Yes, Thank you, Donna--gauchos. I was trying to think of the word to tell Andrea. I bought a pair of wide-legged capri pants this summer--I don't know why they weren't just called gauchos because that's what they look like! Very comfortable. My summer 'uniform' is a t-shirt or sleeveless top, capri pants and Birkenstocks. That's how I'm the most comfortable :D I guess I'll live in the ho-hum section of Rachelville--kind of in the middle of town.....

Update on my water challenge! Doing really well so far. I think I am on to something with this. Whether the filter uses wheat or coconut--for me it dosen't matter--I'm sensitive to both. I hope it keeps up, though--I've had a lot of good false starts before

we will have our own well in the commune....perfect water all the time and no filters!

Patti you won't have to live in the ho-hum section because there won't be one!

Celia--There were a lot of small cracks and holes from taking down pictures and stuff to fill. It's a pretty big room with a bath room and they both have cathedral ceilings. Since we're painting everything from the ceilings down, my husband wants to go thru and make the walls perfect before we paint. He's doing this part all by himself--I'm not in the room at all. When it settles, I'll vaccum and get rid of the bag. I'm also sleeping in the guest room tonight to be safe. Wouldn't it be funny if this spackle had no wheat in it? I don't know (not listed) so I'm playing it safe ;) I actually like to paint--I edge and he rolls :D

Our town definately has to have a fresh water spring!

Ulysses, by Alfred, Lord Tennyson....great poem and totally appropriate!

Ulysses! Of course!!! (slapping forehead) Thanks a million, Susan! :):):)

P.S. Haven't been able to reach my cousin yet.

I love the idea of a fresh water spring....those are extemely hard to come by if the land around them even exists anymore.

I we have sections, we'd be in the double ho-hum side according to most of you.

Patti,

I prefer to roll and my hubby does great with the edging. I always get paint on the ceiling or edging where it's not supposed to be.

Hubby's comment: I agree but is sure does give the room character. :P

As long as you're dressed. :P That's Rachelville's rules.

I do wear dresses and skirts BTW and I dress modestly when I'm out. If you're more comfortable in other things I'm not going to knock you for it (as long as your dressed). I'm definately not into nudist colonies...do those things even still exist? We all need to live with our conscience and try not to offend others at the same time...a delicate balance to say the least.

LMAO!!

all of a sudden I've become a hippie nudist??:lol:

Hehe...I'm definately neither one of those! Remember...I did say I love clothes! Just not the long dresses and bonnets. <_<

They look good on the Mennonites I see at the grocery store....but cant see myself ever wearing anything like that.

I'll stick to my ballcaps and overalls. ;)

We need to live where there is a quality doctor, just in case I get pneumonia again - he he. Can I have my wine cooler in the kitchen. Don't drink it often enough and it stays forever in the cooler.

Did I say that?!:lol: No I'm not Urkel either.

I've always thought the mennonites dress looked neat and tidy.

So let see, I can send you shopping for me right? I hate shopping, unless I can shop online. :o I know, so unlike a girl to not like shopping, but I'm sure you'll recover from the shock.:lol:

My husband and I love to take day/weekend trips to Lancaser, Pa. It is such beautiful country, and a lot of Mennonites and Amish people live there. Their farms are so picturesque--it looks like a painting!

OMG....this is sooo how I picture it in my head!! Well...probably cause thats what I recall it looking like on TV.

I love shopping...can we have our farm within a couple of hours of a shopping mall, lol.

See....now this is where I'm torn. <_< I want the picturesque landscape with the green hills, flowers, and serenity... but then we HAVE to have the mall right on the other side of the hill or I might die!! :o

AndreaB Contributor

Husband (Mitch) narration following:

If you are fortunate enough to live on a farm with a shopping mall in the not to far distance, that would be the ideal thing. You could either have someone else do your shopping or do it yourself. This works well especially around birthdays and christmas. In other words if you have someone else do your shopping it'd be like farming out that task. Or if you do it yourself, you'd be farming out the gifts. So you see, farming and shopping have a lot in common.

