ARCHIVED Trying To Figure Things Out....
celiacgirls replied to mama.laura's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think if you want to test the gluten free diet, you need to be very strict. A few years ago, I tried it but didn't worry about hidden, trace amounts of gluten. I didn't feel any different and didn't notice any change when I added it back in. This time, when I started the diet, I was able to be completely gluten free and I could tell within 2 days that... -
ARCHIVED Shool Lunches?
celiacgirls replied to TygerCubs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter takes Tyson chicken legs, shrimp, or lunch meat (usually without bread) which can be eaten cold. She also takes pizza and hamburgers but she can use a microwave. To go with that, she takes the usual school lunch items like chips, cookies, veggies, and popcorn. Sometimes she takes Pamela's bread mix made into rolls or mini loaves. Even her... -
ARCHIVED Day Two gluten-free
celiacgirls replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've read a lot of your posts so I know one thing you are hoping for is your depression symptoms to go away as well as your GI symptoms. I never had GI symptoms so I can't really address that but I did have depression, fatigue, brain fog, etc. I do want to encourage you to be as strict as you possibly can for your 6 month trial or else you may not really... -
ARCHIVED What Do You All Think?
celiacgirls replied to cjblack's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome! You will find a lot of information here. I suggest you try him on the gluten free diet after the scope regardless of the results. It's possible for the biopsy to be negative but still have at least a gluten intolerance. My daughter was never scoped but did have numerous negative blood tests. She has a positive dietary response to gluten... -
I was on an antidepressant pre-gluten-free. It was helpful but I feel even better now that I'm gluten-free. Within 2 days of the gluten-free diet, I felt giddy from the a/d so I got off from it. Now my depression symptoms return if I've had some gluten but I think if I stayed on the a/d, most of the time, it would be too much. My solution is to be very...

ARCHIVED Symptoms/endoscopy/opinions...
celiacgirls replied to geminigal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'd say go ahead and try the diet. It won't hurt you to go gluten free and it may help. There are lots of people here who had a negative biopsy and improved on the diet. My children and I have never had a biopsy and all of us are gluten free and better off than we were before. My mother did have a biopsy which was negative but she is mostly gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Can Someone List Gluten Free Liquors And Mixes?
celiacgirls replied to CantEvenEatRice's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
All Stirrings mixers are gluten-free. I got them at World Market. I hear they are available at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. On the Border frozen margarita mix is gluten-free. I got this at Bed, Bath, and Beyond or Linens and Things. -
ARCHIVED How Much Does It Take To Get A Reaction?
celiacgirls replied to AZ Gal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can't say for you but I know I had symptoms for 2 1/2 weeks from what had to be cc from some french fries. I ordered them from a drive thru and they were supposed to be gluten free in a dedicated fryer. It was the only questionable thing I ate and my stomach hurt afterwards. The next day I woke up with depression and fatigue which lasted 2 1/2 weeks... -
ARCHIVED Dangerous Grains.....
celiacgirls replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I tried the diet after being positive on Enterolab's test. I tested myself when my daughter was positive. I would have said I had no symptoms but within 2 days, I didn't need my a/d. I felt giddy and knew I needed to get off from it. Of course I had to taper but within probably a month, I was completely off and haven't gone back. When I am glutened... -
Could he have a problem with soy? We've discovered my daughter has a problem with soy as well as gluten and casein. I kept thinking she was being cc'd but finally realized there was soy involved in many cases. The dairy free ice cream and the frosting probably both had soy unless you purposely eliminated it.

