Newly diagnosed and desperate for some pain management suggestions

Hi all! I just got the results of my biopsy and I officially truly belong on this forum. I'm celiac. Not sure how much information is relevant, I'm 28 years old, female, didn't feel any symptoms until about 3 years ago and don't seem to react immediately to eating gluten which is why it took so long to consider celiac as a cause.

I needed to gluten up for the tests to be effective and I'm struggling a lot with pain. It's not so bad on a daily level but it comes and goes in waves, and tonight I'm in a particularly bad spot with the pain and desperate for suggestions. My doctor said don't take pepto bismol, and so did a friend who's celiac. I think something about needing to let the symptoms run their course or something? I'm not sure, but if anyone here has some pro tips on reducing the pain I could really use the help. (Can I take T3s for this? Advil? Pepto? I'll even take a placebo at this point as long as it works!)

It's so frustrating to google for information because all the sites just say "strict gluten free diet!" Thanks for the advice but let's get real. Sometimes we're gonna react to stuff and it would be nice to have some tools to help with it.

Currently sipping on some turmeric tea, thank you in advance to any advice.

Screw your Dr. in this particular case IMHO.   Take the Pepto, and take some aspirin or some wine if it helps.  Also, lots of water, and soothing, easy to digest foods.  Peppermint Altoids or peppermint tea can help with stomach gas and pain.

Hi Ali,

Welcome to the forum. No on the Advil. Your friend and Doctor are correct that it needs to run its course. Mostly what helps my 24yr old Celiac daughter is her heating pad and lots of fluids. Water or tea and throw in a Gatorade or something similar. You will be basically flushing it out of your system.  If you can get up and move around maybe take a short walk just to distract you for a bit. Others might have some different remedies for you and if you haven’t already, check out the newbies thread. Hang in there as unfortunately this won’t be the last time you will be this miserable. Gluten has a tendency of sneaking in your life when you least expect it. Over time you will find out what helps you the best as everyone’s symptoms are different but this site if full of amazing people who can empathize and offer much love and support.

hmm pepto has routinely bee recommended here.  it is not going to interfere with the disease process... just be aware that your stool will be black.

Thank you all for your help! I'll give the various suggestions a go and figure out what works best for me.

Yes, it needs to run it's course. It will run it's course no matter what you do but there is no reason you must suffer any more than you have to. Until today, on this thread, I have not heard anyone ever say do not take Advil. The only reason not to take it is if Advil has a history of upsetting your tummy. That & I believe (but haven't checked lately) the gel Advil contains gluten. Just make sure whatever you're taking is gluten free. There is no reason you can't take Pepto Bismol. Do drink lots of water to help flush your system. Eat soft foods that will be easy to digest.

There reasons other than gluten not to take Advil.  This thread has some links to info on kidney damage and ibuprofen.  It is always a good idea to check on possible side affects, even with commonly used medicines.

This why I said no to Advil. My daughter is Celiac and was taking Advil for pain when I stumbled across this and she switched to Tylenol.

I am allergic to gluten. Is it all right for me to take Advil® products?

Gluten is not added to any Advil® product during the manufacturing process. However, we cannot guarantee that minute amounts of gluten or gluten derivatives are not contained in raw materials obtained from various suppliers for our manufacturing process since the end product is not tested for gluten.

You should check with your doctor if you have any concerns about taking any Advil® product.

I was just going to ask what people do when they accidentally get glutened, to help the pain and discomfort while waiting it out, and I saw this thread, which probably has the same answers I was looking for.  Anyone know if Pepto has corn or soy product?  I hate pepto. The few times I took it when I was younger, I'd always throw up after.  Not sure if it's the medicine or the flavor.  So I hesitate trying it.  But I am in pain, and have so much to do this week, it is hard to be suffering with this right now.

When you are recovering from being glutened, can some "safe" foods still bother you?  I hardly ate for a few days, and then was having mostly eggs. Those seem to be the most gentle on my stomach.  But I was starting to get really hungry and weak, so last night had a little steak.  That, apparently, was a big mistake.  Yet in the past being gluten-free, steak was an okay food for me.  Do you think it's just too harsh while I am healing from this accidental gluten issue?

