  1. Obviously I can't diagnose online, but her rash sounds nothing like the DH I had. In fact, my DH didn't really resemble a rash. More like blisters. Other symptoms certainly seem to suggest possible celiac, though. richard
  2. Every mayo I've ever checked has been gluten-free. Best, Hellmans, Kraft, Kroger and on and on. richard
  3. Never ever found a balsamic vinegar (I'm talking the vinegar, not dressing) that has gluten. richard
  4. Personally I wouldn't take antibiotics for no known reason. But froma gluten perspective virtually all prescription meds are gluten-free. I've never heard of an antibiotic that has gluten. richard
  5. Well, as sick as I was I know my choices are: A) be gluten free and weigh more, or eat gluten, be skinnier and then die. No choice there. richard
  6. I looked perfectly healthy (I was slim but within a normal weight for my size) until I got so sick I had to be hospitalized for 11 days and miss 10 weeks of work. Although I had been somewhat tired from what turned out to be anemia, I was pretty much OK until I got so sick I couldn't function. I hope it doesn't take that to convince your doctor. richard
  7. I don't remember seeing that info in Roben's book (I have it and do use it), but there once was a time when CSA warned about annatto (I'm not sure why, but CSA is often unnecessarily alarmist), so she might have been following their advice at the time. The book is now several years old. Roben does not have celiac disease herself but she occasionally answers...
  8. I can't remember ever finding food coloring with gluten. richard
  9. Im not sure which cookbook you're talking about but I'm fairly certain annatto is not a relative of wheat. Here's what it is: Annatto is a derivative of the achiote trees of tropical regions of the Americas, used to produce a red food coloring. Annatto is produced from the reddish pulp which surrounds the seed of the achiote (Bixa orellana L.). It is...
  10. Lots of lunch meats are gluten-free. With Oscar Meyer all you have to do is read the ingredients. Any gluten would be listed. Hillshire Farms and Carl Buddig are gluten-free. Most Sara Lee but not all (although the prepackaged ones might all be gluten-free). I think that all Boarshead lunch meats are gluten-free now. Generally speaking my experience has...
  11. The grain does not reach the meat. This is not a gluten problem. richard
  12. Annatto is gluten-free. richard
  13. My mother used to be absolutely convinced she reacted to MSG in Chinese foods at restaurants. Then she discovered A) a couple of times she was sure she reacted she found out the restaurant did not use MSG in anything, and she was eating processed foods with MSG without knowing it and wasn't reacting at all. So much for her MSG reactions. richard
  14. I've never found a butter that has gluten. Cheetos are indeed gluten-free, but they are made on lines where gluten products are made. Some people in the past have said they have problems with contamination is some Lays products. richard
  15. By USDA law, if chicken or another raw meat has something with nutritional value -- including wheat barley, rye, oats -- it has to be clearly listed. All you need to do is read. I've never found a plain chicken or turkey with gluten. The chicken broth is just that, chicken juices. richard
  16. Conscious sedation with some Versed and you won't remember a thing. It's easy. richard
  17. If your sister got better and you have the gene and you actually got better for a while, I think there's certainly a chance you have celiac. And you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. You haven't been gluten-free long enough to fully heal yet so what you really need to try VERY hard to do for a good while is eat simply and avoid all potential...
  18. USDA rule -- Anything that adds nutritional value to plain raw meat, such as beef, chicken, turkey, pork and so on, must be clearly listed in the ingredients. This includes wheat or barley. So to determine whether raw meat is gluten-free, all you have to do is read. I've never found a plain raw chicken or turkey that has gluten. I don't worry about...
  19. It's a flavor enhancer. A quick search on the Internet will give you more than you could ever read about it. richard
  20. I can't name a gum that I know DOES have gluten. richard
  21. La Choy regular and lite are both gluten-free. In my experience, soy sauce ALWAYS lists wheat if it has it. It's a major ingredient. richard
  22. Grace collpased from cardiac arrest while running with her college track team Jan. 10, 2005. She died Jan. 12. We still don't know the cause. Open Original Shared Link richard
  23. Italy is supposed to be just about the best country in the world for people with celiac, and Europe in general is far ahead of the U.S. But the U.S. is improving. richard
  24. Hydrogenated may not be particularly good for anybody, but it almost never has gluten, and now if it's made from wheat it has to be listed that way. I've never heard of it being made from barley or rye. Cool Whip is definitely gluten-free and chocolate milk should be, although I can't guarantee you that every brand in the world is. richard
  25. I was so sick I had no choice but to take 10 weeks off. No, it's not good for a career, but then neither is going to work and underperforming or barely performing at all. richard
