    ARCHIVED Inhaling Flour

While I have always has a hard time believing that walking down a bread aisle can cause a celiac-type reaction, an allergic reaction, if that's what you have, is a different beast. And any place with lots of flour in the air and on surfaces is bad for anybody with celiac or a wheat allergy. I would not want to work in a bakery. richard
  2. Come on, the wine thing has been destroyed over and over. And cap6, for the average person, all of this is complete overkill. I can assure you that 99.9999 percent of people with celiac do not and do not have to call farmers to find out how they plant or harvest anything and the vast majority don't soak their produce for 10 minutes or apply a baking soda...
  3. Yes, you can. That was one of my symptoms that went away completely when I went gluten-free. richard
  4. Also true but I haven't used a house ball in so many years I hadn't thought of that. I also generally don't eat when I bowl because I don't want stuff on my hands.
  5. Agree with Peter. In the U.S. ketchup is pretty much gluten-free, but foods have different ingredients in other countries. Canadian worcestershire sauce has gluten; it doesn't in the U.S. richard
  6. I've always found yeast extract to be gluten-free. richard
  7. How long have you been gluten-free? It could take months and months and months to undo the damage. Heck, my wife doesn't even have celiac to recover from and it took us 8 months to conceive our first child. richard
  8. Come on now, I bowl in league every week and the house I go to is quite clean. I wouldn't bowl there otherwise. The place I go to doesn't serve pizza but most of its food is indeed off limits for us. I have my own ball (three of them, actually) that nobody else uses so that's not a problem. The only solution I know of for a person who does not have his...
  9. Poppi, I'm no doctor, but I've seen 5 people with DH, including my father and myself, and the DH of all those folks looked nothing at all like this. Obviously that doesn't mean that it absolutely isn't DH, but it sure is different than what I had. richard
  10. For some folks it takes months and months. Make sure you also avoid major sources of iodine, like table salt and certain seafoods. richard
  11. Peter is right. A local Japanese restaurant went to all gluten-free soy sauce once without telling folks, and the owner immediately started getting complaints that their food didn't taste the same and wasn't as good. This was from regular customers who has no idea the soy sauce had been changed. The owner and the chef both think San J gluten-free tamari is...
  12. All the experts say that ALL first-degree relatives of somebody with celiac should have the blood test for the disease. Whether you have symptoms or not. richard
  13. I didn't develop psoriasis until AFTER I went gluten-free. Before that I definitely had DH, though, and it's gone. richard
  14. Slurpees are just one of those things that are EXTREMELY unlikely to have gluten. And, as we've seen, in the U.S they don't. richard
  15. I have no link. This was from calling companies when I used to do more of that but I THINK it was one of the larger poultry companies. The rosemary was not clearly listed. richard
  16. I think your nutritionist is laboring under old information. We used to be warned that all "injected" meat or meat with a broth was dangerous. Since them we've learned that nearly all of it is safe. Here, for instance, is what Perdue says: "Perdue chickens, chicken parts, and turkeys are all gluten-free. These are sold fresh as well as frozen and some...
  17. I WILL eat certain samples. Some samples come straight from a bag or container and the stuff is obviously gluten-free or something that I know is gluten-free. Cheese if there's no crackers around. If the person is cooking something like sausage or bacon in a regular pan and there's no gluten product around, yep, I'll eat it. Yes, I know, I'm trusting they...
  18. In the 10 years since I was diagnosed, Kozy Shack has always been one of the companies people with celiac have trusted. I can't remember ever hearing CC complaints. I'd recommend it without hesitation. richard
  19. I thought this thread was about Slurpees? richard
  20. I seriously doubt you're having a gluten reaction. richard
  21. Canola is absolutely gluten-free. All cooking oils are gluten-free unless something's been added, as in the Pam baker's spray. richard
  22. What are the laws concerning listing gluten in South Africa? In the U.S. we're just happy to discover that a company will list any gluten since by law all they HAVE to list is wheat. richard
  23. I've never, ever found a chicken "injected" with a wheat solution. Pretty much all of the main national brands have said their plain chickens are gluten-free. richard
  24. Never found a smoked salmon that has gluten but don't know this exact brand. What are the ingredients? richard
  25. Hardee's does NOT cook its fries in a dedicated fryer (or they didn't use to) so their fries are definitely NOT gluten-free. richard