Meanwhile, I have no idea how I got glutened.  All I can think of is that it is time to get separate pans and utensils for myself.  I have been washing things super good, like three times if it was used for gluten (once with a gluten-used sponge, once with my hands, once with another sponge), and so far, the past year, that has worked fine.  But all I can think is I somehow didn't wash well enough this time and got cross contamination?  I have no idea. So, I have learned my lesson. I will have to just spend the money and find a space to store gluten-free pans and utensils from now on. My other thought was our grill.  We had a cookout and one person brought hot dogs that had cheese in them.  I have no idea if there was any gluten in them or not.  I know many burgers I've looked at that have flavors in them, like onions, or cheese, often have gluten fillers in them too.  But we have cooked on the grill since then, and I was okay.  My husband cleans it off really well. I asked him from now on if someone brings a food with gluten, use tin foil on the grill, or we need to tell people, sorry, nope, can't do it.  I don't think some people realize how painfully sick we get.  I don't have celiac, just the sensitivity, and from what I understand, with celiac it's even more dangerous for your health to get cross contamination.  But oh, those symptoms, so much suffering! I am having trouble even sleeping at night with it.  I forgot how awful it had been before getting the diagnose and going gluten-free.

Anyone ever feel heavy with their breathing when they get the stomach distention and it causes your ribs to ache from the pressure, and your upper back to ache on and off?  I had a lung CT scan, a chest x-ray, and an EKG in January, and it all looked fine.  But it seems when I get the really bad gluten symptoms or have corn or soy product and get the stomach distention, my chest feels a little like when I get bronchitis.  Although allergies are really bad right now too, and I get really congested, and I think that is adding to it too.  Right now I could just scream, lol.

What other soft foods do you all eat when recovering from a cross contamination incident?  I am really getting sick of eggs, even though I used to love them. I had just gotten a Stoneyfield yogurt to try last week (before I got accidentally glutened) at the store that is gluten free, but it has "natural ingredients" and I was going to try it to see if it bothered me or not.  I'd love to be able to have yogurt.  But now since this gluten flare up, I don't dare try it while in the middle of being so bothered right now.  It is hard when you can't have gluten. When so sick, my instinct is to have tea and toast or crackers.  I can't even have jello (I think that has corn in it?).  What do you eat when recovering until you stomach can handle more?

I can't take Advil since I am allergic to ibruprophen.  Tylenlol never helps me at all, plus since I having gluten issues, it gives me a stomach ache (not sure why, maybe it has corn or soy in it).  I can take aspirin, but have not looked into a brand that is gluten, corn, and soy-free yet.  Sort of at wit's end today. I feel inflammation, like even up my esophagus and besides stomach issues, feel weak and just generally sick all over.  I just spent weeks researching prescription meds to get ones with no corn or soy (or gluten).  And before that, spent a while searching for vitamin supplements.  So I had taken a break before looking into aspirin (and then after that, I'll look into sinus and allergy meds).  It gets exhausting doing all this research.

So, any other soft, gentle food suggestions?  What brands of tea do you use? I have seen some herbal teas that have "natural flavor" in the ingredients, and I know some of those can be iffy to us all here.

Gatorade is my best friend when I am glutened.  I drink the berry rain.  It helps with the pain and bloating really quick.  Be careful with tea's.  I have found several that have gluten in them, they use it to help the leaves not bunch together.  The same goes for coffee.  I buy the whole beans and grind them myself.  Like someone else said Advil gel caps have gluten in them also.  It is amazing how many prescription meds have gluten in them.  Lots of research all the time.  Hope you feel better soon.  I was glutened and not sure what got me but it has been a month and I am still having problems..

Stew, soup and even cooked fruit — anything mushy.  I eat this for breakfast lunch and dinner.  Anything hurts to digest for a few weeks.

As far as gluten is concerned.  Our house is gluten free, but even when it was mixed, I accepted no outside food that could contaminate my kitchen, including my grill.  Some people bring food still, but I graciously accept and later give it away.  I ask people to bring beverages, paper plates, etc. if they want to contribute.  My SIL is great.  She offers cash to cover food expenses since we often host family parties.

