I am freaking out here. I am doing so bad about my sons diet. At least that is how I feel. He is basically gluten-free. I find a few things every now and again that are not gluten-free that I am giving him. like today my neighbor made us rice Crispie treats. Then come to find out that are made with malt flavoring. Is this gluten???? He LOVES that cereal and I have been giving it to him all the time. ArgggHHH!!

Help!

Taffy :(

Malt is made from barley. So Rice Krispies are NOT gluten-free nor is anything else that has malt or malt flavoring. There is a gluten-free type of rice krispie cereal but I cannot remember the name. Does anyone else know?

I think it is made with barley malt flavoring. You should call the company to see if they will tell you.

We eat a crispy rice cereal called Rice Twice. We get it at Wild Oats. It's pretty good.

Kellogg's RK, not gluten-free. I had some gluten-free ones around here, I think they were made by Nature's Path. I honestly found them to be rather anemic and had very little flavour. I finally made them into faux Rice Krispie treats and they weren't half bad after I added a 1/2 cup of chocolate chips!! B)

Erewhon makes a brown rice crspy cereal.

Yeah, and I made "rice krispy treats" with them, and mailed them to my hubby in Iraq, and he loved them! (He is not gluten-free, but he is the "gold standard" for my cooking.)

That is my favorite. I think it tastes just like rice crispies. It even makes the snap crackle pop sounds!

We get the Erewhon ones... and they say quite clearly on the box Gluten Free... I do think they may have some that are not gluten-free, so make sure you find the box that is.

Also, don't feel bad, just learn from this and move on... one of the common pieces of BAD ADVICE that I hear people getting from Dr.s is that cereals like Rice Krispies and Cornflakes are safe for us, THEY ARE NOT... not unless you get a guaranteed gluten-free version.

Nature's Path make an organic, gluten-free rice crisp cereal called "Crispy Rice." Kelloggs Rice Krispies are not gluten-free due to the gratuitous use of barley-derived malt flavor.

I just got a bag with my last Knicknkick (sp) order. And I also did find the Crispy Rice at Whole Foods that I made "sushi" with (rolled up around gummy worms and wrapped in green Fruit Roll-ups)... it was too fun!

Do you have the list of safe and forbidden ingredients? That may help you. Rice Krispies by Kelloggs are not gluten free. They have malt which is made from barley. But there are gluten free versions you can get. Email me if you need any help:)

Some of the worst diet advice i ever got was from drs and nutritionists. Heck, awhile back when i was hospitalized..for breakfast they served me kellogs rice krispies.....and lunch was mushroom BARLEY soup..

and they KNEW i was on a gluten free diet. I had to inform the hospital dietician that these items were not gluten free...and the next mornng the gave me kellogs corn flakes. arrgh

Envirokids Koala Crisp cereal is also a type of crisp rice cereal, but it does have a slight cocoa flavoring to it. They also make crispy puffed rice breakfast bars that are not chocolate.

the thing my mother and i found out was fruit pebbles and cooco pebbles are gluten free.

I had this experience! I was prepared though; my dr. said he would order gluten-free but not to trust that the hospital kitchen would know. Meals came marked gluten-free, but there was always at least one gluten-filled item on the tray. I didn't eat anything they brought up.

Any Kelloggs brand cereal is NOT gluten-free, all use malt favorings.

However, there's lots of main-stream cereals out there that is gluten-free. Neopets berry cunch, cocoa pebbles, fruit pebbles, cocoa puffs, the new Dora the Explore cereals.

Yes.  Now, if you hit your finger with a hammer once, wouldn't you do your best not to do it again?  You have identified a direct connection between gluten and pain.  Gluten is your hammer.  Now you have to decide if you need a medical diagnosis.  Some countries have aid benefits tgat you can get if you have the diagnosis, but you must continue eating a gluten-normal diet while pursuing the diagnosis. Otherwise the only reason to continue eating gluten is social. There are over 200 symptoms that could be a result of celiac disease.. Celiac Disease and Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity  both cause multiple vitamin and mineral deficiency.  Dealing with that should help your recovery, even while eating gluten.  Phosphatidyl Choline supplements can help your gut if digesting fats is a problem,  Consider that any medications you take could be causing some of the symptoms, aside from gluten.

Welcome to the forum, @Ben98! If you have been consciously or unconsciously avoiding gluten because of the discomfort it produces then it is likely that your blood antibody testing for celiac disease has been rendered invalid. Valid testing requires regular consumption of generous amounts of gluten. The other strong possibility is that you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but does not have the autoimmune component and thus does not damage the small bowel lining. It is 10x mor common than celiac disease. There is currently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. Some experts in the field believe it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Having one or both of the primary genes for developing celiac disease does not imply that you will develop active celiac disease. It simply establishes the potential for it. About 40% of the population has the genetic potential but only about 1% develop active celiac disease.

TTG blood test and total IGA tested on many occasions which have always remained normal, upper GI pain under my ribs since 2022. I had an endoscopy in 2023 which showed moderate gastritis. no biopsy’s were taken unfortunately. genetic test was positive for HLADQ2. extreme bloating after eating gluten, it’ll feel like I’ve got bricks in my stomach so uncomfortably full. the pain is like a dull ache under the upper left almost like a stitch feeling after a long walk. I am just wanting some advice has anyone here experienced gastritis with a gluten issue before? thank you

"Conclusions: The urinary iodine level was significantly lower in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, and iodine replacement may be important in preventing osteoporosis"  Body iodine status in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis Low iodine can cause thyroid problems, but Iodine deficiency will not show up in thyroid tests.  Iodine is important for healing, its job is to kill off defective and aging cells (Apoptosis). Skin, brain fog, nails, muscle tone all inproved when I started taking 600 mcg (RDA 150 - 1000 mcg) of Liquid Iodine drops. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis, Iodine exacerbates the rash.  I started at 1 drop (50 mcg) and worked up to 12 drops, but I don't have dermatitis herpetiformis.

That's great news, you can do this.  Let us know how things go and don't hesitate to ask if you have any more questions. Cristiana 😊
