The schools serve Pizza Hut Pizza for lunch. My daughter is going to have a hard time in middle school watching all her friends eat pizza.

That would piss me off, gluten-free or not! So much for ending childhood obesity, eh? I would get the PTA together and lobby against that contract!

I'm Hungry Newbie

The Krispy Kreme Burger.....that was something that the comedian Jim Gaffigan predicted would happen - he's HILLARIOUS, you should check him out. He makes fun of America's obsession with foods and mixing different foods. He makes a lot of fun of the Hot Pocket. I can't even tell you how funny he is - and sadly, what he makes fun of are true things that we do.

The krispy kreme burger (EEEEEEEEEWWWW) is not a new thing, it's been around at least a year. It's called the Luther Burger after Luther Vandross. Open Original Shared Link

Shortly after I went gluten-free (like the very next week, I think) the store I work in put up a bunch of huge sticker-advertisement things on the floor of every aisle. The one in my aisle said "Without bread, they would just be pulled-pork HANDWICHES. Eat more bread!" Way to taunt the sick girl. I have *no idea* who cut it to pieces and picked at the edges until it was gone.

I do't know about the US, but Pizza Hut actually do gluten-free pizza here - you just have to take your own pizza base along (which we can get on prescription) and they cook them separately. It's not the same though - I dotn like teh taste of gluten-free pizza bases or gluten-free bread at all, its better as toast. There is a pizzeria - a proper one which make gluten-free bases from rice and potato flour specially for coeliacs in Lancaster in England, which were really gorgeous, and really thin and crispy like proper pizzas, and they cooked them in a separate oven and in trays to avoid CC - it was brilliant. Unfortunately, I am no longer livivng there sicne finishing my degree, so am abck to eating at Damon's american diner in Lincolcn, which is also nice and has a special coeliac menu, btu unfortunately doesnt do pizza.

With any hope though Pizza Hut may start doign this in the US too...

I'm really starting to miss gluten foods. When I first started this diet, just the thought of them made me feel sick, but now that is starting to change. I'm craving things that I never liked before; like Pizza Hut pizza (we always bought ours from a local take-and-bake because Pizza Hut pizza was so greasy and fat-filled). I've started dreaming about food (both gluten-filled and gluten-free) on a constant basis. About two weeks ago, I had a dream that I was driving past Pizza Hut and I saw a big sign that announced that they had added a gluten-free pizza to their menu. So, I went in and had the best pizza ever; it tasted like normal pizza, only better. Last night I dreamed about a gluten-free wedding cake that fell to pieced when it was cut <_< . I guess those dreams show show what my brain thinks about gluten and gluten-free foods.

maybe you were just really hungry before you went to bed? :P

The girls and I have had great success with corn tortilla pizzas, you use the corn tortilla as the crust, put on some tomato paste and top it with whatever toppings you like (like pepperoni, bell peppers, and black olives) they taste close to pizza and are gluten free (if you get the right ingredients)

I am not much of a baker, so I have been afraid to try to make pizza crust..........

Seriously. I remember when I was in high school (I graduated 3 yrs ago) and along with the cafeteria, there were lunch carts that sold lots of different foods (some healthy, some not). Almost everyday, my friends would order a piece of Pizza Hut pizza, a huge cinnamon roll (it was 6" by 6" and 3 " tall), a candy bar, and a soda. Maybe 2 times a month they would switch pizza for chicken nuggets or nachos. My friends weren't alone; almost all the students ate like this (I always brought lunch from home). It's no wander that alomst all of my friends were/are overweight.

That sounds good! I might try that tonight. Thanks for the idea!!!!! I tried making my own pizza crust 1 time, and it was awful. I was eating Amy's rice crust pizza, but I can't have dairy anymore. I've heard Chebe makes a good pizza crust, but I'm afraid that I'll mess it up, so I haven't tried it yet.

I occasionally crave pizza (I think I actually whimpered last night watching a Round Table Pizza ad) but the Pizza Hut ads make me nuts. I mean, now, in order to encourage people to "eat their pizza" they have to stuff the crust with cheese and make it so you can snap it off and DIP IT into something? WTF??? I mean, it's just crummy PIZZA folks! Geez! "Better get every last bite!" Barf.

It's not like it's actually good for anyone... all that trans fat, refined flour, corn syrup sauce, etc.

(I know, some of it does taste good!)

I sometimes do the tortilla pizzas also. I make them in the toaster oven so I don't have to heat up the whole house.

Take 1st tortilla lay it on the pan, top with cheese, then top with another tortilla. Spread sauce over the top, add toppings, and more cheese. Bake until crispy and meltey....I think that the 2 tortilla version makes it very crispy.

That Krispy Kreme hamburger sounds almost as gross as the new pizza sandwich at 7-11. They take two slices of cold pizza and use that instead of bread on a sandwich with all sorts of lunch meats, lettuce, mustard, mayo.... yuck!