I hope you feel better soon!

I use Original Alka Selzer for acute stomach upset. Then, Cream of Rice cereal to sooth and fill my belly while flushing out the contaminant. Walgreen's Nutritional shake to supplement vitamins and minerals. Baby carrots for fiber.

Not sure if you found relief but when I get glutened I drink lots of water mixed with glutamine it is an amino acid that normally you wouldn’t need, but in times of stress/injury it is depleted. It also plays a role in maintaining the integrity of the instestinal mucuosa. Anyway it works for me in reducing the days I have symptoms. I also swear it helps me immediately reducing my pain symptoms. I am surprised that a lot of people in the forums don’t recommend or haven’t tried it. Also I took a couple of percosets for a migraine one time and it did nothing to alleviate the pain from ingesting gluten. I very much doubt anything would really help alleviate this type of pain but maybe steroids or being knocked out with powerful meds.

I don't think you should be using sponges for cleaning, based upon what the dietician at the GI doc said. She said that they can be contaminated and since there are so many cracks or holes in sponges, they were nearly impossible to clean, even in the dishwasher.  So, I've tossed them and use Handiwipes or Blue Paper Towels instead. The paper towels can be laundered with your kitchen towels and last longer than you'd expect.

We just use 2 different colored sponges - the blue color Is for the few gluten things my husband uses and other colors are gluten-free ( most of the kitchen)

He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with Celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis after years of suffering without answers. I lost my mind. I lost my job. I lost so much time. I lost Me. Conventional doctors are opulent come near me and the one who did sat across the room, misdiagnosed me, pumped me full of steroids which collapsed my entire hip for 6 months. So without answers I began my holistic journey. Fast forward a couple of years and still struggling with a mysterious whole body itchy, crawling “skin hell”, perfect teeth now deteriorating, thick hair now thinning rapidly and no more than a day or 2 at most relief….An acquaintance opened up a functional medicine practice. Cash only, I found a way. Within a month tests clearly showing my off the charts gluten allergy/sensitivity as well as the depletion of vital nutrients due to leaky gut and intestinal damage. dermatitis herpetiformis was more than likely what I was experiencing with my skin. I was happy. I thought this is easy, eat healthy Whole Foods, follow the diet restrictions and I finally get to heal and feel confident and like myself again very soon! 😔 Supplements are very pricey but I got them and began my healing. Which leads to the other major issue: not working, stay at home Mom of young kids, entirely financially dependent on my man of 7 plus years. He’s never been supportive of anything I’ve ever done or been thru. He controls everything. I’m not given much money ever at a time and when he does leave money it’s only enough to possibly get gas. His excuse is that I’ll spend it on other things. So my “allowance” is inconsistent and has conditions. He withholds money from me as punishment for anything he wants. Since being diagnosed, he’s gained a new control tactic to use as punishment. He now is in control of when I get to eat. He asked for proof of my diagnosis and diet bc he said I made it up just to be able to eat expensive organic foods. Then after I sent him my file from my doctor he then said she wasn’t a real doctor. 😡. I go days upon days starving, sometimes breaking down and eating things I shouldn’t bc I’m so sick then I pay horribly while he gets annoyed and angry bc I’m not keeping up with all the duties I’m supposed to be doing. His abuse turns full on when I’m down and it’s in these desperate times when I need his support and care the most that I’m punished with silence, being starved, ignored, belittled. He will create more of a mess just bc I’m unable to get up and clean so that when I am better, I’m so overwhelmed with chores to catch up that the stress causes me to go right back into a flare from hell and the cycle repeats. I’m punished for being sick. I’m belittled for starving and asking for healthy clean water. I’m purposely left out of his life. He won’t even tell me he’s going to the grocery or to get dinner bc he doesn’t want me to ask him for anything. I have no one. I have nothing. Im not better. My supplements ran out and I desperately need Vitamin D3 and a methylated B complex at the very minimal just to function….he stares at me blankly…no, a slight smirk, no words. He’s happiest when im miserable and I am miserable.  this is so long and im condensing as much as I can but this situation is so complicated and disgusting. And it’s currently my life. The “IT” girl, the healthy, beautiful, perfect skin, perfect teeth, thick and curly locks for days, creative and talented IT girl….now I won’t even leave this house bc Im ashamed of what this has dont to my body, my skin. Im disgusted. The stress is keeping me from healing and I think he knows that and that’s why he continues to keep me in that state. He doesn’t want me confident or successful. He doesn’t want me healed and healthy bc then how would he put the blame of all his problems on me? This journey has been hell and I’ve been in Hell before. I’ve been killed by an ex, I’ve been raped, robbed, held hostage, abused beyond nightmares but the cruelty I’ve experienced from him bc of this disease is the coldest I’ve ever experienced. I’ve wanted to give up. Starving and in tears, desperate…I found a local food pantry in our small town so I reached out just saying I had Celiac and was on hard times. This woman is blessing me daily with prepared gluten free meals, donations, educational info, people who know this disease and how they manage life and the blessings just keep coming. But it’s overwhelming and I feel like I don’t deserve it at all. He just glared and I know he’s going to sabotage it somehow. I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’m so broken and just want peace and healing.