My add on:

Mitch drives semi so he can haul back all the stuff you buy.

Mitch's addon: Say...it sounds like farming, shopping and truck driving all have something in common.

go to the "it's official we don't need men any more" thread - - - they are looking for a single fabulous Celiac doctor for me.....I will accept that but would prefer the man to be a single fabulous VETERINARIAN - - maybe we can find both....

Yah, maybe if it's a big hill we won't see the mall and people won't try to infiltrate our cult farm with glutenous thoughts and we can still get our shopping fixes.

Hum, alcohol, well I don't drink much anymore...I'm a cheap date...half a glass and I'm tipsy...we'd better have a "drunk shack" somewhere on the property.

I also hate shopping but there must a good nursery, a Target and a Marshall's or TJ Maxx within 45 minutes, and we won't need to shop for food as we will have an entire team of celiac chefs to not only cook the food but forage for it and BRING it in for us

We'll have computers so we can shop online for everything :)

Getting back to the Amish/Mennonite thing--there's also the Bruderhof (the brotherhood)--a group similar to Mennonites located close to Pittsburgh. They also dress very conservatively, and they seem to place high value on education and the Arts. Many of them take violin lessons (and probably other instruments), and I see them come to Symphony Concerts when we play in their area. The children are always extremely well-behaved, and the older children behave very kindly and responsibly toward the younger children.

I used to have this sort of fantasy about taking my family and staying with one of these groups for a summer to help them with their work in exchange for room and board. I like their work ethic and would love to teach my children about what hard work and self-sufficiency is really like!

Problem #1: We are Jewish, and they may dislike that.

Problem #2: The Amish would certainly not want me visiting them, at least with my violin, as singing hymns is the only music allowed (playing musical instruments is not, it's considered fancy).

Problem #3: Gluten...unless there is a celiac family we could stay with!

But just imagine the life lessons one could learn...

Andrea--your Mitch is a hoot! I think he'd get along great with my husband. Actually sounds like something Mark would have said :D So your husband drives a semi? My older son drives for a national trucking company (not a semi, though) My husband works for the same company--but in the office here in South Jersey.

It's hard to find someone with a sense of humor like Mitch's :P . Mitch's reply...at least I drive a semi and not the good humor trucks. My reply...He drives flatbed locally but it's anywhere from 8-16 hour days. Maybe being on the road all by himself contributes to his sense of humor. We had a church member that has since moved that was right in with him...like two peas in a pod. He was actually best man at our wedding. Mitch's reply...That pea thing, that confirms that farming and trucking have something in common.

Yeah...we defintaley cant have glutenous thoughts invading our nice gluten free, corn free , msg free, sulfite free, casein free cult farm!!

Too much civilization and you never know what could happen. We'll have to keep our cows on leashes or they might wander over to the mall where some teenager may decide it would be great fun to tip them!! Or even worse....feed them gluteney foods!! :o

Those damn teenagers! How dare they!! Maybe we could add some geese to our farm to patrol the boundaries. They're so fierce and mean that our cows would be afraid to wander past them! :P

My dad once threw a knife salesman off our front porch...not nearly as exciting as throwing a rock star off the front porch, but it was all we had, lol.

Oh, Donna, you poor deprived girl, I'm so sorry! :( If only you had lived in Memphis! We had a gracious plenty, enough to go around for sure! :P

I'm so moving to the cult farm when I get back from Australia . I'm not milking any cows, but I guess I'll expose myself to the dangers of the other side of the hill, at least once in a while, to do the shopping...

What a diverse group we have here.... it's so wonderful :) We have all different nationalities, come from all different cultures have different spiritual beliefs and we all get along so well. Most of all we all care about each other.... I'm so proud of us :)

I think it was Ursla that pointed it out a while ago, all of us have gone trhough medical heck to get here, and that serves to bind us as a family.....

Desperately need a vitamin D supplement. I've reacted to most brands I've tried.

