  1. My bread machine, Breadman, instructions tell me to put liquid in bucket first, then flour mix on top then make a well in the flour and pour the packet of yeast into that well. here's my question: If I am making the bread immediately, is it ok to pour the yeast into the flour first, instead of making the well ? Logically this makes sense to me, but...
  2. I dislike the taste of extra virgin olive oil......so wouldn't that be a clue as to whether or not you're getting the purer olive oil, by the stronger taste?
  3. Gluten Free Girlfriend: I am in the same boat right now and I'll send you a personal message rather than on the board as I am uncomfortable with a broad communication on this topic. Suffice it to say that my husband has been diagnosed with celiac disease for only 2.5 years so far; we've been married 27 years; he was very ill when I married him and...

    ARCHIVED Had My Appt Today..

Sounds like he is aggresive in his approach...which could be a good thing....considering my husband's experiences were with non aggressive doctors who did nothing but take our money...
  5. That comment is my own opinion and observation. I see many Employment Ads in paper for lower income positions which ask for person to be fluent in Spanish....this requirement excludes a lot of American cititzens who do not have that second language - for example, languages weren't pushed during their time in school, or they went to a low income school...
  6. I took French and in retrospect should have taken Spanish due to how employers in our country are now demanding Spanish as a second language (which should be an illegal requirement, unless you are an interpreter). Anyway, the days of German and Latin being needed for the medical field are pretty much over. I am sure it won't hurt to know those languages...
  7. It's been sometime since I looked into yogurts - but I believe the mod food starch has to be identified as to whether it's corn or wheat; the usual suspect is corn when in US. The manufacturer has to be contacted or do research on their website; but then you'll probably run into their CYA statement "that they cannot guarantee that their suppliers used...
  8. They are a good Italian restaurant (exit 135 on Parkway), located on Raritan Road across from a Barnes & Noble bookstore... They serve classical Italian food. The gluten-free portion of menu appears to be in appetizers and about 7 main dishes using chicken and eggplant (no pasta) - Where in Newark are you everyday? Downtown area? Clark...
  9. Visited there last week, and noticed that they have a short gluten-free menu and appear to have some knowlege of gluten-free diet requirements.
  10. gluten-free Doc did post some adjustments to the receipe around the same time she posted the first receipe something about 6 tablespoons shortening and 5 tablespoons of butter.....is correct, if this makes sense (I lost orig receipe but kept the part showing the corrections....)
  11. I think I was checking out lymphadema on Mayoclinic.com's site. & they mentioned causes of it could be tumor.
  12. Do you have "summer reading" to do too? I used to resent that (I was Honors English and it was mandatory). Now in retrospect, I never would have found the time now to read all those good books as a Full time working adult. So I am glad I got to read them.
  13. Put my husband on list for pre-celiac disease depression that lifted considerably after going 100% gluten free. Now the depression is only situational and not as intense as before.
  14. I used the cauliflower story to show the "passive/aggressive" ploy that can be used. Of course I've eaten the cauliflower in the beginning before I mentioned that I disliked this vegetable and she over the course of 20 years continued to make it acting surprised everytime I didn't put it on my plate. After the first several times of eating it, during...
  15. I didn't want to comment to you first post as I was hoping you and your friend would be Ok ...but after reading her response I felt for you. My husband and I have experienced this, unfortunately and we feel we are better off without those shallow, self centered people. That being said, next time you talk to her, tell her for me to "get over herself...
  16. A while ago, one of the members, GFdoc posted one...I lost it. Maybe if she sees this she'll be happy to repost?
  17. Judy good to hear that this Dr. listened. Keep doing the regimen (legs up, new stocking/wrap, pump) and it's gotta work. My husband Mike is experiencing the lymphadema on and off these days so I am taking your experience all in. I just recently learned about the tumor/lymphadema connection and I guess we have to explore that too....what test is for...
  18. People do seem miffed if you are chosing to remedy your celiac disease with diet instead of stuffing pills in your body. And I agree that to the uninitiated it is bizzaro that wheat would be a substance of illness. I too thought a wheat allergy/intolerance was bizzaro before my husband was diagnosed; but I didn't try to get people to go off their special...
  19. From what i've heard, if you are friendly with a small deli and they are agreeable to clean their slicer thoroughly before they slice your selections, and I mean clean it with a clean "rag" then there shouldn't be a cross contam problem. Sometimes when you're the first customer of the day and they have cleaned their slicer with a clean sponge/rag you'll...
  20. Please note that if you are going to eat deli meats sliced in deli or supermarket, double check that the slicer is cleaned first, otherwise it could cross contaminate your order.
  21. I like the Moonie idea. But I won't shave my head! Instead of flowers, we give out rice cakes.
  22. I'd be just as concerned about the silent damage the small amounts of gluten are doing. The neurological and or other immunicological damage that can occur that can't be reversed with eliminating the gluten alone. It's too much of a risk to eat foodstuffs that cannot be considered gluten-free even if obvious physical symptoms aren't apparent.
  23. Lisa Sorry your family plays games with you (let you believe what they make is gluten-free when it is not). You can't buy a new family. I understand that sometimes it's difficult to take foodstuffs along with you especially when you have to be in a church and depend on others to drive you places, etc. They'd probably make fun of you when you carry...
  24. Judy Read your posts...I wish I could add something to help but I don't know anything more about celluitiis than it's painful and you have to elevate and wear some type of leg support stocking. Just wish the leg was better and this episode was behind you. D.