OMG.. I can so relate. I have been craving that stupid KFC mashed potatoes thingy too. I never craved KFC before (until I was pregnant). I think about that and Big Macs alot now. I agree with all those commercials too.. everything crispy and fried.. darn them! I am going to try the suggestion about making my own gluten free junk food.. i need buffalo chicken strips.. ahhh.. there i go hungry again

I used to work at 5-10 different Pizza Huts as a travelling shift manager. Guys, you're not missing out on anything. There are so many gross things that go on in places like those that I consider myself lucky that I can't eat it anymore. At our one store we used to get food poisoning complaints practically on a weekly basis. This wasn't a nasty, dirty, big-city restaurant either. This was one of the award winning red roofs in a small, clean town. Just the thought of Pizza Hut grosses me out now that I don't work there anymore. I hope I never have to smell stale vegetable oil and moldy cheese ever again. Ick...

This is the kind of talk we like. I often wonder what they are doing in those kitchens. Makes me feel better to think this way when I am cooking and cleaning up. LindaLee

I know just what you mean...I hate the Krispy Kreme doughnut people. They came out with their doughnuts after my diagnosis--i never got to try them

i hate it too, i was talking to a friend the other day about this who is also celiac, and weve took an oath together of throwing our shoes at the tv at the next commercail that comes on, one day im gonna say bugger it im haveing it and it scares me cos i guess this is what a recovering alcholic feels like, dont mean to get up anyones back here but its still about wanting something you shouldnt have that is gonna make you ill after right ?

:) I can relate to this thread. Pizza Hut commercials are the worst for me. I think the cheese more than the gluten. When I want something that is bad for me, I think of it as "ex-husband" moments. Like after the break-up, he looks sexier and so great and you forget how CRAPPY he treated you. (Pun intended) :)

This guy is the funniest comedian EVER! I couldn't breath I was laughing so hard about his hot pockets routine. I loved it. I wish I could see him live. Ellen often talks about how when they serve pizza by the time you get it you're so hungry you shove the first piece in your mouth only to burn the roof of your mouth with the chesse....everytime. Sorry I don't miss it.

I was never that impressed by Krispy Kreme. I always thought thier donuts were weak, and didn't understand what the fuss was. They made my stomach hurt too, lol.

I see these commercials (on mute, because I refuse to listen) and the only thing I can think is "this is why america is overweight" and I just get grossed out by the junk food. I have noticed lately that EVERY food commercial is something that's absolutly nothing I can have, but it doesn't bother me, other than making me kind queasy just looking at it.

I tried the corn tortilla pizza thing, though I used the microwave and just put cheese pepperoni, olives and a little salsa, and it was GOOD. I had avoided it, because I thought it was wierd, but it totally worked for pizza craving without the work. I eat very tiny servings, so I spend an hour making a pizza and then eat one slice, its kinda silly.

I reccomend the yellow corn tortillas, I like them better for this than the white for some reason, but I would have this on hand for the next pizza craving. 2 minutes in the kitchen, and 40 seconds in the microwave, and you're taken care of.

I miss Krispy Kreme's sooooooooo bad!!! When I was little, my parents used to take me and my sister to Krispy Kreme when the "hot donuts" light was on, and OMG!!! Nothin like it to create a life long addiction! That is the one thing that I have not been able to find a suitable gluten-free substitute for...

oh I've tried the corn tortilla pizza thing too, was pretty yummy, but my family looked at me like I was weird

Krispy Kreme donuts never have been a big deal to me. In fact I had only heard of them a few years ago, as they werent a NJ thing. Then they come in and build the first Krispy Kreme in NJ right in my town. Needless to say... they have closed their doors forever. Out of business. Guess NJ doesnt like Krispy Kremes that much. We can still get them boxed like an Entenmenns, but that is the only way.

I almost hate the new Subway ads more than pizza hut. I never did like PH pizza, but am a big fan of sub sandwiches. Especially the toasted kind (several chains come to mind here).

DW makes me some gluten-free bread at home to have my toasted sandwiches on, but deep down I know they're not quite the same.

Hummingbird-Hill Newbie

I miss Good Italian Bread smothered with garlic butter and then toasted under the broiler. I had my sister bring me Italian bread when I lived in Hawaii. They didn't have it. And I also miss Pizza, thin crust with lots and lots of cheese, the kind that burns the top of your mouth if you eat it too quickly. :D

Oh my gosh! Me too! I HATE commercials. In my area, it is either for food, or a car dealer. And they are so much louder than the show, so I am always muting it, and then missing the first few seconds of my show because I look away to do something else.

Anyway, I, too, have been hating the Pizza Hut (are they the ones doing Stuffed Crust? or is that Domino's?) commercials. Especially since my hubby is home right now and he likes pizza and he has ordered it once while he was home (with my blessing, hey, he is only here for a little while, but man, it really smelled good. I had to lock myself in the bedroom). He has been REALLY GREAT about my gluten-free meals though, and with that small exception (and the cookies and cream icecream in the freezer) he has let me keep the apartment totally gluten-free.

