Emotional Reaction From Gluten? Do You Get This?

Ok, so I had a little incident tonight (see the post about rude people and notes on cars) and I was glutened last night by a chip at a resturaunt....and I am really feeling the effects....but now I am wondering if the glutening could be adding to the emotional rollercoster I am going through. Part of me wants to find whoever wrote that note and hit them. Part of me wants to buy a new car now (so they cant find me or something.....it isnt a rational thought). Part of me is crying (the physical part, LOL). I am a mess. I don't think I would be like this if not for the gluten........anyone else get like this? I am so upset, and on top of it, I am running to the bathroom for d. Ug, this sucks........

Tiffany,

Sorry for your troubles - you have been thrown into a bit of a tailspin over this, haven't you?! Don't let em get you down. You didn't do anything wrong. You just feel guilty because you probably don't normally do that, and the one time you do..., well, look what happens. The parking note was uncalled for and left by someone who is insensitive and has their own issues. You know what, person who left the parking note? This is life. $tuff happens! Your parking note person needs to learn to deal with it. <edited to clarify that my comment was directed to the person who left the note - not you!>

I know what you are feeling because that is how I react to such things, and that is what I need to learn to tell myself all the time. I don't attribute it to gluten. I just always thought I was hypersensitve and too introspective. My family always told me I needed to develop a thicker skin. Easier said than done.

Anyway, try turning the tables on your thoughts. It's not you with the problem - it's the one who left the note. Why do they think it is their job to tell other people how to live and that others must live by their interpretation of the rules?

Maybe that will help a little.

Oh yeah, did I ever have the emotional roller coaster rides when glutened. Even a little bit of cross-contamination can put me in a depressed tail spin. (Almost as bad as being a teenaged girl again!) I don't miss them. I think it's more of the psychological aspects of being glutened that keep me on the straight and narrow than the physical. I have learned to ride it out as there is nothing to do for it anyways. Develop a mantra "it's the gluten, not me" You will come out of this so long as you are gluten-free, so hang in there!

Heck, situations like that put me on the emotional rollercoaster even without gluten!

I think your reaction is totally normal. By leaving anote on your windshield, that person invaded your personal space. That's definitely alittle scary. He or she directed rage at you when you did absolutely nothing wrong--of course that isn't fair and makes you feel beaten down, and then justifiably angry.

Now you're stuck having to let it run its course. It will run its course in a few days' time or less. There are some things you can do to help it exit your system a little faster. Venting here is good!

What helps me is exercise and fresh air. Go for a good long walk in the park if it's not raining, or go tothe mall and walk there. Swing your arms--my physical therapist says that swinging your arms releases endorphins!

Do something unusually nice for total strangers (and, I suppose, for people you know!). Drop off some toys at the local children's hospital. Let someone with 3 items in front of you on the grocery store line. Offer to take a cart back to the store for an elderly lady. Be the total opposite of the jerk who left the note on your windshield. It'll help put balance back in your universe, and it will keep the jerks from controlling you (i.e., forcing you into being angry and upset all day). It feels much nicer to be nice than to be angry!

If you are religious at all, but don't like religious institutions, all hospitals have a little non-denominational chapel where you can go talk to God without any clergypeople interrupting you. Or, conversely, you might feel better talking to a priest, minister, or rabbi.

Pets are very therapeutic, too. If you don't have one, yuou could go to your local animal shelter--they usually need volunteers to help walk the dogs. You'd be doing a good deed for the dog and getting exercise!

REPEAT: YOU DID NOTHING WRONG. YOUR REACTION IS NORMAL. :)

Hang in there, it does get better.

