Fun Fun Fun....I love doing stuff like that. Redecorating is so much fun. :D

I cant wait to do my bedroom. I was redoing one room per year before I got sick...since then the only thing I've done is my scrapbook area. I posted it on another thread....it was so much fun designing and building it. When we moved in we didnt buy new furniture. Seemed to me that a new house should have all new stuff too....thats what I was working on. I love IKEA and I did our media room with everything from IKEA. I love the way the room turned out. I cant do much now cuz of the medical issues and expenses. :(

I remember your scrapbook room--it is beautiful!

Like sands through the hourglass these are the days of our lives here on the OMG thread....

Our story began long long ago with corn (oh how I long for the simple days of corn), and then msg and packaged/processed foods, somewhere in the middle there was a dramatic Bumble Bar intervention, a tropical storm, followed by cysts and ovary pain, and the shocking twist of alien babies, carbon water filters and now gluten's evil twin gliadin.

I missed all of it until ovary pain, alien babies, and water filter issues.....holy Lord how far do I have to go back for Bumble Bar - whatever that is - and the tropical storm? Need to paint my whole house, don't have time to read this tome of a thread!!

I have had the biggest revelation today, learning about this gliadin issue. I'm just putting 2 and 2 together and now some things are making sense. Last week when I had "d" (and I never have "d" so I knew something was up) I had eaten Nature's Path Sunrise Mesa cereal the night before. It has amaranth flour in it! I don't really have all of these non-gluten, but gliadin containing grains very much, but my theory is even if you just have them a handful of times throughout the year you are still agitating your intestinal lining and not allowing it to heal, that's why I am going off dairy for good because I always stir things up even if I only eat it once in a while. Now I am thinking if we pay attention to the gliadin as well, it might make a big difference.

I just am so grateful for this thread because I learn so much from all of you :)

wait a minute....I eat Mesa Sunrise all the time - - are you saying there's gliadin in it, in the Amaranth?? oh my gosh, this would explain my D this week......I will keep reading the thread to get more info....

Cissie - - where are you in the south - - would love to move to Tennessee (my peeps are from the south, many generations in Georgia and my dad was born in Chatanooga - - LOVE TENNESSEE - LOVE ELVIS - went to Graceland, that's right, AND saw Elvis when I was 10 - woo-hooooo!!) Your cousin's a climber, eh? Awesome - - send a photo - so sad that he's a little bit, uh, GD (geographically undesireable) as I can't really move right now or anytime in the future.... :huh: Tell him I used to lead 5.11 bolted routes, but am a trad/sport climber, no big wall stuff.....highest was only 1500 feet or so - he'll understand!

BTW you can get gluten-free oats at GlutenFreeOats.com - - I ordered them no problems at all!

Rachel: Have you tried Cream of Buckwheat? I bought a box at my health food store, but haven't tried it yet. It says wheat and gluten free on the box. Does anyone know anything about buckwheat?

Thank you all for your congratulations on our anniversary!! :) Our box of cards has been growing+!+! Just thought I would expand a bit as a gr. gramma...it takes a lot of work on both spouses part to make a marriage happy and long, also as people get older they seem to mellow and do not have to work as hard to keep it healthy as when younger!!

Maybe Rachel answered also about buckwheat but thought I would add my experience with it. I have used it quite sometime occasionally but need to find a way to fix it so it has more flavor. Seems like what I have also lacks nutrition . Am sad quinoa seems to be a problem for many, has more nutrition + more flavor but if it makes people sick "out the window". It really does have to be rinsed quite a bit. I finally followed the directions on millet pkg and browned it/ bit of oil in skillet before simmering and that adds a very good flavor to it.

Amazing today, over 2000 posts!! And not even a pj party going!! :) evie

Another thing, Susan; I have an unmarried cousin who's a rock climber. He's sort of a free-thinking, leftover hippy, except he cleans up after himself, and he's very organized. He's never been married, but recently told me he hasn't given up on having a wife and family. I love him dearly! He's only about 2 1/2 years older than my eldest son, which makes him about 55-56. He owns a house in Oak Ridge, TN, where it's often foggy, and rains and snows more often than it does here! Forgive me; I've never tried my hand at match-making, and guess I shouldn't now. But I will combine my prayers with Robbin's.

I was wondering about raw milk myself but then I read that raw milk can be dangerous. The pastuerization makes it safe to drink. I dont remember the exact reason but I'm thinking along the lines of bacteria and things of that nature.

That's a tough question. To really test out the grain/rice theory, you'd need something else to fall back on. I'm lucky in that I can eat potatoes--but that's the only starch I can eat. Can you eat acorn and butternut squash? I think I remember you said you don't like spaghetti squash. Truthfully, I see a difference pretty quickly whan I stop eating something that's causing symptoms--like in a few days. Here's what happens with me and rice--I eat Cream of Rice--it tastes good, and I feel fine. I have some more rice at dinner, or something baked with rice flour. This goes on for a while, then I start to get D more often, cramping, generally not feeling well. It's like I have a limit somewhere (but I don't know when to stop). That's why I find it easier to skip it altogether. I'm rambling here--and not being much help

Patti, I find this really helpful. I have the same experience. I'm sure part of the problem is that I don't make a half cup of rice I make three cups and then it is sitting there and I keep eating it.

Buckwheat is part of the rhubarb family and not a wheat at all so technically it should be fine, I seem to have some reaction to it though, :( and I really like it.

