Hey all -- I'm a vegetarian who dosen't eat meat or chicken and very rarely fish... I'm really struggling to find stuff that I like (I know, you are thinking, but you are a vegetarian!!! Vegetables are gluten free!!). I'm a strange eater and I used to live on pizza, a lot of breads, cereal, etc.

Anyway - does anyone know of a gluten free veggie burger? Any I've seen have off limits grains in them. Now that it's getting to be nice out we are cooking on the grill and I miss my fake burgers...

Thanks much!

Maureen :)

Maureen,

I am having the VERY same problem. I don't even know how to cook without my vegetarian substitutes. All of which were made from gluten. I too lived on the stuff you lived on. I can't stand eating a vegetable meal without something else to fill me up.

I have never eaten meat and won't start now, but it is tough sometimes. I go in phases where I am ok with it and right now I am in a phase of being tired of what I am eating. I eat alot of Mexican food.

I have tried the Sunshine patties. ONe was spicey and I didn't like and the other was ok. Not delicious, but it might do in a pinch. Tried another kind, but didn't like those either.

Goodluck,

my Whole Foods has this brand that's near the tofu section, I don't remember the name though. They come in packs of 2 and are SOOOOO good. I like Sunshine, but these are way better in my opinion :P

I've never seen Sunshine burgers or Franklin Farms... are they sold in MA do you by chance know? And the ones from Whole Foods.... you said they were by the tofu... are they labeled gluten free? I've looked for a veggie burger for a year at least so I'd love to find these!

Thanks, Susan

I have not been able to find the Franklin burgers. I have looked. I too have been looking for a good vegeburger. I wish someone would start making a lunch "meat" that was gluten free. THe litelife line makes a good hotdog called a TofuPup. My son with celiac eats them all the time. Most of there stuff has gluten in it. THey list ingredients on the package.

I can't stand the sunshine burgers!!

The best soy based veggie burger I've ever had comes from Sunrich Naturals. Open Original Shared Link I've never been able to locate them at a store, and have had to order directly from the manufactorer. shipping is expensive, but they are SOOOOO GOOOOD! We even crumble them up and use them for tacos, and other "ground meat" type dishes.

Gloria has been more then helpful, and indicated that if anyone wants these products, or information / help on getting stores to stock them to contact her directly.

I've been trying to get stores locally to stock them. Gloria told me that Wild Oats was supposed to carry them. The one in Woodmere OH doesn't, and when they checked with their distrinbutors they found out that they couldn't get them in. So, I'm stuck without them for now..

If you're able to tolerate the ingredients:

Mix;

cooked quinoa

quinoa flour

tapioca flour (holds the burger together)

pulverized sunflower seeds

rice bran and/or flax seed meal,

with chopped mushrooms

fresh chopped ginger

fresh onion

fresh garlic

olive oil

agave nectar

balsamic vinegar

molasses

seasonings (I use salt pepper and cilantro)

Should be a thick textured consistency (if that makes

any sense).

I usually mix up a big bowl for the week and cook

them on my "foreman" grill as needed.

I have the same problem as well. I don't eat any meat, fish, and I'm lactose intolerant. I haven't tried the sunshine burgers yet. I was so dependent on my frozen vegetarian substitutes, that I had no idea what to do when I found out that I couldn't have them. I have just been eating lots of mushrooms and veggies with rice. I eat lots of Mexican food as well.

Michael,

Thank you so much for the website. THey look really good. What is your favorite one?? I think I can get our Earth Fare here in Tennessee to order them and stock them. I am very excited about this!! You just made my day!

Yippee!!! Thank you all for replying! I am lucky as I have a Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Trader Joes & Wegmans within an hour of me, so hopefully one of them has got to carry the burgers!!! I love this message board -- I think I'd starve without it

Maureen,

It actually tells where they carry them online. I will be living in MD in a few months and they will have them there at Whole FOods it says, but I am going to order some online first. I know what you are saying about starving to death without this website. I have learned so much here and found some great foods, because of this place.

The "gluten-free" isn't plastered all over the package (as it should be!). Look on the back, right hand side. It says something about Franklin Farm burgers are gluten-free.... yada yada." It's in small print, easy to miss

I like the portabello ones better than the regular ones. Not bad!

Sorry I haven't found any great gluten free burgers myself...but I found some great gluten free chicken but can't remember the name of it...I had to e-mail the company to make sure they were gluten-free...they are reeally good but expensive....at least for me with 4 of us gluten free 6 little chicken nuggets for 5 bucks doesn't work for me except if I am extreamly desperate. The next time I am at the health food store I will try to get the name and post it here. I use soy curls in a lot of things you can look them up on the web...season with mcormicks mock chicken seasoning and italian seasoning and a little onion and garlic powder and add to your favorite stir fryed veges over rice or rice noodles. Also I have a great tofu loaf recipe that even people who say they hate tofu love so if anyone wants that recipie just e-mail me and let me know...I would post it but it is late and need a little sleep. :)

Hey-

Just wanted to throw a few things out there that are good for vegetarians too. I eat a lot of lightlife tempeh in soy, wild rice or flax. Great source of protein and good to eat. I like to saute with gluten-free soy sauce with rice or even throw it in sushi with avocado. The best gluten-free veggie dog is the tofu pups. I just tried the soy boy ones and they were pretty gross. Also, soy boy does make a flavored tofu that is gluten free and tastes good, it says gluten-free on the package. Annies and bone suckin sauce also makes marinades that are gluten free that you can just dump on plain extra firm tofu and let soak for the day and then make a sandwhich or have it with rice.

I was a vegetarian for 10 years before my diagnoses, unfortantely I got really anemic doing my gluten-free diet and veg. diet so i am taking iron and a lot of b vitamins and have started eating small amounts of meat. So for those balancing these diets, please be careful to get your B vitamins in yr diet!! see a dietician if you can! (one that knows about celiac that is)

Hey Maureen,

Making your own is a really great idea, but Sol Cuisine also makes a pretty good one for when you're on the run. They have a Spicy Bean flavour that is nice crumbled in corn tortillas.

I had my health food store order the Southwestern Style Sunshine burgers. They are sooooo good! Better than a hamburger. Wish I had bought more of them. I want another, and another.

loraleena Contributor

Pixiegirl. Where in Ma. are you. Whole Foods has Sunshine burgers in the frozen foods by the other veggie burgers. In Greenfield Ma. they have them at the Greenfield Market (co-op).

Is there a digestive enzyme that helps build a healthier gut? I see people taking them but not sure what really works
    • trents
So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.
