  1. I've been giving this diet some thought, too. I must be addicted to potatoes because these are surely the very hardest food for me to give up. I've only read a bit on the internet about the diet, but did pick up that one needs to eliminate the PBGs - potatoes, beans, grains. Well, I'm still eating rice, and some beans, but until I can conquor this potatoe...
  2. Oh, so true! I usually am on the couch, with both dogs, reading a novel when the fireworks go off, while DH is asleep in bed. This year, I may still be on the couch, but hopefully asleep - I caught hubby's cold - darn!
  3. I highly recommend the nasel wash. I know of others who eliminated sinus infections just by doing this - and have read from several here on this board who after going gluten-free never had another sinus infection (as have those who have posted in this thread). I want to add one more thing. My husband had a lot of trouble with a stuffy head and sneezing...
  4. I agree with everything Courtney posted. I'll just add this one thing. Feeling "guilty" about NOT providing gluten foods is self-imposed guilt. You would not be doing anything wrong by making the household gluten-free. There should be no shame, no guilt, no nothing... just a good feeling of protecting ALL your children - and your husband should be 10...
  5. Like the others, I now associate being sick with eating gluten, and even though I'd really like a gluten food, I definitely won't eat it on purpose. But that took several times of being sick for several days at a time to get to this point. By the way, welcome to the board. Feel free to rant and rave about your limitations. This is the place to come and...
  6. Well, it's been about a week now on the L-Glutamine. I am so encouraged. After having been gluten-free for several months I still have had D most days - up until a few days ago. Wow, this is great. I'm still cautious about the results as it's only been a week, but certainly am hopeful.
  7. Hi Katie I dragged out the results of an Lame Advertisement food sensitivity test from several years ago and here's the list of things to avoid acording to them: all milk products (obviously) all cheeses (of course) imitation milk products lactaid milk chocolate* guar gum** *chocolate: that's because most candy bars and chocolate chips are...
  8. ibpeterson Welcome to the forum. Most people here have a gluten intolerance/celiac disease, which means that they cannot ingest gluten without it giving them an autoimmune reaction. The enzyme that helps a normal person digest gluten would not be of any value to the person for whom gluten is sort of like a poison. As you read more here in the...

    ARCHIVED Gratitude!

Am I the only one who LOVES fruitcake?????
  10. Dieoff is certainly a possibilty as some have reported this happening and they would feel worse before feeling better. When I first tried to take probiotics I would have very caustic D right away. I would try to stay with them because *everyone* said it was so important to good health. But, the negatives outweighed the positives and I stopped after trying...
  11. I'm an old woman now and my son's baby days are long since past. When I was a young monther I didn't know very much about food allergies, and my son's ped. didn't either. It wasn't until he was 8 and was having serious asthma problems that anyone thought to check on allergies. IF I had been wiser then I would have not introduced ANY foods that could potentially...
  12. Earlier this week L-glutamine was mentioned in another thread. I did a quick google search on it and found a good article. I copied part of it and provided a link to the article - here's the thread - my post is #10. Open Original Shared Link I started taking L-Glutamine shortly after reading about it on the above thread. I have not had any bad reaction...
  13. I'm with Dessa. We don't really know if this was a legitimate study, and, since it wasn't published, there's no way to verify. I don't think that an occasional consumption of a high-carb/low protein cereal is bad for one's health (even an occasional nibble on a cereal box - the problem is the large amounts that many people consume of these things...
  14. FloraSmart by Renew Life. It's enteracoated tablets that don't dissolve until they are past the stomach. I had to order them on-line because neither Whole Foods or Wild Oats carries this, although they carry other Renew Life products. I tried saurkraut and although I like it cooked, it was difficult to eat the stuff that was minimally heated and still...
  15. I can certainly relate. I get D often first thing in the morning, then a half hour later, then an hour later. After that, I'm fine. No cramps, no aweful glutened feeling, just very loose bowels. I had D off and on for most of my adult life (I'm 60 now) but have been gluten-free only since July this year. I just assumed it's going to take time, and maybe...
  16. I did a search to find a recipe for banana nut bread and found this one from 2005. Oh my gosh - this is soooo good. I wanted to make my husband some bnbread but, to keep myself safe, didn't want to use gluten flour. We both really like this bread. We're having company for dessert tomorrow night and it is definitely going to be offered.
  17. sorry, wrong thread!
  18. I can relate to this second-guessing about health issues. It's not like everything is cut and dried. And when one has been doing all the detective work without help of (competent) professionals (not to mention the setbacks from doctors who don't have a clue) it does sort of chisel away at one's confidence. I've spent lots of money on different treatments...
  19. This could be brain fog from gluten or another allergy source. Don't worry too much about it - we've all been there and the fog eventually lifts and thinking becomes more clear.
  20. Others have done the gluten challenge and hopefully they will give you the benefit of their experience. I seem to remember that they recommend just eating some whole wheat crackers or something that doesn't also contain another possible allergen, like milk, egg, soy, etc. I've never done the gluten challenge on purpose. Accidental glutening has been enough...
  21. I don't see doctors much either. I did have a blood test for food sensitivities that showed sensitivity to gluten, but I didn't understand the ramifications of that and didn't go gluten-free for many years. Having found this forum has helped me so much in understanding what it all means. However, I, too, wanted to be sure and certainly didn't want to go...
  22. Rather than "see" gluten, I "feel" it. Whenever I'm in the grocery store and pick up anything, especially after reading the label and finding that it has gluten in it, I feel like my hands are contaminated and can't wait to finish up and wash off all that bad stuff. My hands almost itch. I know it's just psychological, but that's how I "see" gluten. Itchy...
  23. Thanks Nikki (and Angie) Look really really good. I buy a turkey breakfast sausage by Diestel (frozen tube) that would work well with that. Can any of you cooking wizards suggest the best way to replace that egg (besides egg replacer by EnerG, which has corn, which I can't have).
  24. First, welcome to the forum. Re: cheese I can no longer have dairy so I'm not reading labels on cheeses these days. I would assume that the problem may be in cheese spreads and whether or not they use wheat or other gluten ingredients to make it soft. Some cheeses are naturally soft and spreadable, though.
