I have heard that people who are allergic to bananas can react to laytex and also quiwi fruit. Something about the chemical composition being similar.

ARCHIVED Potato Starch
ArtGirl replied to georgie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My understanding is that potato starch is just that, the starch from the potato. It can be used like any starch in a recipe. It is sometimes called potato flour starch. Potato flour is ground up dehydrated potato. It is much heavier than the starch, and can be rather gummy. However, it makes good gravies and thickener for soup. I've even made potato soup... -
Interesting articles. I never have liked milk in my tea - don't even use sugar, but do like lemon sometimes. Now I find that I was doing myself a favor by not adding milk.

Jukie - I made the ORANGE WALNUT BREAD tonight - and it was a success for me, too. Husband really liked it and I did too (I'm much more picky - can't stand baked goods that are gritty or gummy). And I made it the way you did with all the substitutes. Thank again for a delicious nut bread.

Same here. It sat in my 'fridge for over a month. I used it very sparingly the first time and my husband had no reaction. Then last week I fixed some baked fish with the ghee (Purity Farms) and he still had no reaction. So now I'm feeling like it is quite safe (my symptoms to dairy are rather vague, so my husband is the guinea pig).

I'm just curious what causes these odd characters on some of the posts. Here's an example: ½ teaspoon ground cumin 1 cup “instant” (5-minute) rice I've noticed that this is not random but is consistent with a particular poster or two.

Thanks, Jukie, for this recipe - I'm going to give it a try very soon. I, too, am egg and casein-free, which makes bread/cake recipes difficult to make. Kolka - Ghee is clarified butter - it has had the proten, casein, separated out of it and is safe for the casein-intolerant. I have been using it lately and have had no problem. My husband, who has an...

ARCHIVED My Dad
ArtGirl replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had the genetic test done through Enterolab because I didn't want to go the M.D. route with no insurance. I have two gluten intolerant genes. Well, that means that I got one from both parents. I wonder about my dad, also. (He passed away several years ago). We weren't very close and he was gone a lot of the time, but I still remember he had some kind of... -
I have been eating this bread, also. It's rather dry, though, for my taste - but is a BIG IMPROVEMENT over the rice breads (ready made). Nothing compares with homemade, though. I have found a good bread recipe here on this board, so even though I can't use yours, I do have an alternative.

ARCHIVED Eczema/psoriasis
ArtGirl replied to Mike44's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have just a few very mild spots of ezcema on my face and also some what I think is psoriasis on my forehead. Although they've been worse in the past, there hasn't been much change since going allergen-free. In fact, a new tiny spot of ezcema popped up just a few weeks ago. But maybe it will take several more months for improvement - I can only hope. -
Darn! too many eggs (I can maybe get away with one egg in a recipe) and can't have the milk. Oh well.

Protein powders that have no allergens are difficult to come by. I've given up since they all contain either some form of corn derivative, or soy, or, as you say, are nasty. The only one that I thought was palatiable was the ones made with whey, which I can't have now. A good smoothy that can be low in sugar (if sweetened with stevia or partially so) and...

No, but you can delete the contents (edit), as long as there's at least one word in it, and you do this shortly after posting it. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum Larry What a happy accident! I'm thinking maybe this would work as a pizza crust - what do you think? Maybe even mini crusts. Oh, and if you sweetened the bread and topped it with fruit, maybe it would be something that resembles a pastry with fruit in the middle..... must start experimenting. And, yes, please post the original...

ARCHIVED Dairy Free And Egg Free And Soy Free (except For A Couple)
ArtGirl replied to AndreaB's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Andrea.... I'm glad you added to this thread - I was going to try to find it so I could bump it. I wanted to tell you how wonderful those cashew cheese recipes are. I've been making cheese sauce and loving it - I could eat them with a spoon. This stuff is great A few nights ago I put the "cheese" on a Mexican casserole, then last night put what... -
To those of you who like to research things - has anyone ever read if there's a gluten link to Parkinson's? Has anyone with this ever gone gluten-free and noted any improvement? Just wondering. My father died from Parkinson's and I'm almost certain, looking back, that he was at least gluten-intolerant (I got one of my two g.i. genes from him, afterall...

ARCHIVED Sore Throat - I Think I'm Getting Sick
ArtGirl replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
For those of you who are reading this thread, I want to relay my latest confirmation of this method. I have had only three colds since I learned about this way of treating viruses a couple years ago - each one lasted only about 3-4 days and the symptoms were mild. (Previous to this I would ALWAYS get bronchitis with a cold and would be sick for weeks). ... -
ARCHIVED Sore Throat - I Think I'm Getting Sick
ArtGirl replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes, when it's thick like that, it is difficult. You just do what you can - you don't want it to back up into your ears. I don't have a problem, but my husband seems to sputter and cough a lot doing this. Maybe his technique isn't like mine. I just pour a bit of salt water in my hand, press the opposite nostril closed and snort up the water - there's... -
I don't think this is something that one can do on one's own. It takes a dental specialist who knows how to do the chelation. They have to go at this in stages so that they reduce the likelihood of more mercury entering the bloodstream when the fillings are removed. When my older fillings need to be replaced (I'm 60 now) I am adament at having non-mercury...

ARCHIVED Can You Sense Gluten In The Air?
ArtGirl replied to acousticmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't react, physically, to bread smells ( I love the smell of freshly baked bread), but I relate to the feeling of being contaminated. I have a good imagination and I always feel contaminated after shopping in a grocery store. -
I haven't gotten a hernia from coughing, but I did throw my neck out of place with a very bad coughing spell. Had to go to the chiropractor a couple times to get it back in place. I was outside a fabric store in my car when the coughing started. Must have coughed for ten minutes solid - was getting desperate. Finally, it let up enough so I could go into...

ARCHIVED Day Two gluten-free
ArtGirl replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was thinking about how it must be more difficult for the typical male in our society to approach the challenge of fixing gluten-free foods. I'm of the generation of women who started off cooking, first at home and then later in marriage. Our refrigerator is full of left-over gluten-free foods. If my husband had to fix special meals, he'd have a very hard... -
ARCHIVED About To Go Dairy Free And Depressed As All Get Out About It
ArtGirl replied to eLaurie's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Rant away! It does help. I'm dairy-free, too. And I miss cheese. However, AndreaB has posted some recipes for dairy/soy-free cheeses. I've tried one of the cheese sauces and it really did taste like cheddar cheese and was creamy. Here's the thread: Open Original Shared Link I like almond milk (rice/soy milks don't taste good to me at all) - love it... -
I had heartburn often, acid refulx now and then, and occasional gastritis. It was confusing because I couldn't always tell what would set it off, but I did know that I couldn't eat very much raw vegetables or my stomach would hurt. After about two months gluten-free (and corn-free) all my stomach problems disappeared.

ARCHIVED Sore Throat - I Think I'm Getting Sick
ArtGirl replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have found that I can reduce the symptoms and duration of a virus to about half or less, once I come down with it. Here's what I do. --sinus wash at least three times a day, and rinse eyes, too (oh, so soothing) --begin sucking on zinc lozynges immediately at the first sign of a scratchy throat and keep it up for at least two days, preferably three...