Raising you vitamin D will increase absorption of calcium automatically without supplementation of calcium.  A high PTH can be caused by low D causing poor calcium absorption; not insuffient calcium intake.  With low D your body is not absorbing calcium from your food so it steals it from your bones.  Heart has priority over bone. I've been taking 10,000 IU D3 a day since 2015.  My doctor says to continue. To fix my lactose intolerance, lots of lactobacillus from yogurts, and brine fermented pickles and saurkraut and olives.  We lose much of our ability to make lactase endogenosly with maturity but a healthy colony of lactobacillus in our gut excretes lactase in exchange for room and board. The milk protein in grass fed milk does not bother me. It tastes like the milk I grew up on.  If I drink commercial milk I get heartburn at night. Some experts estimate that 90% of us do not eat Adequite Intake of choline.  Beef and eggs are the principle source. Iodine deficiency is a growing concern.  I take 600 mcg a day of Liquid Iodine.  It and NAC have accelerated my healing all over.  Virtually blind in my right eye after starting antihypertensive medication and vision is slowly coming back.  I had to cut out starches because they drove my glucose up into the 200+ range.  I replaced them with Red Bull for the glucose intake with the vitamins, minerals and Taurine needed to process through the mitochodria Krebs Cycle to create ATP.  Went from A1c 13 down to 7.9.  Work in progress. Also take B1,B2,B3,B5,B6. Liquid Iodine, Phosphatidyl Choline, Q10, Selenium, D and DHEA.     Choline supplemented as phosphatidylcholine decreases fasting and postmethionine-loading plasma homocysteine concentrations in healthy men +

@catnapt, Wheat germ has very little gluten in it.  Gluten is  the carbohydrate storage protein, what the flour is made from, the fluffy part.  Just like with beans, there's the baby plant that will germinate  ("germ"-inate) if sprouted, and the bean part is the carbohydrate storage protein.   Wheat germ is the baby plant inside a kernel of wheat, and bran is the protective covering of the kernel.   Little to no gluten there.   Large amounts of lectins are in wheat germ and can cause digestive upsets, but not enough Gluten to provoke antibody production in the small intestines. Luckily you still have time to do a proper gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks) before your next appointment when you can be retested.

Hello, @asaT, I'm curious to know whether you are taking other B vitamins like Thiamine B1 and Niacin B3.  Malabsorption in Celiac disease affects all the water soluble B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Thiamine and Niacin are required to produce energy for all the homocysteine lowering reactions provided by Folate, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine.   Weight gain with a voracious appetite is something I experienced while malnourished.  It's symptomatic of Thiamine B1 deficiency.   Conversely, some people with thiamine deficiency lose their appetite altogether, and suffer from anorexia.  At different periods on my lifelong journey, I suffered this, too.   When the body doesn't have sufficient thiamine to turn food, especially carbohydrates, into energy (for growth and repair), the body rations what little thiamine it has available, and turns the carbs into fat, and stores it mostly in the abdomen.  Consuming a high carbohydrate diet requires additional thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white rice, etc.) don't contain thiamine, so the body easily depletes its stores of Thiamine processing the carbs into fat.  The digestive system communicates with the brain to keep eating in order to consume more thiamine and other nutrients it's not absorbing.   One can have a subclinical thiamine insufficiency for years.  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so the symptoms can wax and wane mysteriously.  Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include stunted growth, chronic fatigue, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi (diarrhea, abdominal pain), heart attack, Alzheimer's, stroke, and cancer.   Thiamine improves bone turnover.  Thiamine insufficiency can also affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is important in bone metabolism.  The thyroid also influences hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, and menopause.  Vitamin D, at optimal levels, can act as a hormone and can influence the thyroid, as well as being important to bone health, and regulating the immune system.  Vitamin A is important to bone health, too, and is necessary for intestinal health, as well.   I don't do dairy because I react to Casein, the protein in dairy that resembles gluten and causes a reaction the same as if I'd been exposed to gluten, including high tTg IgA.  I found adding mineral water containing calcium and other minerals helpful in increasing my calcium intake.   Malabsorption of Celiac affects all the vitamins and minerals.  I do hope you'll talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing all eight B vitamins and the four fat soluble vitamins because they all work together interconnectedly.

Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind
