ARCHIVED Rash Is Getting Worse With Gluten-Free Diet
lovegrov replied to trakaye's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I am not a doctor and cannot see your rash, but what you describe sounds nothing at all like the DH I had. IMO, you need to see a dermatologist who knows about DH, not a naturopath. And others are right, it's actually highly unusual for DH to get better or disappear right away. It can disappear quickly on dapsone, but takes weeks and months on the gluten... -
ARCHIVED How To Notify Family
lovegrov replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If your family is like most there are folks who won't really accept it and certainly wouldn't be tested if you don't have an official diagnosis. My family got tested because I was SOOO ill and because I was highly positive. I was never much concerned which side of the family it came from, though. richard -
Basically the regular Hormel chili with beans is gluten-free but the others are not. richard

Glad you feel good AND that you took this step, but I hope you also learned that you HAVE to question everything. And the server absolutely must check with the kitchen. I don't like doing it, either, but it's necessary. richard

ARCHIVED Salami Have Gluten
lovegrov replied to cameron's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'd eat it. richard -
My psoriasis started AFTER I went gluten-free. richard

I absolutely agree with getting away from the bread/toast jobs because there's just no way to avid inadvertent gluten, but you definitely were not absorbing bread or toast through your pores or skin. It's simply not possible. richard

ARCHIVED How Long Until Dh Improvement?
lovegrov replied to Katrala's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
What she said. Mine went away almost immediately but that appears to be highly unusual. Weeks to months to even more than a year is more normal. richard -
ARCHIVED Caramel In Robitussin Products
lovegrov replied to Beth P.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Caramel is not a gluten concern. bit I n't say why it would bother you. I also don't worry about drug companies when they hedge about a product. If they tell me the formula is not supposed to contain gluten, that's pretty much all I need to know. I don't pay attention to their CYA. Where did you see about 3 new Robitussin products with gluten? Which ones... -
ARCHIVED Does Msg Contain Gluten?
lovegrov replied to Celiacnewbie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My mother once fervently believed that she was allergic or sensitive to MSG. She eventually realized that she had been getting MSG without realizing it and without reacting and that her paranoia about it was based on nothing. She now doesn't worry about it and at age 80 is fine. richard -
ARCHIVED Outback Steakhouse
lovegrov replied to viviendoparajesus's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
You should talk to folks at other places. The VAST majority of BBQ I've found has been gluten-free. richard -
ARCHIVED Beer ?
lovegrov replied to fourlisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Redbridge is gluten-free so it shouldn't be gluten causing the problem. Even if there's a small amount of contamination, it would be so incredibly tiny there's be now way in heck to measure it. I've had Redbridge, New Grist, Bards and Greens with no problem. Also had hard cider. richard -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free And My Eczema Is Back?
lovegrov replied to Duhlina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I didn't develop psoriasis until AFTER I went gluten-free. richard -
I know that doctors aren't always helpful, but if you haven't seen yours with these returning symptoms, you should. These are some serious symptoms that might not even be related to what you're eating. richard

There's a difference between a topical allergic reaction and celiac or DH. I don't think anyone would deny that someone who is allergic can have a reaction to touching wheat. I had DH for 20 years before I was diagnosed with celiac. Blisters, itching, the whole thing. I have absolutely no reaction whatsoever to touching gluten, although I do it as little...

ARCHIVED Hotel Mini-Fridge - Cold Enough For Meat?
lovegrov replied to sreese68's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Usually you can turn those things up high enough to nearly freeze stuff. They can get just as cold as full-size ones, although just like full size ones you can get ones that don't work as well. But if you're still worried, partial freezing can work, as well. richard -
ARCHIVED Looking For Support Group In Lynchbug, Va.
lovegrov replied to VydorScope's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Somebody might know more than I about Lynchburg, but in most places both Kroger and Walmart have added more gluten-free foods since this thread started four years ago. Also check out any organic places. A gluten-free store near Forest, Earth Munchies, didn't make it and closed in July. Close to there on U.S. 221, there's a place that has gluten-free pizza... -
ARCHIVED Oh The Sadness Of Halloween...
lovegrov replied to chrissyinnj's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Plenty of candies are gluten-free. No reason to be sad. richard -
ARCHIVED Two Family Members Becoming Sick Incl. Sister's Baby
lovegrov replied to CNV2855's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wouldn't automatically suspect celiac simply because a child has eczema, especially if the mother doesn't have it. As for testing, not reliable for a child that young. richard -
I'm sorry, folks, but I mean, really? Don't we already have enough to fret about with celiac and CC and other food intolerances without bringing up some off-the-wall allergy? richard

ARCHIVED If I Cheat On My Gluten Free Diet, Could I Be More Likely To Get Type 1 Diabetes?
lovegrov replied to alicewa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Without reading any of the literature or researching it, my understanding is that people with Type I are more likely than most to have celiac, not that you're more likely to develop Type I if you have celiac. Glad you told your fiance. richard -
ARCHIVED Anyone Relieved Of Celiac?
lovegrov replied to alicewa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's bull. Richard -
I'm going to have to agree that for virtually everyone with celiac, distilled vinegars and canola on a grill is just not something to worry about. I would use the grill -- and I did use our grill -- after a cleaning. richard
-
ARCHIVED Living Off On Canned Foods, Is It Safe?
lovegrov replied to George Knighton's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What a miserable way to eat. Why would you want to do that when there are so many safe things to have? richard -
ARCHIVED Exact Opposite Reaction To Meds?
lovegrov replied to Duhlina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I know folks without celiac who have the same thing with Nyqui and Benadryl. And some folks simply have a high resistance to pain meds. Pretty hard to pin it on celiac. richard