ARCHIVED 2 Yr Old Son Possible Celiac
celiacgirls replied to KatieKates's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree you should try the diet after all the testing is done whatever the results are. My younger daughter had symptoms which were never confirmed to be celiac by the traditional testing but the symptoms have gone away now that she is gluten-free. Diet response is really the best indication of a problem with gluten whether it is "only" gluten intolerance... -
ARCHIVED I'm Having A Really Rough Time
celiacgirls replied to Nantzie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't have any advice but I'll commiserate. I hate figuring out what we are going to eat more than I hate making it. It's hard to please myself, a picky eater, a vegetarian, and my husband and all eat the same thing or even close to it. My oldest daughter is old enough that if she doesn't like what we are eating I let her make something else. She will... -
ARCHIVED Dairy Free Cream Caramel
celiacgirls replied to Japsnoet's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This looks good. I am going to try to make it. Thanks for posting it. -
ARCHIVED Can The Lab That Runs The Bloodwork Make A Difference
celiacgirls replied to cyan1117's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree you should just try the diet. My younger daughter had mild symptoms her whole life but her blood tests were always negative and the doctors said it wasn't celiac. 7 years later, I did the Enterolab test which confirmed gluten was a problem for her. I knew she did better on the diet but let myself be convinced by others that she didn't have it and... -
ARCHIVED New To This, But Not *official*
celiacgirls replied to Anonymousgurl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is not uncommon. None of us were officially dx'ed. Only my daughter has even had the blood tests and they were always negative. She is the only one who had GI symptoms. The rest of us have done Enterolab testing and gone gluten free from that. I think it is a good thing because it is not on our insurance records. You don't have to have a doctor... -
ARCHIVED Meringue Powder
celiacgirls replied to purplemom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have bought pasteurized egg whites at the grocery store to use for frosting. I think Wilton makes a powdered egg white but I am not sure if it is gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Need Great Cake Res. For 5yr Old Bday~
celiacgirls replied to jen2be2's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
"Cause You're Special cake mixes are very good if you can find them. I have found them in 2 health food stores and ordered them online. I've only tried the Namaste spice cake but they make chocolate and white cake mixes, too. The spice cake was very good but maybe not a good 5 year old birthday cake. I've seen those at Whole Foods and maybe the regular... -
ARCHIVED Headache Medication Needed
celiacgirls replied to bklyn's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I take 3 Advil for my headaches. The recommended dose of 1 - 2 does nothing for them. It doesn't bother my stomach but I'm not sure if it's easy on the stomach. -
ARCHIVED Can't Drink Wine Anymore?
celiacgirls replied to kristend's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Are you possibly casein intolerant, too? Apparently some wines use casein in the filtering process. I've noticed I might be reacting more to wine also so I've tried drinking vegan wine which does not use casein. So far, I think it might be working for me. The only one I have found so far is Frey's organic wine at Whole Foods. -
ARCHIVED New - Is It Worth It?
celiacgirls replied to DownWithGluten's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think it does contribute to depression. I don't think I was ever dx'ed with depression but I did get an antidepressant for PTSD when my daughter was hurt. When I got on that, I could tell that I had been irritable and anxious my whole life. I was also always tired and didn't really want to do anything. I stayed on the a/d for about 18 months. Then... -
Also, if you follow the gluten free diet, your risk of cancer returns to normal and I think your risk of developing other auto-immune diseases decreases also.
-
Even though I had been suspecting my daughter of having celiac for 7 years before she was dx'ed gluten intolerant by Enterolab, it was still a shock. And then I was shocked again to find out I had it, too. You may notice that you feel better in general after you stop eating gluten. And you may start having symptoms when you do have gluten once you have...

ARCHIVED Neurological Disorders Associated With Celiac?
celiacgirls replied to cyan1117's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think there is a link. My daughter wasn't dx'ed with bipolar but she was diagnosed Oppositional Defiance Disorder and Depression. Her therapist and I thought she was on her way years down the road to being dx'ed bipolar. She was taking Lexapro and we were thinking we would need to change to or add a mood stabilizer. It was so bad in our house I was... -
ARCHIVED Parve Chocolate Chip Cookies
celiacgirls replied to cycler's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
They look ok to me unless it says "may contain traces of milk". Maybe since they are parve, by definition, there are no traces, I'm not sure. For gluten, there aren't any suspicious ingredients. -
ARCHIVED Test Results From Enterolab
celiacgirls replied to Nic's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My doctor uses Prometheus or Enterolab for genetic testing. His PA told me that it doesn't really matter which one you use but that Enterolab identifies all of the genes and subtypes and Prometheus just tells you if you have the celiac genes. DQ 1 is not identified by Prometheus but, from what I read here, is accepted as a gene associated with neurological...
