    A week or two gluten-free is not nearly enough time to see significant improvement, even for a child. But the biopsy is probably a good idea. I've had two and they were a breeze. richard
  3. Saying they don't test for gluten is nothing more than a legal CYA. Few companies actually test for gluten. The statement really means almost nothing. In the U.S., if maltodextrin has wheat it must by law clearly say so on the label. If it didn't say so in the ingredients, the maltodextrin was gluten-free. richard

    My villi were flat. Iwas hospitalized and missed 10 weeks of work. Four months after starting the diet I was working but doing little more. It was about 10 months before I felt "normal" again. richard
  5. If your son actually has DH, it can possibly take months for that to completely clear and longer if he gets gluten. Everybody is different, though. My DH cleared almost immediately. richard
  6. Some hospitals are really good but many hopsitals do a terrible job with the gluten-free diet. The hospital dietician might understand it, but that doesn't mean the kitchen workers do.   9. Supposedly somewhere out there there is one mega butter flavor of one popcorn that isn't gluten-free, but other than that all the popcorns I've ever checked or heard about have been gluten-free. Pop Secret is gluten-free. richard
  10. If you suspect allergies see an allergist, but if you suspect celiac disease, you need a GI. celiac disease is not an allergy. Your regular doctor, however, can run the bank of blood tests for celiac disease. richard
  11. Outback fries actually are gluten-free and at many Outbacks they are cooked in dedicated fryers. They are not listed as gluten-free because this isn't true at all and because in some the fryers are too close to each other. You'd have to check with your local Outback. richard
  12. Weight gain after going gluten-free is VERY common because you start absorbing things. I gained 70 pounds in two years (30 pounds of that was OK). Still should shed 20 of it. richard

  14. White vinegar is gluten-free. It is sometimes grain-based but almost always corn. And when it is wheat based (less than 5 percent of the time), the distilling takes care of the stuff you don't want. This information is now four years old but the wrong info is still out there all over the place. richard

  16. All you can do is try it. I think it will be tough for you to keep from getting contaminated, but if you like this position this much, you can give it a go and see what happens. Even if you don't have obvious symptoms, you should go back for blood testing to make sure. richard
  17. I doubt that they list potential contamination. I doubt they even control all the ingredients. The only hot dog I've EVER found that wasn't gluten-free is Nathan's.   18. A positive Ttg and a postive reaction to the diet equals a diagnosis in some doctors' books. Any idea how many samples this doctor took? The samples he took could have missed the damage, which is easy to do.   19. With a company like Kraft that clearly lists any gluten, there's no need to check a gluten-free food list. All you have to do is read the ingredients. richard

  23. I haven't called about Claritin myself because I don't use it, but the ingredients clearly say "corn starch." If I were you, I'd call the company or e-mail them and see what they say Some people see the CYA statement and automatically assume a product definitely has gluten. This is far from the case. richard

  25. This is a standard CYA statement and really means almost nothing. Very few manufacturers actually test for gluten. What they have told you is that gluten isn't part of the formula and in reality that's all you were asking. Almost nobody guarantees or even can guarantee there will never be cross contamination among suppliers. I would take it. richard
