ARCHIVED Doctor Wants Universal Celiac Testing
debmidge replied to Claire's topic in Publications & Publicity
they must be avoiding doing it because it makes too much gosh darn sense! Imagine, the medical community being Pro Active....wow it would blow their image of being inept, self important, arrogant windbags. Then they couldn't pontificate on how your symptoms are all in your head or why you have IBS or it's just stress in your life. -
As a not celiac I have eaten in Subway and I can't imagine how they could handle gluten-free -- they bake their own breads there, but even if you brought your own gluten-free bread there these obstacles would have to be mounted: 1) They work "assembly" line method, there's constant bread crumbs on their counters as the bread gets passed to next person...

ARCHIVED How Good Is The Food?
debmidge replied to Mongoose's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My concern over the gluten-free flours is that, with the exception of the bean flours, they are low in fiber. Even the small amount of brown rice flour doesn't compare with the grams of fiber one would get when you used to eat whole wheat bread. when making home made gluten-free bread, I add extra rice bran to give more fiber and a lot of the pre-made... -
He has osteoarthiritis....and no he thinks I am nuts to suggest he get a scan for osteoporosis. He's hard headed & obstinate man. He never did any of the work (carpet fitter, plumber, etc.) so I'm going with the other suggestions

Well the knees swelled up again, so it appears that the draining did not help. Next step is the removal then. This is still baffling me...

It's been 2 mos already and the swelling is still pronounced. Dr. said that only way to fix permanently is remove the bursas. So husband had Dr. drain them for now. Anyone see a connection between this and celiac? Considering that my husband isn't working I can't see how (he does a little light housework for us) he got this in the first place....

My husband now has bursitis in both knees (he doesn't do physical labor) and needs to have them drained. The primary care Dr. mentioned that with celiac, immune disorder, it could be an additional wacky immune response. any thoughts on this? We go to othropaedic Dr. today.

ARCHIVED I Hate This Disease
debmidge replied to tiredofdoctors's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lynne, you have every right to feel this way. This disease has stolen from you and you've spent time, emotion and money trying to gain some of your health back to no avail. But I have extreme respect for you and the grace you have in dealing with this. As you will probably remember, celiac has caused my husband to be unable to work, for many years... -
ARCHIVED Restless Legs Syndrom (rls)

My hubby has had RLS for years and the anti depressants intensify them, so he can't take anti depressants due to this. He takes something occasionnally for the RLS at night (Requipp). -
ARCHIVED I'm Starting A Support Group/help Group
debmidge replied to BamBam's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Bam Once you establish your group, you might want to line up with the Celiac Sprue Assn and become a group under their umbrella. I understand that sometimes hospitals will allow these groups to use their meeting rooms free of charge and if you are a group of the CSA you get free materials and brochures, etc. You can reach them at 877-CSA-4-CSA toll... -
ARCHIVED Why Celiac's Are Special, Heavenly Creatures
debmidge replied to fairydust's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome fairy dust Celia. Your post did cheer me up. We are glad to have you aboard and look forward to your contributions, opinions, venting and more cheering up. I do see a connection between celiac and caelis - pehaps etymologically they are connected. Here's how perhaps: The heavens, celestial heavens could be referred to as a "hole... -
Prior to his celiac diagnosis in 2003 my husband was suicidally depressed. How much of this depression was due to feeling that getting his health back was hopeless and his situation being hopeless vs. the depression that naturally comes chemically with celiac, I do not know. All I do know is that when he went gluten free, from that point on, the depression...

It isn't easy to make such a drastic diet change at this time in his life. My husband went 26 years misdiagnosed so I can relate to the longer haul he'll have to regain some health. Has he been responding to the gluten-free diet? Wishing him a rapid healing process. Always feel free to ask questions on this board. We'll help you navigate through...
