Caffiene?

I am just curious if anyone else has problems with drinking caffiene? It seems to make me have abdominal pain, cause C and giving me heartburn for two weeks. At least that is what i am blaming it on. It is frustrating to not be able to drink it at all, but I was curious if others have problems with it. I quit for a week and feel SO much better. It is hard for me though to stay off of it.

Hi Monica.

I can't say as I join ya there. I would be lost without my daily fix. Although, I can't drink coffee to get my caffeine (that hurts), but Coke is fine......

Hugs.

I drink decaf. It was hard at first to change but I got used to it. I like Carob hot drinks too. But yes in answer to your question. I can't tolerate coffee anymore for some reason.

I cant have caffeine at all. I was never a big coffee drinker....I just enjoyed Starbucks Caramel Macciato's occassionally and drank several sodas a day. Since I got sick three years ago I cant handle caffeine. It really messes me up in alot of ways but nothing GI related. I get very shaky, dizzy, migraines plus it messes up my skin for some reason. I dont need caffeine and I dont miss sodas but a couple times I ordered my Starbucks and forgot to say "decaf". :(

OH, I love caffeine, that isn't my problem. I just think it gives me IBS problems. Very annoying. I usually have drank diet pepsi, but sometimes will drink coffee for a few weeks and then quit for awhile, etc. The latest though is that it started giving me horrible heartburn, along with the IBS symptoms. SO I quit for a week, but I am such an addict. I started taking Prilosec and that has helped me quite a bit. I am trying to figure it all out though. It seems after being gluttened, i have alot of the symptoms for a few weeks. I am already vegetarian, gluten free, don't drink alcohol and now my one vice of caffeine is being taken away too!! UGH! WHen will it ever end. I think I am going to turn into a rabbit! JK!

I am going to the GI doctor tomorrow, not sure why since I am a big whimp and don't want any testing done. He is going to think I am a nut!

Thanks guys,

Monica

I can't say that I have a problem with caffeine from any source...if it wasnt for coffee I'd never get through the day. Even when i make instant coffee about 3 times normal strength, it doesnt give me the runs or nothing. (thank god lol)

Yeah i'd die without coffee. I'm a coffee-holic. Enough said :P

I am intolerant to caffeine (it has salicylates in it), but I am theoretically allowed to drink decaf. But since I am intolerant to dairy and HATE coffee without cream, I don't bother. I never drank much coffee, because I've never felt good afterwards (and it makes me incredibly sleepy  ), so I don't miss it.

It bothers my stomach. I dont know if that's from Crohn's or just a problem with IBS in general.

If I drink Caffeine it makes me really shaky and aggitated. I don't know if that is because I'm not used to it or because my body just doesn't like it. I drink a lot of sparkling water. It has the bubbles like soda but not the bad stuff. I also love decaf coffee. I make a pot most mornings and my husband passes it up for instant (yuck!) regular coffee.

I think the caffeine is causing me IBS symptoms and now possibly heartburn. I have drank plenty of stuff for years with caffeine. It has been my major hangup in life and now I have to give that up too!!? Where is the fun in my life?! I know, I am taking this rather rough. Well, gotta go, I am off to the doctor. We will see what he says, but I hate going to the doctor!

I can not have any caffeine--gives me bad abdominal pains also. I haven't had caffeine in over 10 years. I can't even do caffeine free teas, only herbal. No decaf coffee either.

I freely admit I am addicted to caffine, but other htat hta I ahve no problems with it. *sip* :D

Well is the intolerance because of IBS or Celiac? The way we determined that I didn't have IBS is that when I gave up my Diet Pepsi, my symptoms did not get better!

I have no problem with my daily diet pepsi's! I typically have 2 a day! But I also drink 120 oz of water daily too!

