  1. I run a gluten-free and Gluten kitchen and found that marking the new wooden spoons with a dab of red nail polish at handle end helps keep them separated. New toaster is important : I have a gluten-free and regular toaster. Color coded spatulas help too. White is for gluten, colors are gluten-free. My problem isn't the cost of the items, but...
  2. How many of you high schoolers with celiac attend and do you arrange for gluten-free meal? Or do you just skip eating there? How do you guys handle this? D.
  3. The Crabtree company's response bothers me too. Why would my doctor know more about their product than they do? My doctor doesn't manufacture the product: THEY DO! That infuriates me. It doesn't come across to me as CYA, but more "I'm so stupid I don't know what I put in my product." It screams "stupid" and "don't care."
  4. Glutino makes a good almond cheerios gluten-free
  5. Sounds like a good plan (to get 18-25 thoughts, opinions, experiences). My 2-cents from an oldster is that if the person wasn't diagnosed until 18-25 the family should be supportive. From what I read sometimes here, the families are stunned that the young person has a disease and tries to "talk" them out of celiac or ridicule them out of it. I...
  6. It happened just this year and as many of you know my husband is a "house husband" and doesn't do heavy physical labor and has no hobbies where he's on his knees (like restoring cabinets, etc.). His knees have little golf ball like extensions on the knee caps (both of them) The primary care Dr. feels it's from the celiac - immune system attacking the...
  7. what kind of problems?
  8. anyone familar with these disorders? wondering about symptoms my husband has....
  9. Surgery is being done by orthopaedic surgeon (he did my rotator cuff 3 yrs ago). Not knee replacement, just removal of bursa sacks. He says it'll take 15 mins on each knee, not an invasive surgery. The surgeon drained his knees (it's water build up in sack) and the fluid came back as predicted. There's no way to fix this other than surgery... the bursas...
  10. My husband's GP advises that the bursa in his knees are being affected by his celiac. They both (both knees) are damaged and have to be removed. Normally a knee bursa will get damaged if you have an occupation where you're on your knees a lot, like a carpet layer, a plumber, carpenter, roofer, etc. My husband has never done any of these things...
  11. one other word of caution...they put flavoring in their mashed potatoes (like peppery stuff). Personally, I don't care for it but for my celiac husband the spices are an irritant to him so he can't eat them even if they are gluten-free. I spoke to headquarters andthey told me it's up to the individual store if they want to use the spice or not in the mashed...
  12. sure, makes sense that during the damage stage, the prescription or vitamin or whatever won't be absorbed (either not absorbed all the way or somewhat). After villi healing there should be more absorption. I wonder what the absorption rate is in a healthy, non celiac small intestine --- do normal people absorb 100% or are there degrees of absorption...
  13. Lister, the celiac disease has you bad..but 6 weeks isn't enough time to clear out gluten. Hubby took a few months and even now after 2.5 yrs. Still goes back & forth. He does not eat processed foods as much as other celiacs might; spices and fruits and vegetables are still irritating his guts and gives him symptoms like being glutened. Just...
  14. Judy Please take care and hope you get better quickly my mil had cellulitis last aug & was in hospital for a week. No point of infection entry..her legs swelled due to her congestive heart failure and the skin couldn't take the stress of the stretch from the swelling. This must have lead to a break in skin (?) which lead to the infection.
  15. Lister, unless you have allergies or sensitivities to other foods and you can only eat Ener-g bread only, don't expect it to taste good. It's either an acquired taste or some people just think it's good. Prefer: Kinnikinick or even rolls (frozen section of health food store or whole food) Gillian's brand. to us Ener=g is the bread of last...
  16. Advice from old lady: met husband when I was 17 and married him. He came down with undiagnosed celiac disease in 1977 but I married him anyway in 1979; didn't know what it was but there was dietary issues involved that started during our engagement years when I was 19. Still married to him. In 2003 he was officially diagnosed with celiac disease...
  17. I too thought it was a building co-op until I read your link..... My suggestion for the issue right before the holidays (winter) would be how to include celiacs in holiday parties. The Spring issue should address "inviting celiacs to weddings, graduation, showers - parties" where it's at a hall or restaurant. Tips for the Host/Hostess who wants...
  18. The issue isn't that no one else has celiac in the family, but that you have it and there's a greater possibility for your family now to develop it themselves (believe it's 1 in 22 chance for family members). My husband so far is only one with celiac, but I am sure his father (deceased) had it unknowingly and his younger sister has it (is in denial about...
  19. We had purchased the CSA product guides for 3 years and while they are ok, the products that they show as gluten-free cannot be found in the NJ area; most of the supermarkets noted in the CSA book are not in NJ either, so while it might be a good publicaton for the mid-west or west coast, it is not the proper publication for NJ area. So I stopped buying...
  20. If some of the makeup items aren't gluten-free - and you're using them because they would not be ingested, please indicate that they are not gluten-free for the benefit of those who might be avoiding cosmetics with gluten due to D.H. and for those who have spouses who are celiacs and should not be kissing their made up honeys on the checks right where that...
  21. I had the same issue "going veggie" seemed like a good change for me and I got into the issue of balancing proteins and carbs, balancing legume consumption (for nitrogen) and finding enough sources of calcium, iron, etc. It certainly is a tightrope act maintaining a healthy diet on vegan sources alone. That being said, I am not a vegan/vegetarian as...
  22. Autumn, One piece of advice, not all gastroenterologists are equal. My husband went to several before he was properly diagnosed. They all diagnosed IBS, colitits, illeitis, and mental illness (one Dr. accused him of being a drug addict before he did any tests , accused him of going to him just for drugs - ah, this Dr. didn't give my husband any prescriptions...
  23. Sometimes it's easy to forget that the (Campbell) manufacturer's formula differs from USA and Canada.
  24. My husband has RLS and does not have iron deficiency.....the Requip does it's job but he refuses to take it every night and Dr. feels that Requip will perform better if taken on a daily, nightly basis.
