Hi Everyone!

This is my first post. I was diagnosed last month and I have been researching and reading like crazy. I have been reading these posts for weeks and decided it was time to participate. My question is this.... Is it necessary to use gluten free shampoo, makeup, cleaners, etc?? Or is this just a precaution. Has there been research done on this and if so where should I look? Look forward to chatting :)

Welcome to the board Carly! Glad you're with us.

I can not point you to proven research regarding gluten ingestion through the skin. However, most people on this forum believe it does make a difference to try and get all the gluten out of their lives. However, I can tell you that my doctor told me to use topical progesterone cream for homonal balance. It's made a huge difference for me (I'm in a much better mood now) so I'd say since so many women get relief from topical creams, they must be obsorbed through the skin pretty well. Does reg. lotion and such do the same? I have no idea but I'm not going to take any chances. Why go on a diet where you have to stop eating many things you love only to possibly keep making yourself sick with non food items that are not gluten free? Remember to check your meds/vitamins as well.

Others will surely share their experiences about getting 'glutened' by non food things. I'd say some are more affected by them than others. As always, everyone reacts differently but I'd say it's better to be safe than sorry. Good luck to you!

I agree with floridanative too. Not wanting to take any risks, and knowing their are so many products out there that are gluten-free, I decided to switch out all of my products. Wheat was in so many of my hair/makeup type products, I was shocked, and did want anything to do with them!

Carly,

Let me add my welcome, also!

I too watched the posts for weeks before doing one.

I can't say it any better than floridanative.

After 20 weeks gluten-free I still notice that if I get eat something in error that wasn't ok-- I itch. I didn't know why I was itching before going gluten-free. For me, shampoo and esp things on my lips REALLY CAUSE ME PROBLEMS NOW. I really have learned alot from the board and now call companies for these items. You can go back and do a search for savonnerie. There have been so many posts re: the items you are concerned with. I think this one will help for a start.

Good luck, it gets easier once you find what works for you.

Carly, i agree with everything that was said, but just wanted to add that this. i dont have any skin rxns to gluten, but i use my hands to apply things like shampoo, makeup, lotions, etc. So if i then eat something, i dont want to accidentally ingest gluten, in any amount. So i personally dont use any products that contain gluten and i find there are enough that dont so its not really a problem!

creid-- it WILL get easier--promise! the first go away is definitely the hardest. after that, its just maintaining. anything you're struggling with right now especially?

PS--I pasted a list of the products I use below to help give you ideas. This year I switched over to more natural products, which you may or may not be interested in, but just in case, ck out below!

I definitely recommend Aubrey Organic products (fav is the Rosa Mosqueta shampoo). Just be sure to ck ingredients, I think most of the shampoos are gluten-free, but not the conditioners. They have lotions too. Open Original Shared LinkOpen Original Shared Link

For body washes, shampoo, bubble bath, sunscreen, conditioner, face lotion--another good line is california baby. Open Original Shared Link

For lotions I use a few from Burt's bees (ck their gluten-free list) or Tropical Traditions. Open Original Shared Link

For my face wash, face lotion etc I use Juice Beauty. www.juicebeauty.com or www.sephora.com

For chapstick and skin balm I use badger products--all are gluten-free. Open Original Shared Link

For nail polish I use honeybee gardens: Open Original Shared Link

For deoderant, floss and toothpaste I use Tom's of Maine. See their gluten-free product list online. Their orange flavored toothpastes are not gluten-free. Open Original Shared Link

For makeup I use Bare Escentuals. I buy from www.sephora.com

Hi Carly and welcome :) --I agree with everyone that it is important to keep your personal products gluten free. My personal opinion on whether gluten can be absorbed through the skin is that if certain medicines can work by using a patch or cream on the skin then I would rather be safe and not chance it (I believe Floridanative already said the same thing, but I think so too  ). I do know that I was glutened early on by my wheat containing hair gel as I bit my nail. Jenvan's list is a great one--lots of ideas there. I have been using shampoo, conditioner and soap from The Gluten Free Savonnerie--www.gfsoap.com. As you search the boards, you'll find a lot of info. It does get a lot easier as time goes on.

I've seen lots of posts about organic and all-natural products. Does anyone have ideas for cheap and synthetic? I am mainly concerned about makeup products (store brands-it'll be expensive enough to buy all new makeup!). Does anyone use Cover Girl pressed powder?

Welcome to the board! I do not know of any research regarding gluten and the skin. However, I can tell you about my experience. Then you can deceide for yourself what is best based on all the posts.

I had been gluten-free for several months and was not getting better. It was then that I started researching and realized gluten was in everyday things (lipstick, nail polish, lotion). I decided that since I was not ingesting the items (minus the lipstick) that I could not be getting sick. Then one day I licked some food off my finger. I could still taste my lotion! Within two hours I was sick. Turns out the lotion had gluten. That is when I decided to get rid of those items and find gluten-free ones. It was just one less thing I had to worry about.

I am happy to report that I am feeling better. Read posts here, think about your habits, then make a choice that makes sense to you.

I don't know about gluten getting absorbed into the skin but it can definately get on your hands and into your mouth if your products arent gluten-free. I was using Aubrey Organics lotion and got REALLY sick. It had wheat germ oil in it and it was getting all over my food and who knows how many times I was licking my fingers. I lost weight in the short time I was using the lotion and it took me several weeks to feel better. :(

Doesn't Delphi say to be careful with Nutragena because the Swiss have different standards for Gluten? I just got Tropical Traditions Citrus Body Cream and it is great ( Doesn't give me a rash like Burts Bees Did). Clean and Clear is all gluten-free and you can read their written response as well as over a hundred other companies from the last 5 weeks in varios postings of mine under headings of "product info" or "product updates".