I drink a ton of water too! I am fine for awhile, but I think maybe more of my problem has to do with getting gluten. That seems to be when I have trouble. It is frustrating. I know I have celiac. My son has it and my blood tests were borderline after being gluten free for two months. I get sick when I eat wheat. Anyway, I am wondering if stress plays a role in my symptoms too. I exercise all the time and I really try and eat very healthy, so it is frustrating. THe only thing "bad" I do is drink some caffeine, which is only two diet pepsi's a day or a cup of coffee. IT is frustrating. I know some people don't have any problems with it. Just curious if I was the only one and it seems most people here seem to be ok.

this wouldn't apply to your coffee if it was black, but are you always drinking diet or artificially sweetened beverages. artificial sweetners cause GI symptoms in some folks, i can't have it myself b/c of what it does to me... just another thing to think about.

GlutenFreeAl Contributor

Never could tolerate caffeine. I get shaky, dizzy, headachey, abdominal pains and D. Doesn't matter if it's from coffee, tea, soda...

I believe it's a combination of IBS and just plain old low tolerance that gives me the side effects. Probably, if I forced myself to down coffee every day, the symptoms would not be as bad.

I feel like a teetotaler too - no gluten, no lactose, no soy, no caffeine and no alcohol! What a loser I am!! :P

danikali Enthusiast

GlutenfreeAL, that's how I feel too! And someone else mentioned turning into a rabit......that seems to be me too! So far, I can't have gluten, dairy, soy, nuts, caffeine and most alcohol! After feeling healthy for about 2 weeks straight, I decided to try caffeine again. Just plain black Starbucks coffee, nothing in it. About a half hour after I was drinking it, the stomach aches came on like waves for about an hour. It was horrible. Never again.

Caffeine is a drug!! The body doesn't want it. If you need a boost get some amino acid supplements with some L-tyrosine. Your body obviously doesn't want it, so why drink it? I haven't had caffeine in a year and and half don't care if I ever drink it again.

Good for you for being able to kick the habit!@ As for me, I am terrible at quitting. I feel so much better when I am not drinking it for maybe three weeks straight and then for some reason I always fall back into the habit. Usually from a lack of sleep for a night or so and then it is a vicious cycle of being tired and not sleeping well, then more caffeine. Yeah, I don't think the diet soda is very good for me. It is hard for me for some reason. My brother teases me and says I should just quit trying to quit, but I need to for my health. It is definitely affecting my health negativily, so it is time to quit for good. I can't drink decaf coffee for some reason, that really messes up my stomach.

I figure eventually I will have success!

Caffiene and alcohol are two of the harshest things on a sensitive gut. If you're trying to heal a leaky gut these will not do you any good at all. I'm thinking I'll do alot better with caffeine and alcohol once I'm healed. :)

I can't drink caffeine drinks either, as I get heartburn. But, I don't think it's just the caffeine - tannine (sp?) is also a problem. Interestingly, that's in red wine as well as tea, and red wine gives me migraines. I'm obviously sensitive to both caffeine and tannine. I really miss my tea, and drink fruit/ herbal teas instead. But I have to have them really weak otherwise they cause the same symptoms. Don't know what that's about  But I don't want to end up just having to drink plain hot water if I want a hot drink :(

bklyn Enthusiast

I haven't been able to drink coffee in nearly a year. A few months after going gluten free, I started having stomach pain and nausea and I had to give up all caffeine. I sorely miss it. That was the one cup a day I drank each morning. Now I have to drink herbal tea and it isn't the same. I drink 7up Zero when I want a soda. I don't have any explantation for this (neither does my doc) but since going gluten free, I've had a lot of problems with my stomach. :(

Kathy,

I agree, I had six months of being SO much better gluten free and now I have so many problems with my stomach. It is VERY annoying. I had borderline blood results and so it is frustrating. Sometimes I wonder if I wasn't better off before, but I had horrible bloating before, C and D, bruising, exhaustion, etc., but now I am having heartburn, on and off stomach upsets and problems with C. As hard as I try, I should be in peak performance!! LOL! I know it will gett better and I do think that gluten is involved and stress.

