  1. Dessa: I believe we are the generation that technology skipped over. When this PC stuff first came out I was emersed in my career and didn't have time to study something above and beyond my career subject. When we were in school there was no such thing as PC's. The seniors have picked it up from their grandchildren (remember, I am childless and my nieces...
  2. Dan Supposedly it's same rate as UK 1 in 133 people have it either knowingly or unknowingly. But Drs. in USA are ignorant of celiac disease even existing and you can go for years from Dr. to Dr. not getting correct diagnosis. They say usual amount of time wasted is 11 years - for my husband that was 27 years. There's a hard headedness abounding...
  3. Dear Friends I want to install Gluten Guard but it requires 1) Drive Space of 85 mb of free space 2) memory 256 mb How do I know if my computer has enough of this space? Where do I check? I am computer illiterate and desperately need to find this out before I purchase the program. I have no one to ask as my family is worse than I am...
  4. RE: ADA someone might know the answer to this: let's say a 63 yr old person comes down with undiagnosed Alzheimers -- it's early yet in the symptoms; and person cannot cogitate enough properly to do their job and gets fired for incompetence, with the perception of the boss that the person is just lazy when in fact the person is losing memory and...
  5. good question about occupations celiacs couldn't take. pizza maker? beer maker? don't they have to taste test it? now I got to thinking about beautician because of the shampoos and conditioners that they put on their clients could have gluten in them....there has to be traces of the shampoos and conditioner on the hair and they touch the hair while...
  6. Yes, I recommend the "Whole Foods" (that's their name) stores...there are many -this is a type of supermarket for specialty foods which are all natural. They have website which will have all their locations in each state. I believe there are a few in NYC itself. Will you be staying in Manhattan (NYC)? As to Pennsylvania..I am not certain. ...
  7. Nisla, sorry your work situation is souring, it's not a good scene to be in. I don't know anything about your area of work so I can even suggest something that you can jump into with your background. What about at a physical therapy center? I'm sure you've thought of this too.... D.

    ARCHIVED Quote Of The Day

said to my celiac husband prior to correct diagnosis, said by a gastro specialist in 1977 - pre HMO days too! "You just have run of the mill IBS" Meanwhile, he just lost 30 lbs with D everyday and gas and had anexoric look - this had been going on for 4-5 months; people in the hospital looked better than he did.
  9. As to specialty teas, I have to say (my husband is celiac, I am not) for me these teas give me a severe stomach ache when I drink them (Celestial Seasonings brand too) as I have allergies to herbs and grasses. Since these teas are natural - from things that grow - when I drink these teas I am getting an internal allergy reaction. So while the teas could...
  10. Question about pans Ok, I understand about Teflon coated stuff - must go in garbage if it's been used with gluteny stuff; but what about the Silverstone? I clean it with a "scrubby" pad which doesn't scratch the Silverstone, but it appears to be cleaning the surface well..... I use the Silverstone for my occasional gluten food; my husband's food never...
  11. My celiac hubby says he too dreams of eating the "forbidden" foods and being confused in dream or panicked because he then realizes in dream he shouldn't be eating it. When I diet strenously, I dream of 'naughty' foods that aren't on my diet but I never get to eat the thing in my dream, I either have to drive somewhere else or go to do something else....
  12. also don't store them in refrigerator, even if they are covered from the light. we good through them like crazy...hubby is expert potato picker outer! He gets annoyed when supermarket's stock is old or looks like they were mishandled.
  13. If you go to the Discovery Health Channel website, offshoot of Discovery Channel, they offer you a chance to find out when a show will re aired; and enter in the title of it and they'll email you when it's on next time. D.
  14. Shirley, condolences on losing your good friend. D.
  15. Lynne, You are a constant friend to all of us. Your encouragement to each one of us on an individual level in spite of the pain and discomfort and heavy-heartedness you carry is remarkable. You have an absolute fan club in all of us. I wish I lived near you to stop by and share a cup of coffee/tea with you. You have been blessed with the gift...
  16. Hope she surfaces...I too recall people from those days and wonder where they ended up.
  17. Ok, for balance here's list I love: #1 without competition: my husband of 26 years and my sweetheart of 33 years! The man I've been with thru thick and thin. Any thinner, and he'd be invisible. at this point these are not in any particular order of importance... ..cooking gluten-free for my husband and watching him enjoy the little foods he...
  18. Lynne The final thing we can lose is our hope. So my special wish/prayer for you is that you don't lose hope. We've been through so much false hope in our lives, so I will be careful not to wish that - just real hope. D.
  19. Thanks guys. It's my frustration du jour. I have to keep thinking "I can mourn because rose bushes have thorns, or I could rejoice that thorn bushes have roses." I try to keep it down to a quiet rumble, but sometimes I get overly bothered. But I will do the same number of things under "I Love." 33 love things. P.S. what's SXSW mean? ...
  20. Applegate Farms was originally only in Upper Montclair, NJ. I used to go there are a child in the 1960's. I do however, worry about the ice cream scoopers & cross contamination. Is their soft serve ice cream gluten-free?
  21. My husband has celiac for many years, but just diagnosed correctly in 2003. Both of his knees are recently swollen....podiatrist said it appears to be bursitis of knee. They hurt him a lot.
  22. I promised myself that for every "I HATE" I'll enter the same amount of "I LOVE" in the other thread. Need balance. I hate... #1...watching my husband get sick (with celiac disease and other health problems) and not being able to fix it. ..as others mentioned going to several stores to buy gluten-free and/or other gluten-free diet compatible...
  23. Yesterday's Star Ledger paper, column by Dr. Donohue (a regular Dr. column) mentioned a 13 yr old boy who died of celiac recently.
  24. buying in bulk is a problem for me as I have nowhere to put it. I have started stashing stuff in my livingroom and bedroom. My friends come over and joke with us and ask "what's the name of your store?"
  25. what is their website address?
