  1. Thanks Lynne.
  2. Hi To avoid giving you advice that you've already used on your boyfriend, please let us know what you are saying to explain to him why supplements are necessary. It would be easy to say to you to tell him that all newly diagnosed celiacs need supplements and probably will need them "as needed" in their lives. Depending on how long you've been celiac without...
  3. Years ago when I was doing Atkins, he mentions in his books that the diabetic "sweet breath" could happen when you ( a non diabetic) limit your carbs because when you limit your carbs you are in effect altering your blood sugar artifically and that kind of "sweet breath" is an indication of ketosis - he calls it Benign Dietary Ketosis; now I don't know if...
  4. Around Christmas a couple of years ago I had an order of Ener-G (gluten-free) stuff delivered to my office, which I rarely do. I work on first floor and specifically told order taker at Ener-g to show my address with " 1st Floor" written on it. The box did show 1st Floor, but the delivery guy was just used to bringing stuff up to the second floor, he...
  5. Just would like to comment here - a couple of things 1) You're not crazy. My husband got it's an "all in your head" diagnosis several years ago from one of NJ's top groups of doctors. 2) He cannot tolerate anti-depressants as they make his body shake all over, uncontrollably. They stimulate his serotonin or neurotonin chemicals too much and...
  6. can concur that there can be up and down bouts of depression even after diagnosis. Especially since you have other health issues. The depression can be intense and then lighten up. Situations can contribute to it and sometimes when several issues gang up on you, you feel broken. So it's not unusual. But you're in good company and those who have...
  7. Last summer while driving & listening to a doctor, who has a talk program on 710 WOR radio (Dr. Dean somebody) was speaking to a caller and tellling him that his teenager who had skin problems should probably eliminate wheat from diet as wheat sometimes aggravates acne.
  8. For us 2.5 yrs ago it cost $160 for nutritionist to tell us what we already found out by medical textbooks and internet sources. Claims her family has celiac in it and knows about it & everything. We weren't impressed. Fortunately we got insurer to reverse their decision and pay for it. So we ended up paying $25 co pay. It wasn't even worth...
  9. Until Celiac disease is "outed" these are the kinds of comments that celiacs will continue to hear, unfortunately. People have no brains on regular subjects, they have less when it comes to medical & health conditions they can't see (like would they ridicule someone in a wheelchair? No, because it's visual). About 8 years ago while my husband...
  10. Do you really need a "heavy duty" mixer to make this? I can't afford one and have no where to store it when it's not being used. Would a medium duty (Sunbeam) mixer do the job?
  11. Lori - I can relate to your experience. my celiac husband has multiple food restrictions (Celiac, no seeds, no fruits, no vegetables, no spices, low roughage but not low enough to make him constipated like cheese would, no acidy foods, no soy, tries to avoid milk & egg yolk, and should avoid yeast but can't.) That being said, you live with it everyday...
  12. She'll probably win the lawsuit because food outlets and manufacturers have strict liability on their products. This means that the Plaintiff needs less proof than a regular lawsuit would need to prove their case. Food is a tricky issue in court. Additionally, they'll probably just give her money to get rid of the case. So one way or another she'll...
  13. Most of these comments were made during those years he was misdiagnosed - doctors could not find what was wrong and eventualy the consensus was that he was "making it up" to get out of working. But only I could see him every morning waking up looking ashen faced and stomach bothering him; no energy and weight below 140 (his natural weight should have been...
  14. Goodness I've had my share of rude comments hurled at me. When explaining the constraints of eating out, people (like family & co workers) would say "Well, what can he eat?" Then there's the comment "He's lucky to have you for a wife. Most women wouldn't have stayed in a marriage where the husband was sickly." I've had people think they are...
  15. That rude woman is obviously lumping Celiac in with all the fad type diets. However, I don't consider Atkins a fad diet, as many overeat carbs, but that's for a different post. She just sounds like she has diarrhea of the mouth.
  16. Feel free to rant This thread is the thread to rant on. I believe this is the only thread you can say this stuff on. Some of us are more emotional about our negative treatment, misdiagnoses, etc. Some of us have been impacted more negatively than others in this negative treatment and misdiagnoses and general ineptness of the medicine and doctors. ...
  17. Many who know me from my posts know that my husband has celiac (only 2.5 years now) but has been very ill for many years. BEFORE his diagnosis, I have to confess that in the past I too thought that a gluten free diet was a trend like low carb or low sugar, etc. and there sometimes were people who latched onto every "fad" health problem and went on...
  18. The people at MC Donalds who make the decisions aren't nutritionists so they aren't aware of wheat being a problem for celiacs or those with wheat allergies. They probably know that peanut/nut allergy is the kind that brings on sudden death and that's probably all they know. They are only going by the information that they know about. I don't think...
  19. I was under impression that Burger King also used wheat-coated fries (started a couple of years ago). I believe the wheat coating made fries crispier (as the fries usually sit out sometimes until someone buys them). Just something I remember hearing...we wouldn't want BK to end up like McDonald's (secretly adding wheat to fries). I don't think the management...
  20. Does In/Out have a website? Do they have a reliable gluten-free menu?
  21. You are walking a tightrope with this situation. My husband is celiac and I am not. We've been married 26 years and only 2.5 of them have been gluten-free for him. On the surface, based on what you said he's upset over pizza which is his favorite. Since you and your kids are able to eat it, and kids really don't understand gluten-free issues...
  22. Rachel: Best Wishes for a speedy resolution and getting good health! Debbie
  23. It's situations like Mcdonald's which prove that the restaurant/ food industry still doesn't "get it" when it comes to a gluten free diet. People who are ignorant of food allergies and intolerances are making the marketing decisions of these companies. Intolerances and allergies are not being taken seriously and management just shrugs it off thinking...
  24. The news report I heard this morning stated that McD's was labeling their fries as gluten-free when they are in fact not. (WABC AM News program NYC). And now they admit the are not gluten-free.
  25. I have always found gluten-free Mall to be reliable. Perhaps their delay was due to beginning of year inventory and now that's done you're getting your books?