Hi Tiffany--I'm so sorry you're going through all of this right now! I know exactly how you feel--I am a very sensitive person--on a good day. Add gluten *and* a situation like the one you had with your truck, and I would be reacting the same way! Really--I understand taking things to heart that way. The gluten makes it even worse because, for me at least, it brings back the depressed and anxious feelings for a few days. The only advice I can offer is what I would tell myself--try to relax and not think about it. (easier said than done, I know!) Focus on other things--even mundane everyday things that need to be taken care of. After a time, you'll be able to look back and see the whole thing without getting so emotional. I think we are kindred spirits--sending a hug to you ;)

Ditto to that. Getting emotional for no reason is about the 3rd symptom I have of glutening. Brain fog, face goes numb, and then I get depressed.

And I'm overly sensitive on a good day!!!

Tiffany-YES!!!!!!! I absolutely have an emotional reaction to gluten. I posted at the beginning of the week about the depression. I think it is deffinantly a chemical reaction to the gluten for me. I get very irritable, impatient, depressed, ect.....

Alot of people recommended trying B-complex to counter the effect of the gluten. I went right out to whole foods and bought one with probiotics and it really has helped me! You might want to look at that posting for the advice I got!!!!

I hope you feel better- and you are not alone!!!!

Oh heck ya!

The best way to describe me when I get glutened is "The Incredible Hulk". I can explode in anger at the drop of a hat!

Hugs and hope you feel better today,

I have a similar response--I wouldn't say that I get actual clinical depression (i.e. tell-tale symptoms that last for over two weeks), but I do get very emotional--sometimes weepy, sometimes very angry. I've tried to work on the anger lately because I still want people to like me when I emerge from my emotional gluten-induced haze, but, at the same time, I don't want to turn that anger inward.

I was doing so well not getting glutened for a while, but I've been on several business trips where I've been unavoidably at the mercy of people bussers, waitresses, linecooks and other people who don't understand the subtleties of cross contamination. I finally just had to stop eating meals with the groups and go back to a hotel room full of food from Whole Foods. I just try as much as possible to focus on other things that are more important and then I try to reward myself when I do well. It's never fun to deal with the physical or mental side effects of gluten contamination.

Ok, so I started this post about being emotional, and now, I am crying and shaking. But I don't even know if I should post that. If you are keeping up with the back and forth on the parking post, someone is being really ON me and I just can't handle it right now. I am a friendly, nice person, who can normally let things roll off of my back, but not now. I am soooo emotional. And what this person is saying is getting me SO upset, and I don't understand it. I thought that this was a safe place to vent and rant. I wish I had my husband here to cry to but he is in Iraq. And don't start in about everyone having problems. I know that. Everyone knows that. But sometimes those of us here understand that our special diet makes us even more sensitive to everyday problems...........ok, I dont even know where I am going with this......I just need to talk, and I don't have anyone at home with me and I cant stop crying. I sound pathetic now. I will stop.

Yeah I know what you mean :( I'm starting to think that the emotional effects of gluten are as bad as the physical! I made egg rolls on Monday night...and ate left overs on Tuesday. I know the egg rolls are fine, but I used an over the counter sweet and sour sauce to dip them in. I have been fooling myself for too long now, that I'm not affected by distilled products. I called the company with the sweet and sour sauce and was told it was not gluten-free because of the distilled vinigar. I disregarded that info because (although I get sick after eating something that is gluten-free through distillation.....vinager, whiskey, mcdonalds fries....ok I guess mcdonalds fries used some other process, but I still got sick) I thought "OH that won't bother me"! Well, it did. Sure enough I've been snapping at my poor hubby, then feeling guilty and weepy, then wondering if he still loves me (this only happens when I'm glutened) Today I just wanted to stay in bed and hide under the covers. I was awake all last night and I feel awful. UGH...I swear that's it with my distilled vinager experiments!

Hey, I just read your latest post....I skimmed over what is happing over there and it looks like something just to walk away from. Here lately it seems like there has been a lot of hostility on the board....must be the gluten :P Just step away from it for a while...it's not worth it.

Yup. (period, the end, I am done, please dont respond, leave me alone, I quit)

Actually when I am glutened I am so sick I can't be upset. However, for you it could have been a combination of gluten, weather, and all the other stuff.

