  1. I am on the Vivelle dot. It is a patch of just estrogen. I switched to it from Premarin after going gluten-free.
  2. I did the Enterolab testing because it would tell me if I had the DQ1 gene as well as the DQ2 and DQ8. I believe DQ1 is recognized by some neurologists as being linked to neurological problems due to gluten. I also did want to know the likelihood of getting "official" celiac disease. Since you already know there is some genetic link in your family...
  3. It does seem that most people will be diagnosed with a gluten problem by Enterolab. My personal opinion is that most people probably do have somewhat of a problem with gluten. I think for you to know if it is worth giving up gluten and casein for you, you need to be very strict for a while. Otherwise you will never know how good you can feel. ...

    ARCHIVED Looking For New Doctor

If you have already tested with Enterolab, you can e-mail them to ask if there are any doctors in your area who use Enterolab. I found my doctor that way. I think I am probably classified as only gluten intolerant by him. He ordered a bone density scan and some blood tests to check for nutrient levels as well as the gene test to see if I was more or...
  5. I've been on the diet for about 10 months now. I was taking an a/d for about 18 months before that. I could tell in 2 days that I didn't need my a/d any more. I felt giddy, not in a good way. I tapered off pretty quickly with no bad side effects. I did get a little dizziness when I tried to do it too fast. My daughter is also on an a/d. She has been...
  6. I don't think you are missing anything. I don't get why they think it is so harmful to not eat gluten! My kids are not "properly diagnosed" either. I don't think the pedi GI would believe me but I haven't been back to try to convince her. Since they wrote you a letter advising you to see a nutritionist, you might consider having a nutritionist...
  7. I think you do have to be pretty concerned about cc. I say this as someone who didn't think I had any symptoms to gluten when I started and thought I surely wouldn't notice a few crumbs in my food. All of my glutenings since then have been from cc, probably even less than a few crumbs. My kitchen is mostly gluten-free. If I wiped crumbs with gluten...
  8. My kids were older when they went gluten-free so I've never had to deal with it at that age. I did just recently see my 9 year old daughter sharing food at lunch. She knew not to eat their food but they were putting their hands in her cookies while eating pizza! Then, another day, they were giving her gluten-free potato chips but while they were eating...
  9. I avoid anything that says "may contain traces of ...". For me, I might take a chance with casein or soy but I wouldn't let my kids because they react to tiny amounts. I used to buy the ones that said "manufactured in a facility that uses ..." but I have noticed my children have reacted to some of those. For now, I will avoid the ones they have reacted...
  10. Wildwood Cafe in Austin is a gluten free bakery that looks like it will ship cakes. Their carrot cake is delicious. I think even people who eat gluten will like it. I'm not sure about the other ones but everything I've had there has been good. Open Original Shared Link
  11. Fleischman's Light margarine is gluten/casein/soy free. I'm pretty sure Fleischman's unsalted sticks of margarine are gluten/casein free. I used to buy that but now we avoid soy so I can't. I use that margarine, coconut oil, and olive oil depending on what I'm using it for. I also use shortening instead of butter in cookies.
  12. I've also been using the Wilton recipe lately. It is so good! I use 1 cup of shortening instead of half butter. For chocolate, you can add 3/4 cup cocoa and 1 - 2 T of water. Add extra water to thin to the right consistency. You can also add a pinch of salt to cut the sweetness a little.
  13. You know you feel better when you don't eat gluten so obviously you need to avoid it. Enterolab believes their test catches it before it is bad enough to show up in a blood test. To me, it seems that this must be the case. I know there are skeptics about Enterolab but to me it makes sense. My own daughter tested negative on the blood tests (very...
  14. Per the celiac listserve: Do you know what brand you have? I have printed out a list of gluten-free medicines to take with me to the doctor if I anticipate the need for a prescription. Then I try to get the prescription written for brand name only. Other times, I have asked the pharmacy to make sure it is gluten-free and then looked at the manufacturer...
  15. This is the one I use the most also. The rolls are very good. The recipe is on the bag. Even my daughter's gluten-eating friends like the rolls.
  16. I tested myself after my daughter tested positive there. My daughter did have GI symptoms but was always negative on the regular blood tests. I would have said I had no symptoms but I knew that you could have celiac disease and not know it. They didn't diagnose me with celiac disease but gluten intolerance. At first, my plan was to follow the diet when...
  17. deleted - double post.
  18. I have done lots of testing with Enterolab. While I agree that you can determine a lot of what you find out from them by a diet trial, I don't think I wasted my money. I would never have eliminated gluten myself without a positive result from them because I never suspected I had a problem with gluten. It turns out my depression, anxiety, and irritability...
  19. I think some people are able to eat soy lecithin. I think, theorectically, the soy protein has been removed. However, my daughter reacts even to soy lecithin with a tummy ache. That stuff is in almost all chocolate.
  20. I went on a cruise with them last summer and they seemed trustworthy. We only ate in the main dining room. I did not trust the buffet. You will have the same waiter every night so you won't have to explain it every night. We ordered the night before for the next dinner so that they could prepare ours without gluten. We didn't have any problems.
  21. Skittles and Starburst are gluten-free. Cape Cod chips are gluten-free.

    ARCHIVED Houston

I don't live in Houston but I researched some restaurants last summer for a family gathering. We had a group of 15 with 6 people on the gluten-free diet. 4 of us were also dairy free. We went to the Rainbow Lodge and they were very accommodating. The person I talked to on the phone had a celiac sister. We had brunch there but I would go there again...
  23. I have an 11 year old daughter who tested positive from Enterolab and didn't have any GI symptoms. She was about 75% on the height chart, lower on the weight chart. She started off 99%+. I always wondered about her going down on the growth chart but she had terrible eating habits so I thought that was it. Of course, the doctors saw no reason for concern...
  24. I think it would be fine. I have frozen frosted cupcakes which are ok when thawed.
  25. Happy Anniversary! I like to make the Namaste chocolate cake mix. They carry it at my regular grocery store and at Whole Foods. I haven't found a recipe from scratch yet that is as good.