I think products that are designed to be absorbed through your skin are specially formulated to make them absorbable - your skin is a really effective barrier to the outside world. Some ingredients are just irritating to the skin for some people. The major problem in celiac disease/gluten intolerance is getting these products in your mouth. When you become aware of how often you touch your mouth it seems right to avoid products with gluten in them.

Best wishes,

Matilda

Hi Matilda.

I got your PM and here is the thread. Your so RIGHT about what you said to me. I didn't mis-understand you, guess i just wanted some sympathy for my hair dye situation. You said it was a common reaction..that helps me as I DIDN'T KNOW THAT. Maybe people who aren't celiac disease even get the reaction, right?

I kept thinking that when I got healthier maybe i could keep dying my hair...maybe not...any thoughts???

Thanks so much for you info...I'm open to anything at this point. Maybe when I'm gluten by accident, my skin itches and THEN I really have to be careful with the lotion i put on. Using the salvonnerie products now becasue i learned about it here and it has really helped and use it ALL THE TIME now.

thanks again for your time and expertice....Judy

Hi Judy,

No claims to expertise here. :) We were just talking about how not every skin reaction is gluten related, although I think when your immune system's gone haywire other reactions might be more common.

Here's a little snippet about reactions to hair dye from the fda:

Open Original Shared Link

Hair Dye Reactions

As with hair relaxers, some consumers have reported hair loss, burning, redness, and irritation from hair dyes. Allergic reactions to dyes include itching, swelling of the face, and even difficulty breathing....

.... the law does not allow FDA to take action against coal tar hair dyes that are shown to be harmful, if the product is labeled with the prescribed caution statement indicating that the product may cause irritation in certain individuals, that a patch test for skin sensitivity should be done, and that the product must not be used for dyeing the eyelashes or eyebrows. The patch test involves putting a dab of hair dye behind the ear or inside the elbow, leaving it there for two days, and looking for itching, burning, redness, or other reactions.

"The problem is that people can become sensitized--that is, develop an allergy--to these ingredients," Lambert says. "They may do the patch test once, and then use the product for 10 years" before having an allergic reaction. "But you're supposed to do the patch test every time," he says, even in salons."

There's masses on google about hair dye reactions.

Going back to absorbing products through your skin, my husband was just telling me that in the days when cocaine was cheap and legal, people used to sprinkle it in their shoes before going dancing. When their feet got hot and sweaty they would absorb it and get extra energy. Cocaine is one of the few things absorbed through the skin apparently!

Best wishes,

Matilda

Wow thanks Matilda--I didn't know how to go to the website for this.

My hairdresser gave me the co name to contact but just havent'gotten to it yet.

Alot to think about whether Yes or No ....

Always helps to have the info to make the decision on.

appreciate all the time it took to send me this info.

Your the best.

Checkouts gluten-free recipes at twww.redstaryeast.com We tried a bread machine years ago and weren’t happy with results. Bread machines have pre-set rise & bake times.  Unfortunately, the program doesn’t adjust to slight differences when measuring, relative humidity or temperature of ingredients & in kitchens.  Lots of efforts for ONE odd- sized loaf that hard to cut into useable slices.  College-aged son found best use for bread machine was as heavy duty mixer that ‘kept dust in the box.’  He would pre-measure ingredients for 2-3 loaves & use machine mix up individual batches.      Since gluten-free bread needs  to rise only once, each recipe of dough went into a loaf pan. Pans sat counter to rise—time dependent of temp in kitchen. Then, baked in oven until he, not machine, decided it was done.     Took ~10 min extra up front to measure & mix additions but adds nothing to rise & bake times.     Loaves are great for slicing (Slice extra before freezing!). One mess to clean up, saves time & energy since you need to bake  as is half as often (If  you plan to bake lots more than bread, opt for KitchenAid/ heavy duty mixer instead.  Cover with dish towel to capture dust!)     Personally, I’m sure I had as a kid since I’ve never been a fan  of bread. .  Have been wrapping corn tortillas around things for 40+ years.  Can still get a dozen 12-pks of tortillas for same or less than price as 1 load of gluten-free bread. PLUS. the tortillas have more nutrients!

Welcome to the forum. You are lucky because in Korean food, many classic meals such as bibimbap without sauce, barbecue meats and some kinds of soups generally do not have gluten. But it is a good idea to confirm with the restaurant workers for safety reasons. Regarding certain locations, I enjoy going to places such as Plant in Seoul and Sprout in Busan. Moreover, using applications like HappyCow or TripAdvisor can assist you to discover additional choices in the regions you plan to visit. One big tip: it is good to know some important Korean sentences, for example 'I cannot eat gluten' (geulluteuneul meogeul su eopseoyo)  or 'Does this have gluten?' (igeoe neun geulluteuni deureo innayo?) because they can be very helpful. If you are considering getting a local guide, I'd suggest this one https://gowithguide.com/korea They were very helpful when I needed to find places with gluten-free food options because they provide tours tailored to your preferences. Good luck with your travels! 🍻

It is concerning.  Unfortunately a lot of doctors don’t know a lot about celiac disease, even some gastroenterologists.  Here is an article for you: Celiac disease and miscarriage I hope you have a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby!
    • Katiec123
@RMJ   this is really concerning and my GP has said none of this to me!
    • RMJ
Undiagnosed (and thus untreated) celiac disease is associated with a higher chance of miscarriage. The downside of continuing to eat gluten now is increased chance of miscarriage. The downside of stopping gluten now and having to restart later to get a clear, official diagnosis is that you might have worse symptoms eating gluten after being gluten free, but it wouldn’t affect your baby. I know which one I would choose!