The things that make me more than emotional, even violent are certain allergies and one is to cigarette/cigar smoke. Not only do they make it so I can't breath but cigar and certain cigarette smoke, just a whiff makes me violent. I have to leave or I may sock someone in the nose.

Hey guys,

I am a gemini and have pernicious anemia, and (I think) celiac disease. Plus am a woman, with the typical PMS mood-swings, plus am a single mom....plus plus plus....

Welcome to the emotional roller-coaster ride! I feel a bit happier and "even-tempered" off of gluten though - so of course, from now on I will be "blaming it on gluten" or on my brand new favorite scientific phenomenon "delayed lunar reaction"...

But sometimes laughter is the best medecine - so don't know if you read my email in the now defunct parking thread - but:

1. Wave your arms in the air and push away the negative energy some people give off and try to pass onto you - send it back out into the universe in a symbolic "back to sender" gesture. I garantee you will immediately feel better, if not from having pushed away the negative energy, then from how silly you look and feel actually waving your arms around like a mad woman - and if you do it around co-workers, them laughing at you will make you laugh too!!!

or

2. Go read my posts on "gas 101" in the symptoms thread (sorry am a thread-pasting virgin, dunno how to do it yet) . Garantee it will make you giggle, especially if you turn your volume on really loud. If you have kids they will laugh HYSTERICALLY. :o

Sending out the good vibes! Woohoooo!

;)

I just re-read what I posted to tiff earlier......I told her to step away for a while and leave it alone. I hope she knows I was talking about that particular thread and not the board in general  After re-reading I see that it could have been taken that way. I didn't mean to make her think that she should leave the group or anything!

Let's see if we can get being "glutened" and "delayed lunar response" accepted in a court of law for murder. Kind of like temporary insanity. Alright girls let's go run over dear John with the John Deere. Remember the gluten made me do it along with delayed lunar response.

I was pm-ing her through the "incident", and I'm pretty sure she'll be back to the boards. She just was upset and stepping away from the thread for a while.

Tiffany, let us know that you are okay. Because we are worried as you are so upset. There are lots of things that are probably upsetting you along with gluten, weather, your husband not being there and some of the left overs from the other thread. So, just try to wash that other thread out of your head.

I Pm'd her too and told her about my experiences along the lines of the one she is having in her other thread. I think she's OK.

Well, we have that down pat! :D We take vietnamese rice paper and brush it with egg. Then we wrap up ground pork, cabbage, bean sprouts, gluten-free soy sauce, and corn starch in them. After that we dip them in a VERY thin batter made from eggs, rice flour, corn starch and milk. Then deep fry till brown...mmmmmm.....they are good. I usually make my own sweet and sour sauce too, but I was lazy this time. I guess I got what I deserve....it's so easy too.....just rice vinegar, sugar, and soy sauce.

I Pm'd her too and told her about my experiences along the lines of the one she is having in her other thread. I think she's OK.

I'm glad! I think this board is the best place for people with celiac disease to be. I don't know where I would be if it wasn't for the advice I have recieved here. I would never intentionally tell someone to leave

