At Last, I'm Feeling Better!

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share my good news. I have been gluten-free

since Nov.1, 2003 and this is the day that I have been waiting,

praying for. I feel better, I have no pain, nausea, gas, or brain

fog. I saw the Gastro Doc last week. He told me that my biopsy

was negative, my villi are not damaged, but my IgA had been 74.

He had told me previously that I had only a wheat allergy, now

he is leaning towards Celiac Sprue, saying "I can't prove you

have it and can't prove you don't!" He recommended that I

try some gluten, pizza or spaghetti, since I have been gluten-free

and dairy free since last year. I took his advice and ate 4 slices

of white bread in 3 days. At the end of the 3rd day my eyes

started to bother me, burning and itching. It was then I determined

that I would be Gluten Free for the rest of my life. I just wanted

to share this with you, because I feel like I have come back

from Hell and I never want to be that sick again! I just want all

of you who are new to this disease to know that there is a light at the

end of the tunnel.I have also lost 8 lbs after I gave up red meat.

At the present time I eat brown rice, potatoes, veggies, gluten-free pancakes.

fruit, goat's milk, and lots of water.

Congratulations Judy. That is wonderful news. How long did it take after you went gluten-free before you started noticing improvement? Keep up the good work and thanks for the encouragement. Hugs, Carol B (who is waiting for airborn to pick up my stool sample)

Kalo,

It took me 3-4 months before I could feel a difference

because I kept getting sick, I finally stopped eating

dairy and tomatoes. Hope you soon find answers

and keep coming to this board, it has been a

godsend for me!

Thanks Judy. When my doctor put me on this diet and decided to test me I asked him how long before I knew I was on the right track. He said 3 weeks. But then a gal on one of my groups told me she knew several people who took 3 months before they new. So, I'm lookinig to enterolabs which I've done on my own to tell me for sure. I've been on this for 2 weeks but I know I've had some miss haps eating out. When it comes back positive which I'm hoping it does I will have to get realy strict and totally figure this out. No I don't feel better yet but I wasn't expecting to. Keep us posted on how you are doing. Definately ENCOUREGING (spell?). Hugs, Carol B

(stool test was picked up this afternoon. YEA! I don't think I've ever been this excited and I've been through a lot of different diagnosis)

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
