Advils website in the inactive list of ingredients lists starch. Is this safe to take? I hurt my neck on Thursday, so I have been taking a lot of ibuprofen. Now my stomach is a mess???

Advil is gluten-free but a lot of ibuprofen can mess up anybody's stomach, especially if it's empty when you take it.

This says it's gluten-free. I believe it's made by the same company as Tylenol, and I'm pretty sure their products are gluten-free.

Also, the motrin website says it's corn starch Open Original Shared Link

Your stomach is probably screwed up because of the ibuprofen itself. It gave me an ulcer after taking a lot of it for a couple of weeks. :(

My GI doc told me not to take salicyates (sp) anymore because of it.

Try taking it with some milk (or soy or almond or whatever) and see if that helps.

EDIT: I misread the post, I thought you were asking about Motrin

My neurologist told me to take Aleve due to nerve damage from bad shingles episode. Aleve is also gluten free. I'd add though that since I've been off gluten I have not had one headache (or any meds for pain). I'm sure they're in my future but I think gluten made me get headaches more often. Just another great reason to stick to my new diet and never look back!

Not all Tylenol products are gluten-free. I had a conversation with a woman there just about a month ago when I called to check on their Rapid Release product (not gluten-free). She sent me the list of gluten-free products they have. If anyone nees info., let me know.

SO what do you guys take for muscle pain?

Hi, Floridanative, I had post-shingles neuropathy, too. You have my sympathies. Mine usually lasted about 1 minute. In the beginning the attacks came and went every few minutes, but they tapered off. They disappeared totally in about a year. Good luck!

Does anybody know exactly what the relationship is between shingles, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (mine started right after the shingles), and celiac disease? I know they're all about the immune system, but does anybody which triggers what and when?

I use ibuprofen (only take it with food!) and hot moist packs for muscle pain. Nothing works on my muscles as well as a long, hot bath!

Hey Dessa, I have a whilpool bath, I will try that tonight. Oh and I just noticed, you are from KS too! I live in Lawrence KS! :D

Hi Monica! I'm just south of Pittsburg, and north of Columbus. I can't find my atlas, so I'm not able to place where Lawrence is. I'll have to ask my husband when he gets home, or one of my teenagers, they claim to know everything!

And enjoy your whirlpool bath, a friend of mine swears by hers! :D

Lawrence is north of Pittsburg. I am located about 25 miles just West of Overland Park and 25 miles East of Topeka. Lawrence is just S of I 70!

I used to get really bad migraines and neck and shoulder pain. My doc (military doc) gave me the giant military horse pills (800 milligrams) of Ibuprofin. I was hurting so bad that I was taking nearly 3200 milligrams of ibuprofin a day!! (4 horse pills) I started feeling dizzy, muscle weakness, fatigue, and other strange symptoms. I went in to the doctor. They said I needed rest and gave me ANOTHER rx for ibuprofin. When I got home I looked at the package insert that came from the pharmacy and read the overdose info for ibuprofin. IT WAS MY SYMPTOMS! FATIGUE, DIZZYNESS, MUSCLE WEAKNESS, I WAS FLOORED!!!

That got me thinking about medicine and pharmacy work. The rest is history. My point is to make sure you read all of that information. It IS important. And be careful not to take too much of any one med. I thought "no big deal" but I was wrong!!!

Yeeeah...those ulcers from long-term overdosing are not terribly fun. Especially if your GI doc misdiagnoses you because you had an abcessed tooth and taking lots of motrin gave you the tiniest of ulcers...

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

Also, be careful about Tylenol, because it's hell on your liver...

Thank you for the nice comment. I actually had constant extreme pain (shingles was misdiagnosed twice as a muscle spasm...so I started the meds too late) that lasted almost three weeks before I finally got in to see the neuro doc. He started me on Neuronton that night. Within two weeks I knew I'd live. Before that I thought no one would be expected to live in such pain. Needless to say it was the worst five weeks of my life. Then after that I never felt good or normal. Tired all the time and it took me five months to get a dr. to tell me I was anemic. At one point I thought the Neuronton caused my anemia...no such luck as it was that pesky Celiac disease. :(

What is Hashimoto's Thyroiditus and how do you test for it? I aksed the Celiac expert I saw speak if there was a connection to Celiac and shingles and she said something like she didn't know of any study about it.

This is a really interesting thread. I've been taking ONLY ibuprofen since I thought it was the safe option. My gran ultimately died from cirrhosis, and she barely drank, so I have been really paranoid about my liver since then. I threw out all my Tylenol and I won't touch it with a ten foot pole now.

dammit.

i took two rapid release tylenols this morning.......maybe that's why i wasn't feeling well.