THanks for all the replies. AT least I know I am not the only one having to give up my beloved caffeine.

Monica--I'm going through the exact same thing as you are right now--except I get D instead of C. The rest, I could have written myself. I guess I have no other choice but to just stick with it and hopefully things will get consistantly better again. I don't know of anything I'm doing wrong. I'm so careful when it comes to CC matters here at home, and I have not eaten out of the house in months. I, of course, do go out, but I have been bringing something to eat with me.

On the subject of caffeine--I can't tolerate it. Even decaf coffee. I do, however drink decaf tea.

slpinsd Contributor

I haven't been able to tolerate it for a few years now. I always get decaf coffee, but have been pretty ok with sodas. now, if i have any amount of caffeine whatsoever, i feel jittery, shaky, and anxious. this seems to have worsened after going gluten-free.

Hello, My 17 yr old daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease 2 yrs ago. She does not have gum disease and no history of cavities. Her dentist is recommending braces for her lower teeth but I read it may worsen gum recession or possibly increase cavity risk which I know are already issues for patients with celiac. Has anyone here had braces and did it cause any problems or issues with gum recession?  Her dentist seemed oblivious that celiac patients are at higher risk of gum disease /cavities. Her bottom teeth are crooked but are pretty hidden even when she smiles. Thank you!!

This is a common experience across the board with various brands of gluten-free bread products. Prices go up, size goes down. Removal of the egg component may be for the purpose of cost-cutting related to bird flu supply shortages or it may be catering to those with egg allergy/sensitivity, fairly common in the celiac community.

Living with Coeliac Disease since birth, Bread has always been an issue, never too nice, small slices and always overpriced, But Sainsbury's Free From White Sliced Bread seemed to me to be an exception with it's large uniform 12 x 12cm slices that had the bounce, texture and taste of white bread even after toasting with no issue that it was also Milk Free. Unfortunately Sainsbury's have changed the recipe and have made it 'Egg Free' too and it has lost everything that made the original loaf so unique. Now the loaf is unevenly risen with 8 x 8cm slices at best, having lost it's bounce with the texture dense and cake like after toasting resembling nothing like White Bread anymore. Unsure as to why they have had to make it 'Egg Free' as the price is the same at £1.90 a loaf. Anyone else experiencing the same issue with it? - also any recommendations for White Bread that isn't prescription? / Tesco's / Asda's are ok but Sainsbury's was superior.

Years  ago a friend and I drove north into Canada hoping to find a ski resort open in late spring,We were in my VW and found a small ski area near a small town and started up this gravelled road up a mountain. We  got about halfway up and got stuck in the mud. We tried everything we could think of but an hour later we were still stuck. Finally a pickup came down the road, laughed at our situation, then pulled the VW free of the mud. We followed him back to the ski area where where he started up the rope ski lift and we had an enjoyable hour of skiing and gave us a shot of aquavit  before we left.It was a great rescue.  In some ways this reminds me of your situation. You are waiting for a rescue and you have chosen medical practitioners to do it now or as soon as possible. As you have found out the med. experts have not learned how to help you. You face years of continuing to feel horrible, frustrated searching for your rescuer to save you. You can break away from from this pattern of thinking and you have begun breaking  away by using some herbs and supplements from doTerra. Now you can start trying some of the suggestions thatother Celiacs have written to your original posts.  You live with other people who eat gluten foods. Cross contamination is very possible. Are you sure that their food is completely separate from their food. It  is not only the gluten grains you need to avoid (wheat, barley, rye) but possibly oats, cows milk also. Whenever you fall back into that angry and frustrated way of thinking get up and walk around for a whild. You will learn ways to break that way of thinking about your problems.  Best wishes for your future. May you enjpy a better life.

Thanks for responding. I researched further and Lindt Lindor chocolate balls do contain barely malt powder which contains gluten. I was surprised at all of the conflicting information I found when I checked online.
