Nice *friend*, Judy  I'm with Rachel--she gained all her weight back and added some more besides. Sounds like she's jealous and dosen't want to admit that you succeeded at something that she didn't. Kind of petty, considering you had to get sick and completely change your way of eating. Don't let that get you down ;):D

Rachel--24 Collaborator
Okay, I know I've been gone for a while but I don't remember this part.... what "mess" did you get yourself into? Was it the "sweet potato madness?" :D

Hi Floridian,

Yeah....I was talking about the sweet potatoes. I guess I was right about them because every single day last week I had loose stools and ever since I stopped eating them the bm's are normal again. Stupid sweet potatoes. <_<

Rachel--24 Collaborator
Okay, I went to the first site and printed out all 7 pages and read through them. I would not be at all surprised if what they're saying is true (glutamic acid can cause health problems).

BUT--where are the studies they are quoting? Why aren't they cited so we can read them as well? The fact that they don't list the specific studies takes so much from their credibility. It's just as bad as the vaccine manufacturers bleating, "Studies show that vaccines are safe."

I'm sorry, but I want to read the studies on which they base their claims.

One other thing was kind of weird: "It has been repeatedly demonstrated that infant animals fed processed free glutamic acid when young develop neuroendocrine problems such as gross obesity, stunted growth, and reproductive disorders later in life, and that they also develop learning disablities."

Um, I didn't know that they could measure learning disabilities in animals, or that learning disabilities in animals have even been identified. And they didn't cite any studies showing when and where this has been demonstrated.

I'm not arguing with their conclusion (yet). But shouldn't they back up their claims with specific studies?

OK...just did a quick search cuz I'm only on my lunch break...I didnt find the sites I'd seen previously but found some results of various studies that were done. I remember reading that there have been something like over 400 studies done on lab animals so there should be plenty of info. out there. I'll look more later too.

Also I found this link but havent checked it yet.

If you are one of the few who can still believe that MSG is good for us, and you don't believe what John Erb has to say, see for yourself. Go to the National Library of Medicine, at Open Original Shared Link < http://www.pubmed.com> . Type in the words "MSG Obese" and read a few of the 115 medical studies that appear

I didn't say I believe that it's good for us! Where did you get that idea?

I just think it's ridiculous to say "studies show that..." and not name those studies! It makes it look less than truthful.

Thank you for posting the links!

Oh...sorry. I actually didnt write it. I just pulled up that whole paragraph and pasted it with the link cuz I was in a hurry on my lunch break. I dont even know who John Erb is??

Sorry if it sounded like I was writing that....thats not my style. :P

Thanks for the links Rachel. I wish now that I had kept up with info on msg. I unknowingly consumed more than I would have liked to during the last pregnancy. With all the msg sprayed on crops now it will be a wonder if that many children now grow up without some sort of problem(s).

:(:( I wish I could eat out :(:(

I just came home from another really fun night out. It was only a movie...but if I could eat out like the rest of the world around me the night could start earlier and end later. Know what I mean? ;)

I'm pouting right now.

Anyways, I'm not really prepared for getting interested in anybody. Its not exactly part of my

"plan" ya know. I was suppossed to get better first. :(

I've totally stuck to the "plan" for 2 years now...I havent accepted any dates or anything....just focused on my health. Its actually been really good for me since I've never been single or had "time off" since I was under 16. I've learned alot about myself.

Only reason I started going out with this guy is cuz we're friends...so no big deal. Now I'm really liking spending time with him.....maybe a little too much.

Also I dont know if he's at all interested in me. Guess time will tell. :)

Oh, he did say that when he dates someone he likes to take them to different restaraunts and try all different foods. Guess if he ever did wanna date me he'd have to be a little more creative huh? Or we could just keep going to all the movies and hope we dont run outta stuff to see. :P

Rachel-

I feel for you. I have been doing more latley and its great but its frustrating becasue I feel like if I can do some of the normal stuff why can't I do more- Like GO Out to eat!! or go for a drink. I was never a huge drinker but god I miss meeting friends for a quick drink so badly. And I was always a huge eater so I definitly miss going out for a quick bite. being sick just puts so many limits on what you can do. I know I ahve to be disiplined I just wish I was getting more positive results.

It sounds like this guy does like you. And think about it he likes going out and trying new foods you could introduce him to foods that he would never find out about with a regular chick- millet, quinoa, weird vegees.

LMAO!!! :lol::lol:

I'm thinking that would be a great way to scare him off....in case I dont like him later!!

I know I'd be scared if the situation was reversed....quinoa is gross! :P

I know you were meaning to be serious but thanks for the laugh Miamia! :D

Oh...at least if we cant eat out right now...couldnt we at least be able to have Starbucks or Jamba Juice or something....sheeesh....why does everything have to be off limits?? :(

I was having a reaction yesterday....it wasnt a major one but when I react its sooo much more noticeable now. It was kind of like last Friday when I wasnt clear headed and kind of "giddy"....at least this time I didnt do anything stupid...I think.

