doctor those animals is probabaly equivalent to the high gas prices.. I can just see the Homeowner and Condo associations now banning them due to the "smell" . People would need barns again and would have to be...
  18. Do not cook a surprise home-cooked meal for your celiac sweetie. Depending on your level of knowledge about gluten free foods, utensils, pots/pans and cross contamination rules your loved one may decline the food (Don't be offended if they do). Cooking for a celiac in the beginning is tricky, so ask your sweetie first before you surprise them with...
  19. Ingredients are sold by weight, not by "cup" measurements because when they are first packaged, they hit the top of the container but as they get moved around from factory or packaging house to distributor to grocery store and to home the dry product gets packed down which gives the appearance of less product. You want to purchase dry goods in weight measurement...
  20. Michael - spent about $7000 medical bills in a 30-year span; this does not include the free medical attention he received from the Veteran's Hospital (couldn't be much because they refused to give him medical testing - so if I had to put a price on it it ran about $600 in 1977 - some of these costs are before healthcare costs skyrocketed so they may...
  21. This is a very basic, fragrance free shampoo that we buy from drugstoredot com as I cannot find this in a regular drug store or supermarket: Brand: DHS Clear Shampoo made by Person & Covey, Glendale CA It has no colors nor fragrances and apparently no gluten Keep in mind that an "unscented" product is different from "fragrance free...
  22. My husband was "classic textbook" celiac and he was misdiagnosed by a good number of internists and gastro doctors both in the Veteran's Hospital System, and private doctors including a very large medical group here in NJ who will remain nameless who pride themselves on being the best (their practice is even in a "hoity-toity" area of our state...
  23. My brother had this happen when he was about 5 years old (on a "down" escalator) and he was wearing Converse High Top Sneakers (1966 about). The store had to stop the escalator. His toes were, thankfully, curled up away from the tip of the shoe - otherwise he would have lost his toes. The sneaker was actually gnarled up between the moving stair and...