Open Original Shared LinkFor the person who has shingles I have noticed caffinee and chocolate and energy drinks make it worse. Also scented products such as body washes perfume even cheap shampoo laundry detergent and perfumed lotions irritate the problem. Lot's of Hypo allergenic products use. After every time you get out of the tub put lotion on like Vasaline Intensive care Free works great. Bleach irratates and harsh dish soaps. Believe me I know. <_< I use Dreft for my clothes it's very gentle :)

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is when the stupid immune system (sorry, I'm rather angry at mine just now ) decides that it's allergic to the thyroid and makes antibodies to destroy it. Meanwhile, the pituitary gland senses that the thyroid is not producing enough thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) (which it can't do as it's being destroyed by the immune system), so it produces massive amounts of thyroid stimulating hormone (THS) in an attempt to force the thyroid to produce enough. There is a connection to Celiac that I found by googling "Hashimoto's thyroiditis and celiac" when I developed a rash that was probably dermatitis herpetiformis and wanted more info. None of the doctors I saw had ever heard of this connection even though what I found on line (and there was a fair amount) looks like it's considered standard knowledge. I'm swiftly losing faith in our medical system.

Also be careful of things like the flu shot (which contains mercury unless you beg for an individual-dose ampule, which of course, costs more) and high-levels-of-mercury-containing fish like swordfish and tuna. Mercury does scary things to our immune systems (come to think of it, so do vaccines when you get them in large numbers over a lifetime!), and I'm thoroughly convinced that it plays a role in autism. And look at the high numbers of autistic kids who have celiac!

I definitely can't have ibuprofen. Ouch!! :o

please be careful with motrin..I was taking 6 to 8 800 mg tablets a day, screwed my stomach up real bad, I think thats why I have gerd.

I took a rapid release tylenol a couple hours ago, I've been thick headed and dizzy ever since..I had no idea they had gluten in them

can gluten make me dizzy and feel drugged?

Guest Robbin

I have periodic episodes of elevated liver enzymes, I do not drink alcohol at all, and the drs. have all told me to stay clear of tylenol, so I have taken aspirin for years--does aspirin have gluten?! I always take it with food so I don't think it is messing up my stomach.

I usually have that reaction right away, and then the stomach stuff following.....

I had that discussion with my doc. He actually knew what I was talking about and tested me for the thyroid problems because I have a lot of the symptoms, and the celiac, so there is a greater chance. I totally agree with your statement about the medical system though. I am seriously thinking about going to school to be a Doctor of Naturopathy, which is all natural approaches and REALLY LISTENING to the patient and helping them, not giving them a pill for the problem.

Hi I've been told I need a MRI on my bowels , I was booked for a colonoscopy, but because of my sever back issues and trapped nerve it can't be done , the nurse told me I will have to have a manitol drink a hour before the scan , I'm just a bit worried has I have issues with sweeteners like even a little,  I get a weird throat and ears and I've read it is a similar substance , not sure if anyone has had one of these scans or could give me some advise on the drink prep thanks in advance 😄

Hi all ! Can a celiac attack be so intense that it causes your entire body to work in reverse? Meaning really bad pain,  neuropathy and muscle,  jaw pain,  the stomach issues , Horrible anxiety and confusion??  I had a Tums and you would think I ate poison. My jaw and stomach did not like it . Not the norm for me. Things that are simple are just out of control. Anyone ever have this happen??  I'm trying to figure out what I ate or did to bring on a celiac like attack. I had an idea before but yesterday I didn't have any gluten unless it was in a medication ?! Any positive suggestions ??  Thank you

The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.
    • trents
Tammy, in the food industry, "gluten free" doesn't mean the same thing as "no gluten". As Scott explained, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) allows food companies to use the "gluten-free" label as long as the product does not contain more than 20 ppm (parts per million) of gluten. This number is based on studies the FDA did years ago to determine the reaction threshold for those with celiac disease. And the 20 ppm figure works for the majority of celiacs. There are those who are more sensitive, however, who still react to that amount. There is another, stricter standard known as "Certified Gluten Free" which was developed by a third party organization known as GFCO which requires not more than 10 ppm of gluten. So, when you see "GFCO" or "Certified Gluten Free" labels on food items you know they are manufactured with a stricter standard concerning gluten content. Having said all that, even though you may read the disclaimer on a food item that says the spices may contain wheat, barley or rye (the gluten grains), you should be able to trust that the amount of gluten the spices may contain is so small it allows the total product to meet the requirements of gluten free or certified gluten free labeling. I hope this helps.