Anyways I felt like I was driving like I'd been drinking or something...nothing dramatic....just like I was a little buzzed. Also, I kept bumping into him while we walked (it wasnt on purpose :P ). He was laughing about it...sometimes when I get a reaction my balance is kind of thrown off for a day or two and I crash into stuff alot...walls, people, doors....pretty much anything that gets in my way.

Do any of you crash into stuff during a reaction? I'm thinking I could have been glutened minorly...it seems like I get like that from gluten. I know it was from pancakes....I think because of my gut still being really leaky....I'm just more vulnerable to cc from the flours. I know they cant be totally down to 0 ppm but I hate that such trace amounts have an affect. :(

rinne Apprentice

I've noticed a dizziness in the past year or so, it is like I'm drunk, just a little bit, and I have to concentrate to keep walking in a straight line. It has been less since I've been somewhat gluten free.

The symptoms we all share astonish me. I think it was on this thread/book that there was a discussion about earings and glutening, yes? In the past couple of years I've also had that problem. I wonder what else there is? At 51 I figured the night sweats I was having were related to menopause and then I read somewhere that this is also an experience people have when they are getting off gluten and that is when I started having them !

Is there anywhere all these symptoms are collected?

Also.

I was told yesterday that even olive oil which says 100% olive oil may contain soy oil. Has anyone else heard this?

Did you find out about the cysts Rachel? I ask because when I start bumping into things and dropping things it's usually hormonal. Sorry you probably talked extensively about the cyst thing already (I missed a few pages here and here :))

If your guy cooks I think you should give him a bunch of ingredients that are safe and challenge him to cook something for you. Hey if he manages you'll know he's a keeper

I havent mentioned the cysts in awhile so you havent missed much there....my appt. is coming up on the 13th. I'm pretty sure I'm just having another food reaction but I'm also ovulating which seems to make me more sensitive and reactive anyway. I ate a ton of chocolate so I think that set me off.

I'm thinking he doesnt cook since he eats pretty much like I used to eat before I got sick. Mostly fast food...he proabably eats mexican food everyday... its his favorite....he eats alot of it. I really miss those big burritos and corn chips w/ guacamole. We talk about food alot. If I was still healthy we would never disagree on what to eat.....we like all the same stuff. Except I'm a Big-Mac girl....always and he's a Quarter Pounder guy. <_<

Get cooking, girlfirend!!!!! Ask him over for dinner, and make those burritos (with corn tortillas) and guacamole, and get gluten-free corn chips like Fritos Scoops! Or make your own buns (I've come across a bunch of recipes, tried one which was not bad, haven't tried Annalise's yet, but I hear her submarine bread is great), and make Big Macs AND Quarter Pounders! Heck, have him cook with you--it's fun!! :P

Haha...sounds really fun...and yummy. :)

Maybe in the future I could do something like that. Right now I'm too limited in what I can eat. If I could eat any of the stuff in your post I'd be a happy camper right now and my diet wouldnt even be an issue. Unfortunately thats not the case. :(

I've learned how to cook and I enjoy it but theres just not much I can make....it would be kind of pointless to cook a gluten-free meal for him that I cant eat myself.

Oh, poop. I didn't realize you couldn't eat corn. Sorry, Rachel. :(

I wonder if anybody's ever made millet tortillas....

I'm optimistic that in the next year or so I'll be eating alot of stuff I cant eat now. Maybe it will just be gluten and dairy I'll have to worry about. Maybe even just gluten!

Rachel,

Your friend sounds like he could benefit from your knowledge of food.

It's nice that you have someone you can pal around with.

We went to church today, first time in awhile with my daughters sickness and then with the baby. We went upstairs since my daughter wanted to go to the fellowship hall, to see who was in the kitchen. The first thing she and M did was take a roll. I was only out of their sight for about 2 minutes. Talitha says that she didn't know the rolls had gluten in them. I wasn't a very happy camper to say the least. I obviously need to do some educating. :( Now we'll wait and see if either of them have a reaction to the gluten.

Rachel,

This is not a lecture, just an observation, but you know the saying, "life is what happens when you are busy making plans...", or something like that? I am in total support of focusing on one's health, but I would hate for anyone to let something pass them by because they were waiting for the "right time". You know what I mean?? Because there never really is the "right time" for anything.

I say this because this is what I experienced, and I almost let the biggest and best thing in my life pass me by because I didn't feel like I could be a part of something while I wasn't healthy.

Just food for thought :lol::lol:

Okay so now I have to grow all my own fruits and vegetables AND make my own olive oil. Just kidding, but seriously, what's up with the inability we have in this country to buy safe food? Why can't a bottle that says "olive oil" just be olive oil? That whole thing is really bizzare.

