Alkaline Diet And Ic

Okay, I just got officially diagnosed yesterday with IC. I've known that I had it forever, 8 years now and it kept getting worse. So I figured I should at least get the diagnosis and try some treatment. I just started elmiron last night and I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY hope that it helps. But the day before I got diagnosed, I also learned about a special diet for IC called the alkine acid diet. Foods are split up into two groups. A) alkaline foods-most fruits and veggies B.) Meats, proteins (most), starches and sugars. ON the diet, you are allowed 80% from the alkaline food grou and 20% from the acid food group. It is supposed to balance out the acid in your body and heal your bladder. Of course, you should always eat like that even after you are healed because if you are a person who's system creates a lot of acid, then you will likley get a 'sick' bladder again. It goes more into depth but I know I would explain it wrong. I also bought a book and I'm waiting for it.....I'm going to try this diet and also take the elmiron. If the elmiron gives me any side effects, I may get rid of it and just try with the diet. Has anyone ever heard of this diet?

my sister was on an alkaline diet for a while... I don't think it was exactly like yours but I know there was a chart that listed out foods and put them in categories (low/medium/high on either the alkaline or acid side).. and I know the purpose was the same: to get her system less acidic..

I don't think she's still on it now but I can't keep up with her diet as it changes all the time...

I mostly do a diet called "The Body Ecology Diet". It splits foods into acid/alkaline and acid/expansive. Really, western medicine is the only medicine/eating system that doesn't bother with such things...all eastern philosophies do this - Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, etc. The body ecology diet says 80/20 as well - 80 alkaline/20 acid ... in other words, 80% veggies, 20% proteins, for the most part. I think it works very well. She also says 80% full so you have 20% room to digest. I like that too, though I am losing weight on the diet and need to figure out how to squeeze more food into my day.

The Standard American Diet (the one that most folks eat) is very acid forming - lots of cheese and meats. I was a vegetarian prior to this diet, so did not have that issue. But if you need to alkalinize your body, you can also take supplements that help - Enzymedica has an alkalinizing program. Of course, it's best to do it with foods. YOu can also buy Ph strips to pee on and test your Ph - you need to do it first thing in the morning...and actually, you should do this test where you eat a highly acid meal, then test the pee; a highly alkaline meal, then test the pee; and test the pee in the a.m. Each reading should be different and indicates how easily your body handles excesses in either direction.

Anyway, the Body Ecology Diet has worked really well for me. I combine it with the Paleolithic diet, though they are very similar.

      Wow Im a tea drinker and didn't know, perhaps this is why im having issues with my ghost disease.

      She used to take supplements, but her abdominal pain is so debilitating that she hasn't been able to continue.  Her primary care team has been suggesting liquid supplements rather than pill form to help.  They just drew a lot of blood Friday and we are slowly getting all that work back.  I will definitely check into thiamine!  Thanks!

      They have not done that yet.   We are looking at some other treatments to help. And you are correct.  The tickborne illness has been a wild ride.  Our whole family has been battling different tickborne illnesses.  Its expensive and exhausting.

      I cannot tolerate it at all - triggers burning and nausea, ditto aspirin.  Here in the UK I take Paracetamol.

      For back pain, I take a combination of Cobalamine B12, Pyridoxine B 6, and Thiamine B 1 (in the form Benfotiamine), which have an analgesic effect.  These three B vitamins together work way better than those over the counter pain relievers.  Theses are water soluble B vitamins that are easily excreted via the kidneys if not needed.  Thiamine will also help the nausea.