Is lamb fatty? I seem to have some of the same problems with lamb that I do with fats. I've changed the way I cook it so that theres no grease or anything and it helps a little but I was just curious. :unsure:

Yes indeed. I'm having a hard time sharing the computer with my hubby today. We are getting ready to go out to return stuff so I'll be 10 pages behind when we get back right.

Raw milk is supposed to be better for you, but yes you have the bacteria possibility. I've read it's best to go out to a farm a look around and buy a share of a cow. They have you bring your containers and pick up your milk, which with gas prices could get expensive. I've also read ultra pastuerization is bad. 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other. I don't know to make of it. I'd rather have my own cow.

I've read that when raw milk goes bad, it becomes sour, but is still a food. When pasteurized milk goes bad, it becomes rancid, and can be very harmful. The difference is pasteruzed milk has a much longer shelf life. I don't know, I stay away from both forms. The arguments I've read in favor of raw seem to be pretty powerful though, especially when you look at everything that goes into conventional processed dairy.

Gosh that was a boring post, sorry....so not in the spirit of the crazy OMG soap opera/cult. I used to refer to it as a book, but it's so progressed beyond that level. I like Cissie's idea about her cousin :D

I like the idea of raw milk...not really fond of the idea of milking the cow myself but I tell you what... if that's what it takes to make me better .... you'll see a picture of me sitting on an upside down pail milking :D

I'm sure I left a lot out of the OMG soap opera/saga recap. I just highlighted some of the more dramatic moments and plot twists. Feel free anyone to jump in and add anything I overlooked.

On a serious note, I actually have heard convincing arguments in support of raw dairy, like Mango mentioned. At one time I was going to a classic homeopathist, who was a former M.D., who went alternative because he had had enough of western medicine. Anywho, he had done lots of research on the raw vs. pasturized dairy issue and he said that the pasturization process is the problem. I can't recall exactly what it all entailed, but much like how partially hydrogentated oils are poison to us because the molecular structure has been altered, same goes for dairy when pasturized. Raw dairy is supposedly assimilated better by the body.

I agree though the other side of the argument is a valid one, about e coli contamination for example.

Gosh, Susan, I'm glad you aren't offended! :) I live outside Atlanta, near Stone Mountain. Only one of my six children still lives in Georgia, in Coweta County. She belongs to an Elvis fan club, and makes the pilgrimage to Graceland every August. I saw Elvis in a concert in Atlanta many years ago. My parents lived in Whitehaven, not very far from Graceland; and my two sisters live just over the state line in Southhaven, MS.

My daddy was born in Shelbyville, TN, which is just south of Nashville. A bunch of Germans served their time in the army during the Revolutionary War, and after the war they crossed the mountains with their families and settled in that area. We still go to the cemetary outside Shelbyville once a year for what, in Tennessee, is called Decoration Day.

I'll have my cousin email me a picture of himself, and I'll pm it to you. He used to live in Vermont or New Hampshire (can't remember which), and that's when he started rock climbing, as well as cross-country skiing. He has a red beard, and would look gorgeous in a kilt of our Forsyth Clan plaid! Can't persuade him to do it though.

Evie, I also bought some quinoa, but was ready to toss it out before even trying it. What I've learned about it on this string had me scared. Maybe I'll take a chance, and try it by rinsing it well and following the millet method.

Rachel, what I know about raw milk is that, many years ago, one of my aunts drank it, and came down with "undulant fever," whatever the heck that is. I was just a kid, but I do remember that she ran a low fever for months, and was tired all the time. That's ancient history, and I'll bet there's no problem with that today.

I'm supposed to be working on some sample boards to show my daughter-in-law for one of her bathrooms, but here I sit, trying to stay caught up with the best and funniest string ever! That reminds me, Patti, what color(s) are you painting your walls?

Patti - I love redecorating...love it. Have fun!!! I grew up in an all off-white house, lol...when I got my condo I painted my room blue and the spare room yellow, and I thought my father was going to have a heart attack when he came to see. Like Rachel I haven't been able to do much for a long time now, but eventually I'm going to paint the living room purple and the bathroom pink. :D

I think we all ought to pool our money and buy a huge parcel of land somewhere where we can build our little homes and have a community garden/farm where we grow our own stuff and milk our own cows or goats as appropriate. :lol:

I was just sitting here and felt a pinch behind my knee and there was an ant! I flicked it away and a couple minutes later another sharp pinch on my leg and the ant was back!! How can an ant be biting me??

I might have had another revelation today. I've been on a downward spiral the past few weeks...kind of struggling to feel well again. I just realized (and went back several pages to verify) that I had started taking digestive enzymes again....about 1 week before all hell broke loose. I got on the Keto at the beginning of my vaction because I was already feeling really bad and just wanted to get myself started on the meds. I was having loose stools the whole time I was on the enzymes and having the yams and sweet potatoes. What if it was the enzymes that I was taking before each meal that was the real problem? Once I start going downhill I react to everything anyways so maybe I started reacting to the sweet potatoes because of the enzymes. I would imagine if there was any Auxigro my reactions would be severe if my system was already messed up. I stopped the enzymes the same time I stopped the sweet potatoes. With my past record with supplements I'm thinking the enzymes had a huge part in what happened to make things get worse for me.

Donna--My parent's house to this day is completely off-white inside. Very little hanging on the walls, and neat as a pin! My homes have always resembled one of those little antique-gift shops you see in little towns in the country. Lots of color and things around me that mean something to us. Not messy or cluttered, but quite the opposite of the way I grew up!

I love the idea of pooling our money and buying land. Maybe then we could all get healthy on our own produce, etc. Well, we can dream :rolleyes:

      @Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed.       Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

      Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

      I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
