Oh dear, , fellow Rachelvillians in distress, I am so sorry for you. Of course you all deserve words of kindness and support, the fact that we can't eat what everybody else eats is frustration in itself....a slip-up, whether accidental or intentional......well, spinach happens, no matter how, and unless one of you dear souls just starts eating Krispy Kreme every single day WITHOUT the intent of doing a challenge.....unless you go mad that way and forsake all caution and care, we will always support you.

Robbin, Tavi - - feel better soon..... :( When I go on a Nugget binge I am not well, but sometimes I just can't HELP eating those....3 or 4 is fine, but EIGHTEEN  (yes, Rachel) is not good at all...) Sometimes we just get a little weak, and even eat too much of something that IS okay (like fried green tomatoes - GAWD I WANT THOSE AND HAVE NEVER HAD THEM)

And yes, no more talk of southern food! it's making me crazy....Chelsea I do want to make that fried chicken but don't know how to even fry the dang stuff (don't have a fryer and don't plan on investing, don't have a cast-iron skillet but may get one of those)....I am way too Californian....

No time to write really, just saying hi to all and hoping you all feel better.

Andrea - - what do you mean shaving off time.....at least come when the kids are in bed and share a few thoughts :) !

Thongs....flip-flops.... They used to be called even by another name, a racist (think: Asian) term that my recent ex-boyfriend used, without thinking.....I just cracked up because that's what we called them in the 70's, and I hadn't heard it in years.

Where's Cecile? We need a hurricane update.....

And BTW I am LOVING our multi-use SPINACH word......:lol::lol::lol::lol: Seems to work for just about anything.....

Love to all of you and hoping those among us who are not feeling well will be BETTER SOON!!

EDIT - -

OMG OMG OMG I HAVE FOUND (ALMOST) A GLUTEN-FREE CULT FARM!!!

I just found this link on another thread, we are SO going to this place sometime, this fabulous ranch in Wyoming, for CELIAC WEEK - - - check this out, I'm going next year.......:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I am so excited.....even though I am terrified of horses.....am going.....

Hi everyone!!

Susan you will probably be sorry you asked for the hurricane update.... because I have so much on my mind... I know some are not interested and it's okay... just skip over my posts :)

I'm a little concerned about Chris - it's looks as if it might travel across the state - Francis, the 4 day long hurricane took a somewhat of a similar path. Francis was one of the most powerful hurricanes I have experienced.

When these storms put us in their path - there is panic - everything is closed, the streets become empty and there is not a drop of gas to be found.

Francis was on it's way; we hunkered down.

Friends and family flocked to our home because they were either in a mandatory evac. area, flood zone or in a mobile home. In our 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 800 sq. ft. home we had 10 people, 2 dogs, 1 cat and 1 rabbit. My son and wife couldn't bring their 24 chickens so they secured them the best they could.

We watched TV and listened to the radio of the loss of life and havoc this storm was wreaking as it slowly made it's way toward us.

The intense winds from Fancis started at about 2 in the morning. The noise was so fierce you had to yell to one another to hear each other talk - this went on hour after hour - then day after day. We watched power poles explode like bombs and drop like trees. We watched our lanai crumble and blow away as if it was made of match sticks.

The aftermath - My neighborhood looked like a war zone, widespread damage, debris blanketed the ground, you could not distinguish between street or yard.. We sustained major damage to our house and property but we didn't lose our lives. We had no power, you needed a security pass to enter or exit our county, a curfew was enacted and there was constant canvassing by police in all neighborhoods. With no power, there is no air and the heat was unbearable. The Red Cross arrived, Walmart recieved trucks with water and ice, if you could make it there.

My OCD came in handy so we were very prepared, there was no shortage of food or drink, we made huge pots of chili and stew, enough to feed an army.

Francis had distroyed my childrens chicken coops - the chickens ran free and all perished. My neighbor across the street from me still has a blue tarp on her roof.

Why do I continue to live here? Because above and beyond all this - Florida is my paradise. Am I angry at Mother Natures wrath? No - in life there must always be a balance - just like the fire that warms us can also burn us. No matter where we live, we are all at the mercy of nature and circumstances we have no control over.

I feel better when I write my fears and thoughts on a thread - it's very good therapy for me. I am so lucky to have all of you as my friends.

Miamia - I live in Citrus County, thank you for asking.

Robbin - Jim Cantori is kind of cute :D

Susan - You are BEAUTIFUL!!! Your furry little pals are cute too!!

I respect you for staying where you are - if a place is your home it is so hard to abandon it, it becomes part of who you are.

