  1. Lifetime history of GI issues - scope when I was in college, ultimate diagnosis of IBS. Lots of reflux issues, headaches, bloating, tiredness but still doing the things I needed to. I got married, had 3 kids and tried to stay away from processed foods and fatty foods but not religiously and still had issues. Tried a variety of prescription reflux meds. ...
  2. I taped it too because of the topic. He really should have been more clear about the difference between celiac and gluten intolerance. Celiac - no gluten, no matter what. Gluten intolerance (according to him) - recognizable by symptoms & if you have them, no gluten. IMHO, some folks can just reduce it - my hubby finds too much gluten to be an...
  3. I am looking forward to more research being done on this. I believe the study had a small sample group of around 30 some people. Last April a rheumy sent me for an MRI of my head & neck as I was having a lot of joint issues and he didn't like my reflexes. My bloodwork did not show any arthritic conditions. My scan picked up some white matter issues...
  4. GFinDC - like your post & agree with most of it - but I do still like my wine now & again. I tried to eat at a restaurant last Monday and today (Friday) I think I am almost recovered. We went there because we had a gift card & I ordered because the waitress said she was gluten-free and understood....of course she recommended the teriyaki chicken...
  5. I once sat & watched everyone eat nachos in a restaurant because the nachos were fried in the common oil according to the wait staff. ;-( At least I had my wine.....!
  6. Does anyone have a good bread recipe ? I used to get the Kinnikinnick sunflower & flaxseed mix & make it - it was nice & fluffy ! They discontinued it. I have bought Glutino's french breadmix and it's pretty good but very white !
  7. I was 34 and had a wicked bad virus for a week. You know you get the flu and your stomach cramps and you can't keep anything in ? I had that for a full week - I wanted to die. Sounds dramatic but when you expect something to last a couple of days & it just won't quit, it's horrible. At the end of the week I was in the ER getting fluids by IV and a shot...
  8. I have Hy's season salt and it says it's a McCormick product (I just checked) - is Lawry's too ? I am in Canada so maybe that is the difference. I love that McCormick's has full disclosure !
  9. Grimm's meats - and Freybe (says gluten free on the label) -hot dogs, black forest ham, honey maple ham. European weiners Crunchmaster crackers Food Should Taste Good chips - big multigrain bag, box of small bags, multigrain & sweet potato Thai sweet chili sauce Brown rice in big bags Quinoa Frozed chicken breast in box I am sure there is more...
  10. My hubby got it because he saw it. I got sick & miserable on gluten. My doctor was a twit - it all started with a wicked virus that made me unable to eat for a week & I lost 5 pounds - I was very sick. It took me a year to figure out how to eat without being sick. I had a blood test (negative) and then was scheduled for a endoscope 4 months later...
  11. I think it's important to remember that part of these increases is recognition - doctors actually diagnosing autism & celiac, where in the past they blew it off (ugh, and still do !). Both conditions are in the spotlight at the moment so docs are more aware. Both conditions are also difficult to diagnose. Part of the increased celiac diagnosis is...
  12. I agree. I eat a lot of eggs (I have had my cholesterol tested & it's fine). I have one egg a day @ breakfast & often egg salad for lunch (2 eggs, only 1 yolk). The yolk does have some good stuff in it. Buy boxed chicken breast that you can take out individually. Buy quinoa - it's gluten free. IMHO, natural source (ie. real food) is always better...
  13. That was (sadly) hilarious ! I think I have heard all of those at one time or another !!!
  14. British Columbia here...............up north. Love Kinnikinnick....can't wait to try their new breads to see if they are as good as they say they are. I am originally from the Edmonton area.
  15. FWIW, you might want to follow up with a rheumatologist if this continues. I'm very active (42) and have psoriatic arthritis....took awhile to figure out. I chalked it up to sports injuries and then when it got worse had to seek answers. Don't go to no exercise at all - try walking at least. Activity is important for joint mobility and strength. If it...
  16. I was in England and Scotland about 3 years ago for 3 weeks. I brought along a multi compartment lunch bag with a shoulder strap. I carried that everywhere (still do for out of town travel). I carry fruit, small tins of tuna/salmon, crackers and a variety of other foods, sometimes just left over supper & a small ice pack. It's best to be prepared ! Nothing...
  17. I am a fitness instructor & have been gluten-free for almost 10 years. I saw great improvements in endurance and fitness going gluten-free...I was sick & tired a lot before. Having said that, I am a careful eater and I like to cook. I eat a lot of brown rice and sweet potatoes/yams. I eat a lot of salads and vegetables....and a lot of meat/protein...
  18. Most of us have been were you are. You're fairly new to all this & pissed off..THAT I get !!! lol It takes awhile to learn to cope & even just accept this mess - no longer eating what you want, heck, just no longer being able to eat safely out. It also takes awhile for those around you to truly accept it as well. The more consistent you are, the...
  19. I have been eating these for months on top of my breakfast with no problem. The dried blueberries & cherries DO bother me (they are on shared equipment).
  20. I have eaten a lot of flavors of Food Should Taste good without any problems. I have not eaten the cheddar ones. Having said that, I would probably react to the dairy - do you have any issues with dairy ? Concentrated dairy based flavorings definitely don't sit well with me!
  21. When I get glutened it is a general cramping pain, with some intense bouts, with nausea and usually heartburn later. If it's really bad, my lower back can hurt but maybe that's my posture. The lasting pain tends to be on the right side, down low and/or under the rib cage. It can be sharp and quite painful - it's been awhile since I've been glutened ...
  22. Yum ! It's so good that I am taking it to my relatives and putting it out there - actually tastes like the real thing. Yeah, it's rich & buttery. For some reason the package I bought was missing the back label, but I found the directions on the website.
  23. Do not be afraid to throw out food!!!! Be gracious if someone gives you something, take it home, & dump it. Better yet, have a non celiac try it - tell the person someone liked it but that you didn't eat it because you were afraid of cross contamination - but appreciated the gesture. I have done this - the giver gets apprecaition but you get your...
  24. Haha, I like that - the diet is pretty easy! Maybe the right word is basic ? I do the same - just say a lot of real food is gluten free, it's how it's made or processed that puts it off limits. I also add that cross contamination is huge! Fortunately, in time people get it, esp. when they see you be really strict about it & consistent. A typical dieter...
  25. I do have my DH's support but it did take a bit of time. Thing is, he could see what was happening to me. I had a very bad virus where I couldn't eat, lost weight and it probably took me a year to figure out what had happened to me. During that time he might not have been too supportive, but I was kind of in denial too. At some point I figured out the...
