  1. If the biopsy showed mild blunting and your child has improved on the diet, he has celiac. richard
  2. I never weighed more than 155 (5'10") despite eating whatever I wanted and within 2 years of going gluten-free I was almost 210. I dropped back into the 170s but have added some back on. You can no longer eat like you used to and it's going to take more exercise, as well. What you used to eat without gaining weight will now add weight. And if you're eating...
  3. Ciabatta recipe from 125 Best Gluten-Free Recipes. And I don't like gluten-free bread. richard
  4. Prilosec is an acid blocker for acid reflux. Used to be prescription only but now can be bought OTC. Last time I checked it was gluten-free. richard
  5. Sounds fine to me. What brand? richard
  6. It could be psoriasis. richard
  7. If you've been diagnosed with celiac then you'd be irresponsible NOT to have blood tests and endoscopies done. According to all celiac experts I know of, ALL first-dregree relatives should be tested. richard
  8. Age doesn't matter. richard
  9. Don't know of any other reason for a ttg that high. You've got celiac. Having celiac does indeed increase the risk of certain cancers (although it drops lower when you stay gluten-free), but the risk stays low even when you're not gluten-free. richard
  10. Probably too late but McCormick brand Montreal seasoning is gluten-free. richard
  11. In nearly five years never found a rum that isn't OK. richard
  12. I'm not a doctor but it sounds like she has celiac disease. She has the gene and her antibodies were high. She improved enormously on the diet. That's enough for any celiac expert to say she has it. The tests after she had been gluten-free mean absolutely nothing whatsoever because she hadn't been eating gluten. IMO, she needs to be gluten-free. richard
  13. Zatarain's has always said they'd list gluten. If the soy sauce doesn't list wheat, it doesn't have it. Every soy sauce I've ever seen lists wheat if it has it since that's a MAJOR ingredient. richard
  14. You really have to learn to call places yourself, but I can tell you that RL tells us NOT to eat anything with spices and definitely not to eat anything with sauces. Anything you have must be plain and cooked carefully. I wouldn't eat there. richard
  15. Yes, celiac can have an effect on liver enzymes, but that doesn't necessarily mean any permanent liver damage. But celiac tests are also not reliable in any child under 18-24 months, so the celiac tests on your child really mean nothing. All that said, you've seen your child get better going gluten-free, so you should stick with it. richard
  16. Folks, you really have to look further. Here's the ingredients of the beef patty. Beef Patty: 100% pure USDA inspected beef; no additives, no fillers, no extenders. If this isn't gluten-free, nothing is. No guarantees about CC though. richard
  17. Yes. BTW, in the U.S., if maltodextrin is made from wheat, it must say so. richard
  18. The only way I know to eat more cheaply on a gluten-free diet is to eat foods that are naturally gluten-free. Meats, veggies, fruit, beans, various candies and ice creams and so on. Don't buy $5 loaves of bread or make ones with expensive flours. If you must have cookies or muffins or whatever, make your own. I don't like gluten-free bread anyway, so I use...
  19. I think his parents have the right to make this decision, but they should stop wasting their money with the clinic in Mexico. Complete quackery. richard
  20. At work, it's probably a good idea to be paranoid about anything that everybody eslse uses. I do use the microwave but the stuff I heat is in a container I brought. I can't answer about the water. Some studies have shown that in some places tap water is better than some bottled waters. Or buy one of those small pitchers with a filter. Iodized salt is...
  21. Popcorn and popcorn oil are OK. The best selling toppings (Flavacol for one) are gluten-free but I can't guarantee you every place has them. In general, popcorn should be one of the safest things you can have. richard
  22. If you reread the box you'll see it says they're made in a FACILITY that has wheat, not on the same line. In fact, my memory is that they have their own line and possibly their own room. richard
  23. I'd agree about the organic being gluten-free. Heinz seems to be legally paranoid about saying distilled vinegar is gluten-free. richard
  24. Prevacid is gluten-free and all antibiotics I've ever seen. BUT, you still just need to call the companies. If a company tells you the product is supposed to be gluten-free but they can't guarantee the ingredients from a supplier, don't worry about it. It's gluten-free. richard
  25. Balsamic vinegar is gluten-free and so is distilled vinegar. Malt vinegar is not. Mini-lecture -- If you are going to stay gluten-free, you cannot simply try things without checking them and you can't let friends "make" you try stuff. Odds are high that the two items you named are gluten-free, but you can't just eat things with your fingers crossed. ...