Robbin, I hope you feel better :)

Cecilia, hang in there. Hopefully Chris will fizzle out and not do the same thing Francis did. I'm glad you shared your worries here in Rachelville, that's what friends are for!

Susan, I LOVE your new picture!

Awwwwwwwww thanks Cecile, but remember, IT"S NOT A CLOSEUP.......like a Monet, anyone can look good from far away....

Oh Dear Cecile, keep on praying.....we will have you in prayer, look at little Megan and ALL the people praying for her.....we don't always get the answer we want, but we do get an answer (yes, no, or wait - not to get theological or anything....) BTW how far from the beach are you? I'll be watching the news, for The storm named Chris - have never known anyone before in hurricane zone!

OMG, I think it's so scary when the OMG thread is on the bottom of page two.... :o:o:o

p.s. who is Jim Cantori and did I miss something????

That's so true, just like all the southern food talk and slang... what's the saying? You can take the girl out of the south but you can't take the south out of the girl :D

I've been here close to 6 years now and there is nowhere else I'd rather be.

I am from New York- and still here and lately I've been wondering if living here- with all the smog and craziness is not hindering my healing process. I told you I was just in Miami for a few days and I could just feel the fresh air had a positive affect on me. I can't imagine leaving New York - but I also feel like I need ot do whatever I can to heal myself- it is such a struggle. New York is such a huge part of who I am.

Hi miamia!

My diet is still going well, knock on wood  Thanks for asking.

Have you tried the kale yet? I am interested in hearing, and how is it going without the spinach?

Hang in there :)

Lisa Mentor

Watching the news for you. Hurricanes are not strange to me either.

On another note:

The new me! As Senator of Rachelville, I have issued a statement that I shall not, nor have any intention, now, or in the future, poop in Rachelville. You have my solumn vow on on this.

Just got a new facelift here, working on the picture part (avatar). Just want to let you know that the rude, controversal he/she, and my latest best friend is no longer here. :) Cheers

PS: Ya'll be careful about posting your e-mail on your personal page. :)

Sorry Robbin, I jumped you post. :)

Hope everyone here is feeling better.

I have cut back on it alot- but am still eating it. I can tolerate brocelli if its cooked well- so I have that at least. I tolerate vegees best if there cooked well. I use them to make pastes and pasta sauces and so on- when there pureed like that they are much easier on my system. I still ahve not done kale yet- but Its definitly on the menu. I am so glad to hear the histamine diet is working for you- that is so great.

What are you eating now?

Miamia

I am sorry, maybe you can live there and visit me alot, then you can have your cake and eat it too.... good gawwwddd all I have are these ol' sayings tonight

Sounds like a plan- as you might have noticed I am chef in rachelville so I can cook for you!!!! I make a good house guest

Hi everyone. Feeling a little better, but brain is fried. I put my dh's dinner in the oven to keep warm since he was going to be late and instead of turning on the oven, I turned on a burner.

I am worried about the hurricane too Celia, and am praying for you and your family to be safe. We have serious heat problems here. I looked out at the thermometer at 3 pm and it said 107. Could barely breathe. Susan and Rachel, you sent that heat out here!!

Tavi, I understand completely--I KNEW that cornmeal was going to do me in, yet I went ahead with it. You are not alone. I hope you can make your concert.

Susan, you can make fried chicken! I made some decent fried chicken the other day and Zack even liked it. :) Check the recipe I posted and let me know if you try it.

Andrea, miss you too!

Mia, how did the greens work out for you, or have you tried them?

Thank you all for the nice words :) Oh, and btw--My oldest, orneriest son called me today!! First time in months, and he was in a good mood! This is a rare occasion, believe me. It really helped today, since I was feeling so spinach-y.

Susan-Love your picture too!! Your posts are so uplifting, I am so happy to be part of this wonderful online family/town. My "near" friends are not nearly as nice and supportive. Maybe celiac causes one to be more sympathetic and caring. It also seems that many of us are very imaginative, creative people. Perhaps because of illness, we become more introspective and imaginative since we spend so much time unable to do much else. :) I am honored to know all of you.

Cecile, you and your family are in my prayers.

Andrea, I hope you will take the time you need to but not stay away too much or for too long.

And hello to everyone.

AndreaB Contributor

Ya, that ranch sounds like a dream to me. And such a beautiful setting. I'd love to move there and work that ranch, oh well. With youngins and not much extra money I don't know when we'd ever be able to do it.