@Colleen H   I am just curious,  when you were tested for coeliac disease, did the doctors find out if you had any deficiencies? Sometimes muscle pain can be caused by certain deficiencies, for example, magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, and potassium.   Might be worth looking into having some more tests.  Pins and needles can be neuropathy, again caused by deficiencies, such as iron and B12,  which can be reversed if these deficiencies are addressed. In the UK where I live we are usually only tested for iron, B12 and vitamin D deficiencies at diagnosis.   I was very iron anemic and supplementation made a big difference.  B12 was low normal, but in other countries the UK's low normal would be considered a deficiency.  My vitamin D was low normal, and I've been supplementing ever since (when I remember to take it!) My pins and needles definitely started to improve when my known deficiencies were addressed.  My nutritionist also gave me a broad spectrum supplement which really helped, because I suspect I wasn't just deficient in what I mention above but in many other vitamins and minerals.  But a word of warning, don't take iron unless blood tests reveal you actually need it, and if you are taking it your levels must be regularly monitored because too much can make you ill.  (And if you are currently taking iron, that might actually be making your stomach sore - it did mine, so my GP changed my iron supplementation to a gentler form, ferrous gluconate). Lastly, have you been trying to take anything to lessen the pain in your gut?  I get a sore stomach periodically, usually when I've had too much rich food, or when I have had to take an aspirin or certain antibiotics, or after glutening.  When this happens, I take for just a few days a small daily dose of OTC omeprazole.  I also follow a reflux or gastritis diet. There are lots online but the common denominators to these diets is you need to cut out caffeine, alcohol, rich, spicy, acidic food etc and eat small regularly spaced meals.   When I get a sore stomach, I also find it helpful to drink lots of water.  I also find hot water with a few slices of ginger very soothing to sip, or camomile tea.  A wedge pillow at night is good for reflux. Also,  best not to eat a meal 2-3 hours before going to bed. If the stomach pain is getting worse, though, it would be wise to see the doctor again. I hope some of this helps. Cristiana

I was diagnosed with coeliac disease a couple of years ago [ish]. I love my food and a variety of food, so it's been hard, as it is with everyone. I try and ensure everything I eat doesn't contain gluten, but occasionally I think something must have got through that has gluten in. Mainly I know because I have to dash to the loo, but recently I have noticed that I feel nauseous after possibly being glutened. I think the thing that I have got better at is knowing what to do when I feel wiped out after a gluten 'episode'. I drink loads of water, and have just started drinking peppermint tea. I also have rehydration powders to drink. I don't feel like eating much, but eventually feel like I need to eat. Gluten free flapjacks, or gluten free cereal, or a small gluten free kids meal are my go to. I am retired, so luckily I can rest, sometimes even going to bed when nothing else works. So I feel that I am getting better at knowing how to try and get back on track. I am also trying to stick to a simpler menu and eat mostly at home so that I can be more confident about what I am eating. THANKS TO THOSE WHO REPLIED ABOUT THE NAUSEA .