But those d@mned commercials. They make me want to cheat, or throw something at the tv.

I worked at Pizza Hut for two years in high school and ate pizza every day (usually only if I made it...) Lately, I've been craving some breadsticks with cheese... and stuffed crust pizza... Loved stuffed crust. I haven't tried any of the pizza dough mixes, but I want to try to make one. They just use string cheese and fold it over.

Also, I have a tortilla pizza suggestion. I like to make mexican pizzas. I put refried beans on the tortilla then veggies (onions, green peppers, jalapenos, etc.) or just salsa. Top it all off with Cheddar cheese and bake it until it's nice and gooey. Hmmm... i might go make one now... :)

I just recently saw something on this.  Has anyone tried test strips?  Which brand is better?  Not sure how they really work and if they really do work.  Thank you, Nancy (aka Borky)

Hello @Midwesteaglesfan and welcome. A result greater than 10 U/mL is considered positive. Some labs use 15 as the cutoff, but 34 is in the positive.  The endoscopy and biopsy is looking for damage to your small intestine.  I don't don't think 5 days is enough to repair the damage. This comment is effectly your answer, regardless of your biopsy results.  The endoscopy has been the Gold Standard diagnostic, and most healthcare providers won't diagnose celiac disease until your intestinal lining Marsh Score reaches stage 3. You don't really want to wait for the damage to get worse, especially since only five days mostly gluten free gave you relief.  Yes, migranes is one of the 200 symptoms that may be caused by Celiac Disease. Malabsorption Syndrome is often comorbid with celiac disease.  The western diet is deficient in many vitamins and minerals.  That's why gluten processed foods are fortified.  Gluten free processed foods are not; Vitamin D deficiency is a virtual given.  40 to 60% of the industrial population is deficient in vitamin D, Damage to the intestinal lining from celiac disease can decrease the number of vitamin D receptors.  So now you get no vitamin D from the sun (skin cancer scare) the major source of vitamin D, plus absorbtion from food is poor because of intestinal damage.   Low iodine intake is getting more of a concern because the major source of iodine used to be bread (dough conditioner with iodine was stopped in the US in the 1970s), dairy (lactose intolerance from eating quick pickles with vinegar instead of fermented pickles which supply lactase excreting lactobacillus to improve Lactose intolerance. Commercial Dairies have wheat, barley and rye added to the cow feed. Some say they are sensitive to milk protein, but it is the gluten added to supplement the cow feed to increase milk production that becomes part of the milk protein causing the problem.  And people use less iodized salt.  In the US intake of iodine dropped 50% from 1970 to 1984. Switch to Grass fed only milk and consider supplementing Liquid Iodine drops to your diet.  The omega 6 to omega 3 ratio of commercial milk is 5:1; Organic milk is 3:1 and grass fed milk is 1:1. The typical western diet is around 14:1, optimum for humans is 1:1.  Wheat flour is 22:1 omega 6:3.  Choose vegetables lower in omega 6, it is inflammatory. Eat fermented foods and switch to Grass fed only milk.  Some say they are sensitive to milk protein, but it is the gluten added to supplement the cow feed to increase milk production that becomes part of the milk protein.

At 41 years old I have been fighting fatigue and joint pain for a couple months.  My family doctor kept saying nothing was wrong but I was insistent that I just didn’t feel right.  Finally after running several blood labs, one came back showing inflammation in my body and I was referred to a rheumatologist.  He was extremely thorough and sat with me and my family for a good hour asking questions and listening. He ordered X-rays of all my joints and more bloodwork.  He suspected some sort of reactive inflammatory arthritis.  My TTG (Tissue Transglutaminase) came back at 34. he told me to try going gluten free and out me on Salfasalzin to help the join inflammation.  Over the next couple days going gluten free and doing a lot of research and talking to people with celiacs,  we found that I should have an upper endoscopy for insurance purposes in the future.  I reached back out to my rheumatologist and expressed this concern and he got back to me stating I was correct and resume regular gluten diet and stop the medication until after that scope.     They were able to schedule me in for 2 days later.  I had been gluten free, or as close to it as I could be for about 5 days.  I know I ate some brats with it but wanted to use them up.  My symptoms had gotten slightly better in those 5 days.  I felt less fatigue and joint pain was slightly better(it had gotten really bad) so for these last 2 days I’ve gone crazy with wheat bread, pasta and such.  I’m hoping those 5 days didn’t screw this endoscopy up.  I can’t imagine after a life of gluten, my intestines healed in 5 days and after eating gluten again for these couple days,  my stomach hurts, joint pain is coming back up so I know the inflammation is there.   Hinesight after this diagnosis, I have had chronic migraines since my late teens.  Has that been a lingering symptom of celiacs all these years?  I’ve never really had the stomach issues, for me it came in heavy these last couple months as the fatigue, just always feeling tired and exhausted.  And the joint pain.     So getting in the car for the 2 hour drive to the hospital for this scope now.     Wish me luck!