Susan, I also love your picture. I'm assuming Annie (was she the one) is feeling good since, if I understand correctly, she just found an empty bag of nuggets.

Miamia,

I'll still be on, just trying to cut back my time. I've got homeschooling starting in a month and that will take much time since it is 1st grade and we have not only the schoolwork but the schedule to get used to.

Robbin,

Oops, I find myself turning on the wrong burner at times, don't know that I've turned on the burner instead of the oven though. :)

Cecile,

Please keep us posted on Chris. Maybe it will turn or peter out before it gets to you.

Julie,

Glad the diet is working for you. Must be exciting to be able to add a few new foods again.

If I missed anyone sorry and "hi". :D

my new picture makes me look tan, and I am NOT tan, could not get that tan even if I lay on the equator all day long.

robbin - - good to hear from you! So glad your son called....so sorry we sent the heat your way, it's awful, isn't it? We were down to 92 today and I tell you, it felt like SPRING!

Miamia - - the fresh air would do you so good! But, a change like that would be difficult.

Forgot everything else I want to say and the dingos are STARING and STARING - need a walk!

Oh my... I miss good cooking... I suck at cooking... you know you would be welcomed any time :)

Oh MY GOSH, can you believe this place, check out the thread....it really is almost a paradise, gluten free (cult) farm!!! That will be my next vacation, when I have money.....and dog sitters (Julie, gitcherself on out here fer some DINGO-sittin' !!)

Hi Rinne! Nice to see you - - -

Andrea, I think you wrote something - -premature posting , will read now!

I'm assuming Annie (was she the one) is feeling good since, if I understand correctly, she just found an empty bag of nuggets.

Yes it WAS an empty bag, but remember she DID eat 3/4 or more of a bag of Lay's.....so not exactly golden poops but - very bad poops for a couple of days..... :o

p.s.

Plus, my new picture makes it look as though I might have only half a leg - - that is not true either, they are both there......

where's Rachel? do you think she's sickened herself from too much ice cream, lying in a pile of her own spinach???? :P:lol::P:lol::lol::lol:

WOW!!! I am so confused tonight it's not even funny! I have NO idea what's going on in Rachelville tonight.

Momma -- I'm with Susan. Did you change your name? Iam lost.

Cecile -- My prayers for you and your family as Chris approaches the coast. I was getting worried as one of my friends was in the Dominican this week, but I got an email saying he was home safe. I hope you all remain salfe and healthy in the days to come.

Susan -- I don't think it made you look like you only had half a leg. I wish I could figure out how to get my pictures to fit. No matter what I do, they are all to big to let me load an avatar.

Tavi -- Hope you are feeling better this evening.

Any one I missed -- Have a great night, and I will talk to you all tomorrow. I must go pock up my wife from work, and hopefully grab som DQ before the thunder storms start again.

Lisa Mentor

Well..........let's just say that he (who said he was a she) is SPINACH OUT OUT OF HERE!!! Long story.

HA... Susan you are a riot...

Daxin... pull up the picture you want to add into "paint" on your computer, then crop it a bit, make it a little smaller then try to add it. If you need me to do it you can attach your piture in an email and I'll crop and send it back... but I know you'll be able to do it yourself.

Canadian Karen also posted a link the other day to resize photos that was quite good - - wish I had added it to favorites as it is SO many pages back, and you know how we feel about GOING BACK.................. :o:o:o

the dingos are staring so hard at me that I can feel it - - can you guys feel it? it's so intense, I have changed clothes and they know it's time to walk, they are WILLING me with their thoughts...

momma goose - - got it now - - -whew!

AndreaB Contributor
where's Rachel? do you think she's spinached herself into oblivion from too much ice cream??????? :P

Let's see, wasn't it Monday she didn't feel real well? She's probably just having too much fun since she's been feeling better....or maybe she doesn't want to admit that she lost control again :o and ate a quart.....maybe the dairy has gotten to her. Hopefully she'll update us soon.

How long has she been gluten-free, and how old is she? Mine (ADD) has improved by leaps and bounds all the time, and I almost never take the meds (concerta).

That's the problem we have with her current psychiatrist. she hasn't put her on meds, she looks down at the gluten free diet as starving her because she is so picky. It's frustrating.

Mango!!! I can see you again... :D How are you doing?? Don't worry about reading all the pages, let us know how you are making out!!!

Yeah, exactly, it's been mostly goofy stuff here for pages and pages - hardly a science lesson, which means Rachel is feeling fabulous - tell us what's up!!!