Okay I just checked my olive oil. It's Bionaturae, and it claims that it's made in Italy and the olives are grown on small organic farms. I hope there's not mystery ingredients in my olive oil...

Your post demonstrates the profound frustration and isolation that so many in the Celiac community feel, and I want to thank you for channeling that experience into advocacy. The medical gaslighting you endured for decades is an unacceptable and, sadly, a common story, and the fact that you now have to "school" your own GI specialist speaks volumes about the critical lack of consistent and updated education. Your idea to make Celiac Disease a reportable condition to public health authorities is a compelling and strategic one. This single action would force the system to formally acknowledge the prevalence and seriousness of the disease, creating a concrete dataset that could drive better research funding, shape medical school curricula, and validate the patient experience in a way that individual stories alone often cannot. It is an uphill battle, but contacting representatives, as you have done with Adam Gray, is exactly how change begins. By framing it as a public health necessity—a matter of patient safety and protection from misdiagnosis and neglect—you are building a powerful case. Your voice and your perseverance, forged through thirty years of struggle, are exactly what this community needs to ensure that no one else has to fight so hard just to be believed and properly cared for.

Navigating medication safety with Celiac disease can be incredibly stressful, especially when dealing with asthma and severe allergies on top of it. While I don't have personal experience with the HealthA2Z brand of cetirizine, your caution is absolutely warranted. The inactive ingredients in pills, known as excipients, are often where gluten can be hidden, and since the FDA does not require gluten-free labeling for prescription or over-the-counter drugs, the manufacturer's word is essential. The fact that you cannot get a clear answer from Allegiant Health is a significant red flag; a company that is confident its product is gluten-free will typically have a customer service protocol to answer that exact question. In situations like this, the safest course of action is to consider this product "guilty until proven innocent" and avoid it. A better alternative would be to ask your pharmacist or doctor to help you identify a major national brand of cetirizine (like Zyrtec) whose manufacturer has a verified, publicly stated gluten-free policy for that specific medication. It's not worth the risk to your health when reliable, verifiable options are almost certainly available to you. You can search this site for USA prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/

What you're describing is indeed familiar to many in the Celiac community, especially in the early stages of healing. When the intestinal villi are damaged from Celiac disease, they struggle to properly digest and absorb fats, a condition known as bile acid malabsorption. This can cause exactly the kind of cramping and spasms you're seeing, as undigested fats can irritate the sensitive gut lining. It is highly plausible that her reactions to dairy and eggs are linked to their higher fat content rather than the proteins, especially since she tolerates lean chicken breast. The great news is that for many, this does improve with time. As her gut continues to heal on a strict gluten-free diet, her ability to produce the necessary enzymes and bile to break down fats should gradually return, allowing her to slowly tolerate a wider variety of foods. It's a slow process of healing, but your careful approach of focusing on low-fat, nutrient-dense foods like seeds and avocado is providing her system the best possible environment to recover. Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal. This article may be helpful: Thank you for sharing your story—it's a valuable insight for other parents navigating similar challenges.

I had a very rough month after diagnosis. No exaggeration, lost so much inflammatory weight, I looked like a bag of bones, underneath i had been literally starving to death. I did start feeling noticeably better after a month of very strict control of my kitchen and home. What are you eating for breakfast and lunch? I ignored my doc and ate oats, yes they were gluten free, but some brands are at the higher end of gluten free. Lots of celics can eat Bob's Red Mill gluten-free oats, but not me. I can now eat them, but they have to be grown and processed according to the "purity protocol" methods. I mail order them, Montana Gluten-Free brand. A food and symptoms and activities log can be helpful in tracking down issues. You might be totally aware, but I have to mention about the risk of airborne gluten. As the doc that diagnosed me warned . . Remember eyes, ears, nose, and mouth all lead to your stomach and intestines.  Are you getting any cross contamination? Airborne gluten? Any pets eating gluten (they eat it, lick themselves, you pet them...)? Any house remodeling? We live in an older home, always fixing something. I've gotten glutened from the dust from cutting into plaster walls, possibly also plywood (glues). The suggestions by many here on vitamin supplements also really helped me. I had some lingering allergies and asthma, which are now 99% gone. I was taking Albuterol inhaler every hour just to breathe, but thiamine in form of benfotiamine kicked that down to 1-2 times a day within a few days of starting it. Also, since cutting out inflammatory seed oils (canola, sunflower, grapeseed, etc) and cooking with real olive oil, avocado oil, ghee, and coconut oil, I have noticed even greater improvement overall and haven't used the inhaler in months! It takes time to weed out everything in your life that contains gluten, and it takes awhile to heal and rebuild your health. At first it's mentally exhausting, overwhelming, even obsessive, but it gets better and second nature.
