  1. Check out this thread for the very best bread ever. It has flax seed meal in it, and some bean flour, so it has fiber, nutrition, and what's most important - FLAVOR! Tastes just like whole wheat bread. Open Original Shared Link
  2. I wonder if those who are contacting Kimberly Clark about what, if anything, they dust their products with would post those replies - IN A DIFFERENT THREAD. I have emailed the makers of Angle Soft toilet paper and will do the same when I get a response. This thread is so depressing to read that it would be nice to have the information elsewhere. Today...
  3. About the mold spores in the air. I'm sure an air filtering machine would be useful. I'm also wondering if, for the immediate concern, if placing an exhaust fan in the window and blowing the air outside might help. I use one of those square floor fans and sit in on the window ledge and stuff towels around it to seal it in the window and turn it on facing...
  4. Thanks for the tip, Hathor. It's always nice to have a choice. Isn't it great to make a gluten-free meal that's successful and that others enjoy as well?
  5. You bet. My gluten-eating husband really likes it - even my first attempt which was sort of a flop because I let it rise too long. He's anxious for me to bake another loaf.
  6. Now and then I read in a thread that someone has cleaned their kitchen (or other places) to get the residue gluten off counters and cupboards - and they say they use bleach. Each time this is mentioned I'm wondering to myself - does bleach really have any affect on gluten. I know it is a good disinfectant. But does it eliminate gluten on contact???? It...
  7. Beware of the green! If this were a perfect world, the grass from wheat and barley would be safe. Unfortunately, there is a high chance of the grain of the plant getting into the grass that's used for the green. Last year I took barley grass on a daily basis and felt like it was not setting well with me. Later I read about the contamination issues on...
  8. The following is from information supplied by members of the avoiding corn forum.... Re: toilet paper, paper towels, paper napkins - containing cornstarch. It is often in the packaging - to keep the plastics from sticking together - that the starch is used. You would have to contact each manufacturer to find out if they do use a starch, and what it is...
  9. Welcome to the forum. This is the best place to learn about gluten intolerance and Celiac disease. You'll be a pro in no time. And then you're going to have to change your member name
  10. The Spice Hunter is a brand of spices at one of the health-food stores in my area (it was either Whole Foods or Wild Oats). I called the company and a rep told me that the spice jar labels will list every ingredient so if a gluten or corn product isn't listed, it's not in the jar. They do produce other gluten foods such as pasta, however, they clean...
  11. I can't help you about the book, as I haven't seen it. But, when I'm considering a book, if I can get it at the library, I'll check it and review it first before I buy - and IF I buy it, I always try to find a used book online at much less the price of a new book. As far as the "diet" - iit's really just a matter of learning what is safe to eat and what...
  12. That's too funny.
  13. I had heard about Kimberly Clark (and others) dusting with cornstarch, but not wheat flour. I don't use paper tissues, and, since I have to stay clear of corn also, my choices of toilet paper are limited to Scott and Angle Soft which currently don't contain cornstarch - which I use sometimes for nose blowing (but usually I use a hanky) Dusting is a problem...
  14. Thanks for a very informative post, Rachel. I gave up a long time ago on the OMG thread. I know you've been doing a lot of research and we are the happy recipients of your work. I don't have much to comment or add to your post, but one thing stood out to me - the fact that Americans are far too dependent on antibiotics and doctors are far too willing...
  15. Oh my, this is sooooo.... GOOD! I thought I was eating wheat bread!!! My darling husband has voluntered to quit having bread in the house, bless him. I offered to bake him some gluten-free bread and since so many were raving about this bread recipe, I gave it a try. Unfortunately, I let it rise too much and it fell after I took it out of the oven,...
  16. That's what I figured, but a novice in the kitchen would probably not know about sauces. By the way, your version sounds pretty good - now if I can figure a way to make it without dairy!
  17. Gee, some of these symptoms are really awful. I guess I'm not so bad off, afterall. Mostly urgent and frequent and violent D, irritability, fatigue and generally feeling crappy - for about two days, then a week of being sluggish. Even so, I really don't want to be glutened, either. I LIKE feeling good!
  18. WARNING: traditional white sauce is made with wheat flour - no can do and be gluten-free canned creamed soups quite often contain flours for the thickening - check labels. If you went with the rice, just melt grated cheese over the rice and forget the sauce (grate it yourself, packaged grated cheese might be dusted with flour to keep from sticking...
  19. I don't like the gummy interior of the Chebe breads. I still have one package of their bread mix. I'm thinking of mixing it half-n-half with another rice-based flour and see if that improves the texture - could ruin it, too.
  20. I can see how confusing it must be for you. It took me years to isolate what my problem was, so I can relate. If your diet has not changed and you had fewer and less severe symptoms when away from your home, and they become more severe in your home, then it starts to point to environment. Can you stay with a friend for a week and see if you improve again...
  21. Tea bags do not congain gluten - they are stapled or crinkle-pressed (is that the correct term???). If they were "glued" with gluten, they would fall apart in hot water. Re: the headaches. It certainly could be from gluten, but it could also be from something else. Could be environmental - exposure to an airborne allergen, etc. I get headaches if I go...
  22. Here's the info from their website about the yellow cake mix: Sounds good.
  23. It surely is a game of detection I hope you're able to isolate the problem(s) soon. But, don't throw out the cat!
  24. Sonja, it sounds like there is something in your home that is glutening you. There is a very enlightening thread on this board Open Original Shared Link - one poster mentioned that they had to throw out the sugar they had in a canister because it had been contaminated with flour from pre-gluten-free baking. Often it's the non-obvious things that can...