I've been buying my seeds and nuts from Prana Organics for a number of years because the products have been GFCO-certified. I just got a new order delivered of their flax and sunflower seeds, and it turns out that they are no longer GFCO-certified. Instead, it just has a generic "Gluten Free" symbol on the package. I reached out to them to ask what protocols/standards/testing they have in place. The person that wrote back said that they are now certifying their gluten free status in-house, but that she couldn't answer my questions related to standards because the person with that info was on vacation. Not very impressed, especially since it still says on their website that they are GFCO-certified. Buyer beware!

Hi @Dizzyma I note what @trents has commented about you possibly posting from the UK.  Just to let you know that am a coeliac based in the UK, so if that is the case, do let me know if can help you with any questions on the NHS provision for coeliacs.    If you are indeed based in the UK, and coeliac disease is confirmed, I would thoroughly recommend you join Coeliac UK, as they provide a printed food and drink guide and also a phone app which you can take shopping with you so you can find out if a product is gluten free or not. But one thing I would like to say to you, no matter where you live, is you mention that your daughter is anxious.  I was always a bit of a nervous, anxious child but before my diagnosis in mid-life my anxiety levels were through the roof.   My anxiety got steadily better when I followed the gluten-free diet and vitamin and mineral deficiencies were addressed.  Anxiety is very common at diagnosis, you may well find that her anxiety will improve once your daughter follows a strict gluten-free diet. Cristiana

Welcome to the celic.com community @Dizzyma! I'm assuming you are in the U.K. since you speak of your daughter's celiac disease blood tests as "her bloods".  Has her physician officially diagnosed her has having celiac disease on the results of her blood tests alone? Normally, if the ttg-iga blood test results are positive, a follow-up endoscopy with biopsy of the small bowel lining to check for damage would be ordered to confirm the results of "the bloods". However if the ttg-iga test score is 10x normal or greater, some physicians, particularly in the U.K., will dispense with the endoscopy/biopsy. If there is to be an endoscopy/biopsy, your daughter should not yet begin the gluten free diet as doing so would allow healing of the small bowel lining to commence which may result in a biopsy finding having results that conflict with the blood work. Do you know if an endoscopy/biopsy is planned? Celiac disease can have onset at any stage of life, from infancy to old age. It has a genetic base but the genes remain dormant until and unless triggered by some stress event. The stress event can be many things but it is often a viral infection. About 40% of the general population have the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% actually develop celiac disease. So, for most, the genes remain dormant.  Celiac disease is by nature an autoimmune disorder. That is to say, gluten ingestion triggers an immune response that causes the body to attack its own tissues. In this case, the attack happens in he lining of the small bowel, at least classically, though we now know there are other body systems that can sometimes be affected. So, for a person with celiac disease, when they ingest gluten, the body sends attacking cells to battle the gluten which causes inflammation as the gluten is being absorbed into the cells that make up the lining of the small bowel. This causes damage to the cells and over time, wears them down. This lining is composed of billions of tiny finger-like projections and which creates a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients from the food we eat. This area of the intestinal track is where all of our nutrition is absorbed. As these finger-like projections get worn down by the constant inflammation from continued gluten consumption before diagnosis (or after diagnosis in the case of those who are noncompliant) the efficiency of nutrient absorption from what we eat can be drastically reduced. This is why iron deficiency anemia and other nutrient deficiency related medical problems are so common in the celiac population. So, to answer your question about the wisdom of allowing your daughter to consume gluten on a limited basis to retain some tolerance to it, that would not be a sound approach because it would prevent healing of the lining of her small bowel. It would keep the fires of inflammation smoldering. The only wise course is strict adherence to a gluten free diet, once all tests to confirm celiac disease are complete.

Hi all, I have so many questions and feel like google is giving me very different information. Hoping I may get some more definite answers here. ok, my daughter has been diagnosed as a coeliac as her bloods show anti TTG antibodies are over 128. We have started her  on a full gluten free diet. my concerns are that she wasn’t actually physically sick on her regular diet, she had tummy issues and skin sores. My fear is that she will build up a complete intolerance to gluten and become physically sick if she has gluten. Is there anything to be said for keeping a small bit of gluten in the diet to stop her from developing a total intolerance?  also, she would be an anxious type of person, is it possible that stress is the reason she has become coeliac? I read that diagnosis later in childhood could be following a sickness or stress. How can she have been fine for the first 10 years and then become coeliac? sorry, I’m just very confused and really want to do right by her. I know a coeliac and she has a terrible time after she gets gluttened so just want to make sure going down a total gluten free road is the right choice. thank you for any help or advise xx
