Gluten In Envelopes

I've licked two envelopes this past week and have been having some problems. What are the chances of gluten being in the glue?

I certainly can't say the chances are zero, but they are very, very slim.

hi i was told by my celiac support group that envolopes do have gluten in the glue and not to lick them and i have noticed when i do lick them by accident i have a reaction to it

I stopped licking envelopes when I read the medical article about the person who got the tinest paper cut when licking an envelope and there were eggs on the glue and an insect of some sort (roach??) started growing in his lip!! Blech!!

It is my understanding that the different paper companies will buy whatever adhesive is the cheapest. To me, that means that you never know--I never lick envelopes anymore. Either my husband does it, or I use a damp paper towel.

This one has been researched by more than one person. No U.S. manufacturer uses wheat glue (even if they DID just use the cheapest thing, that's not wheat). I don't think anybody's researched every foreign manufacturer, but this one is considered almost a celiac urban legend. A search of the St. John's list will turn up responses confirming this.

While gluten in envelope glue is very unlikely, but most manufacturers suggest that everybody use a wet sponge instead of licking.

I bought one of those sponge stamp thingies... I won't lick it anyway, nasty stuff...

I used tape until I was able to replace all the envelopes I use at home AND at work with the ones that have the peel and stick. I also don't lick stamps - only sticker style will do.

On the "Seinfeld" show George's fiance, Susan, died suddenly from licking the glue on the cheap envelopes that he (George) bought for their wedding invitations. I never expected, when I first saw that episode, that I would someday avoid licking evelopes and stamps due to health concerns!

celiachap--I thought the same thing! :D My husband and I love the Seinfeld reruns.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