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/

Hi, @Ginger38, I've had shingles in the past.  I understand how miserable you're feeling.   Not only do i have the chickenpox virus lurking about, I also have the cold sore virus that occasionally flares with a huge cold sore on my lip when stressed or exposed to gluten.  The virus lives dormant in the nerves on the left side of my face.  It causes Bell's Palsy (resulting in drooling).  The cold sore virus is also in my eye.  My eye swells up and my vision is diminished permanently whenever I have a flare, so it's of the utmost importance to keep flares away and treat them immediately if they do happen so I don't lose any more vision.   I take the amino acid supplement L-Lysine.  Lysine messes with the replication of viruses, which helps the body fight them off.   I haven't had an outbreak for several years until this year when exceptionally stressed and contaminated, it flared up again. Lysine has been shown to be beneficial in suppression of viruses like the cold sore virus (a herpetic virus), the chickenpox virus (also a herpetic virus), as well as the HIV virus, and even the Covid virus.   I also take additional Thiamine in the form TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) because Thiamine has antiviral properties as well.   For pain, a combination of Thiamine (like TTFD or Benfotiamine or Thiamine Hydrochloride), with B12 Cobalamine, and Pyridoxine B6 have been shown to have analgesic properties which relieve pain and neuropathy.    The combination of Thiamine B1, Pyridoxine B6 and Cobalamine B12 really does work to relieve pain.  I take it for back pain from crushed vertebrae in my back.  This combination also works on other pain and neuropathy.   I usually buy a supplement that combines all three and also Riboflavin B2 called EXPLUS online.  However, it's made in Japan and the price with the tariffs added makes it really expensive now.  But the combination of Thiamine B1, Pyridoxine B6 and B12 Cobalamine (and Riboflavin B2) still work even if taken separately.   I can't take Tylenol or ibuprofen because of stomach upsets.  But I can take the vitamin combination without side effects.  However, you can take the three vitamins at the same time as other pain relievers for added benefit.  The vitamins help other pain relievers work better. I hope you will try it.  Hopeful you'll feel better quickly. Interesting Reading: Thiamine, cobalamin, locally injected alone or combination for herpetic itching: a single-center randomized controlled trial https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23887347/ Mechanisms of action of vitamin B1 (thiamine), B6 (pyridoxine), and B12 (cobalamin) in pain: a narrative review https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35156556/ Analgesic and analgesia-potentiating action of B vitamins https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12799982/ A Narrative Review of Alternative Symptomatic Treatments for Herpes Simplex Virus https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10301284/

I think, after reading this, that you areso traumatized by not being able yo understand what your medical advisors have been  what medical conditions are that you would like to find a group of people who also feel traumatized who would agree with you and also support you. You are on a crusade much as the way the US Cabinet  official, the Health Director of our nation is in trying to change what he considers outdated and incorrect health advisories. He does not have the education, background or experience to be in the position he occupies and is not making beneficial decisions. That man suffered a terrible trauma early in his life when his father was assonated. We see now how he developed and worked himself into a powerful position.  Unless you are willing to take some advice or  are willing to use a few of the known methods of starting on a path to better health then not many of us on this Celiac Forum will be able to join you in a continuing series of complaints about medical advisors.    I am almost 90 years old. I am strictly gluten free. I use 2 herbs to help me stay as clear minded as possible. You are not wrong in complaining about medical practitioners. You might be more effective with a clearer mind, less anger and a more comfortable life if you would just try some of the suggestions offered by our fellow celiac volunteers.

Thus has got to STOP , medical bit believing us! I literally went through 31 years thinking it was just a food allergy as its downplayed by medical if THEY weren't the ones who diagnosed us! Im positive for HLA-DQ2 which is first celiac patient per Iran and Turkey. Here in the States especially in Cali its why do you feel that way? Why do you think your celiac? Your not eating gluten so its something else.Medical caused me depression. I thought I was safe with my former pcp for 25 years considering i thought everything I went through and going through will be available when I get fired again for health. Health not write-ups my health always come back when you're better.Im not and being tossed away at no fault to my own other than shitty genes.I was denied disability because person said he didn't know how to classify me! I said Im celiac, i have ibs, hernia, sciatica, high blood pressure, in constant pain have skin and eye issues and menopause intensified everything. With that my celiac nightmare began to reprove my disregarded disease to a bunch of clowns who think they are my careteam when they said I didn't have...I feel Im still breathing so I can fight this so no body else has to deal with this nightmare. Starting over with " new care team" and waisting more time on why I think I am when diagnosed in 1994 before food eliminated from my diet. P.s everything i went through I did write to medical board, so pretty sure I will continue to have a hard time.
