ARCHIVED Do I Understand This Correctly ?
ArtGirl replied to Mamato2boys's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Very interesting..... could have been my story. I've lost most the hair on my arms, along with the eyebrow thing, but hair has been growing back. I always attributed it to the kelp supplements (iodine) I've been taking for a few years now, but maybe it's because I reduced gluten intake and finally went gluten-free five months ago. Last month my thyroid... -
ARCHIVED Do I Understand This Correctly ?
ArtGirl replied to Mamato2boys's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Let me rephrase your statement a little. If you catch it before you have damage then you have gluten sensitivity, however if that person continued to eat gluten then they would be DIAGNOSED WITH celiac disease. The combination of genes must play a major roll in determining if one's sensitivity to gluten causes a significant escalation of the autoimmune... -
ARCHIVED Do I Understand This Correctly ?
ArtGirl replied to Mamato2boys's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
ditto celiac - sensitivity - intolerant .......... probably all related with celiac/DH being the worst as far as intestinal damage and neurological issues. But intolerance can sure wreck havoc on the rest of the body. Certainly one should NOT conclude that if one is not officially diagnosed celiac and is only sensitive/intolerant that one need only... -
ARCHIVED Another Cross Contamination Question
ArtGirl replied to sandree's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can only repeat what others have said. One day, after watching hubby touch every handle and knob in the kitchen after eating a gluten-filled sandwich, I suggested that he consider gluten as wet paint that doesn't ever dry and wherever he touches puts the paint on that surface. It helped some. I also noticed that at dinner he would butter his bread... -
I've been gluten-free for about five months now. At first it was interesting and challenging to learn all I could and search for recipes and really learn about eating gluten-free. Then came the pitty party and ups and downs emotionally. After a few weeks what was interesting became a chore and I longed for the pre-gluten-free days when I ate anything...

ARCHIVED Do I Understand This Correctly ?
ArtGirl replied to Mamato2boys's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This celiac vs gluten intolerance has been a puzzle for me, also. I've not had a biopsy but did show two gluten intolerant genes via Enterolab. But, I also did not show any malabsorbtion. I've been reacting to gluten for at least 40 years and have not developed either full-blown Celiac or any other autoimmune diseases. I guess I can consider myself very lucky... -
Hard cheese does not usually contain gluten, although blue cheese is grown on bread so it does. Cheese SAUCE is another animal because usually grated cheese is added to a white sauce (milk or water and FLOUR) to make it a smooth sauce. If a Mexican restaurant just adds grated cheese to the food, it shoud be okay, especially cheeses like cheddar and...

ARCHIVED So I Just Got A New Crockpot.....
ArtGirl replied to DingoGirl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Lots of good recipes and ideas. I was just thinking that if, by chance, one were to overcook the veggies, they could be pureed in the blender to make a "creamed" soup (add cream or milk if you can have it, but I can't, so I would only add some more broth or even water). Actually, I use this method of blending veggies and broth to make a sauce to pour... -
Nutro also makes a Lamb and Rice biscuit. My two dogs are on the Lamb and Rice dry and canned foods (mixed together with boiled hamburger). The Chihuahua had been on Prescription I/D for years because of stomach aches from "regular" dog food. I was a little concerned that the Nutro food would also be a problem for him, which is why I added the boiled...

ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Dessert Success
ArtGirl replied to pamelaD's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Looks yummy. I'm going to copy off this recipe and make it soon. Isn't it nice when the gluten-free food is enjoyed by those not restricted. -
I would never have tried these - they're pricey - but you get what you pay for! Virgil's root beer Reed's Ginger Beer - best ginger ale ever! Speaking of ginger ale - making my own with sparkling water with fresh ginger is one of my favorite drinks (with Stevia it's sugar-free, which the drinks above are not). Mary's Gone Crackers - I just love...

At first thought.... turkey pizza, ugh. Then when I read that there's no tomato sauce - it started to look really good. (Too bad I can't eat cheese, but, if I could, I'd give this one a try).

Bummer!

Here's a celery stuffing that is yummy! Take equal amounts finely chopped walnuts and chopped dates - add enough cashew butter to make it stick together. What are your favorites?

I was pondering turkey leftovers as my turkey soup was simmering on the stove. What do YOU do with the leftover turkey-day feast? My standard fare after cooking any kind of poultry is, after most of the meat is removed, to put all the bones in a pot of water and simmer for several hours to make soup broth (I add onions, celery and garlic to the pot, too...

ARCHIVED Glutened Soap?
ArtGirl replied to adam2008's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It might be safe... as long as you don't wash your face and get it in your mouth, or as long as you don't get it on your hands and touch food afterwards (you might want to wash your hands good after using it). Personally, I'd not feel safe using any soaps/shampoos that contain gluten. -
ARCHIVED How Did Your Thanksgiving Go?
ArtGirl replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
It was just hubby and me. We had a simple meal: All gluten-free Roast turkey - gravey thickened with potato starch Mashed potatoes (with only margarine in it - no milk - it's still good that way) Green Beans (plain) Swiss chard cooked with onions and turkey bacon for flavor Apple Tart (with nut and date crust - no flour at all) Hubby had some bread... -

Yes, very interesting. So, it's not "all in your head" anymore, but "all in your genes" Isn't the human body incredible??? There more that is learned about it the more I am awed by how complicated and intricate it is. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease: Not Just A Gi Problem
ArtGirl replied to Sophiekins's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've been printing out all the articles linked in this thread, and one in particular was a real light-bulb experience. Open Original Shared Link This short article is about Sjogren's disease (the glands that produce lubricating secretions - eyes, mouth, vagina - become escessivly dry). I'm reading the list of signs/symptoms and I recognize 4 out... -
Certainly it's not good for you if you have a sensitivity to corn.... but generally speaking?, I've not heard this either.

Some people have strong reactions to the smallest amount of corn - Vit. C, citric acid, Xanathan gum, dextrose, plastics dusted with cornstarch, etc. - all those places that a little corn is hidden. However, if you think of the accumulative effect of all these sources of corn, that might add up to a siginificant amount. But, in the end, as you say, it's an... -
ARCHIVED Not Eating
ArtGirl replied to armywife's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Oh, yes. If it weren't for this forum I'd still be struggling. There are so many places to look for gluten, like dog food and hand lotion. And vitamins - gosh, I must have thrown away a hundred dollars in supplements and vitamins after learning that they had gluten in them (and corn - I have a corn allergy, which I didn't isolate until some time after going... -

I think the benefit from local honey is that being exposed to tiny bits of local pollen builds up a resistence to them - sort of like taking allergy shots. I dno't know how much you wouold have to consume for this benefit, though. I do buy raw honey.
