Does anyone get nauseated when inadvertently ingesting gluten? I have nausea that comes and goes, yet at the same time I can easily eat. Weird

Yes! Before being diagnosed, I was feeling nauseous so often, without it preventing me eating as you say, that I did a pregnancy test! Definitely a symptom of glutening.

I have been sooo careful (but maybe not careful enough!) - Had a few days of no nausea, then whammo Can you still have nausea while you are healing?

I get nauseated a lot and it turns out I have reflux. My doctor told me that while 75% of reflux patients present with heartburn, the other 25% get nausea instead.

So, if you've never been checked for reflux, ask your doctor for some samples of Nexium. If it helps, you definitely have reflux.

Nausea was my first symptom, I think. I used to get it all the time.

Since I've been gluten-free, I still get it when glutened--it seems to come with the D.

I also get very nauseous when I have ingested gluten. I also get D. But I can also be hungry at the same time. Its really weird, but I just accept it as a symptom of glutening

Ever since I've been sick with Celiac I've had bad nausea issues, and for me even being totally gluten-free I still get it pretty bad! And of course it gets worse anytime I come in contact with gluten..

That is VERY interesting!!!! I posted in another topic about my "lack of" GERD symptoms. But, I'm always and forever dealing with nausea issues. I had no idea!!! I'm taking Prevacid, currently. And, I'm not as nauseated anymore, but I assumed it was a gluten issue. Not a reflux issue. Wow!

Nausea is the story of my life.... It has played a huge role in my wheat allergy..I seriously think if you are allergic to wheat you tend to have more stomach issues. I have been sick a very long time and as a result of vomitting I have a heatal hernia and its a lot like reflux but much worse. Once I start vomitting I trigger that hernia and am sick for days. Since being wheat/gluten free I have not had those symptoms unless I have eaten something. It sometimes has a delayed effect.

The one thing that I keep trying hoping to find one that doesn't nauseate me is B-vitamins. It gets me everytime. They say gluten free but still there is something in that vit. that gets me sick even smelling it.

I won't try anymore. I've bought so many brands. I just have to get them thru foods.

I also got nauseated drinking half a beer thinking it wasn't made from wheat. I thought barley was ok with me. Apparently not.

Live and learn.

I get horribly nauseated. The last time I got glutened I spent about 6 hours feeling like I had food poisoning.

Usually a couple of acetaminophen makes it better but I was too nauseous to swallow them.

Some people were saying that they get hungry and nauseous (odd combination) but I don't get that, I can't even think about food.

Guest Mtndog

Oh yeah- I get violently nauseous when glutened- usually my first symptom!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all of your posts. Ya'll make me feel like I am not alone. I tried some Prilosec OTC yesterday and it seems to have helped. I have tested negative to the bug that causes stomach ulcers but I guess it could be another symptom of wheat intolerance. I hate the thought of having to take medicine the rest of my life. I would rather find some alternative solution, but if I can't oh well. I still don't know if I get nauseated b/c of wheat intolerance or some other issue. I have not been diagnosed but happened upon a book at the library re celiac and had virtually all of the symptoms so I eliminated wheat from my diet. It seemed to really help at first and then the nausea started. I think maybe I glutened myself, but I am not sure. So many things I don't know! It drives me nuts

The nausea could be continuing as your body adjusts to the diet. Nausea was (and now still is if I'm glutened) a symptom of mine. It got much better after going gluten-free, and then about 2-3 months after being gluten-free, I was nauseous for a straight month--it was awful. I couldn't eat and just felt miserable most of the time. Then, it went away. Now, nearly 2 years gluten-free, it comes and goes, but never like it was after I went gluten-free. So, maybe it's just your body adjusting, and hopefully it will go away. I've found that pure peppermint really helps, so I eat a lot (or drink it in tea) when I'm nauseous.

Good luck! I hope you feel better soon.

Dear Gaynonna,

I have dealt with debilitating nausea for years. Sometimes I got dry heaves so bad, it made my whole body hurt! Since going gluten-free, I have rough times, but I could have a yeast overgrowth in my system as well. I have been on numerous antibiotics over the years. The nausea is like morning sickness, but I knew that was not it, because I am a virgin! Of course, doctors think all women my age are sluts. That is so annoying. Anyway, I know what you mean. I am gluten intolerant, and must be extremely careful. I tested negative for Celiac, but found I do not tolerate gluten at all. I have reflux bad too, and the Prilosec OTC helps twice a day. Now, since going gluten-free, not only have I been able to lose inches in my hips and waist, but the reflux has gotten better. There were times it was so bad, I would practically sleep sitting straight up. You could be nauseated too due to the fact that you may be experiencing withdrawal from the wheat. It is common to be addicted to what you are allergic too. If that is the case, after you have avoided it long enough, it should go away. I take Phenergan when my nausea is too much to handle. It has a generic too, Promethazine. It is also gluten-free. I saw it on the okay list for meds.

Sincerely,

I have been nauseaus for a year now and gluten free since the beginning of May, I am no longer convinced that my nausea is solely related to gluten intolerance. I am still looking for answers.

Dear rinne,

Have you stopped eating dairy? If not, that may be the trouble. Celiacs and gluten intolerant individuals often are sensitive to casien, a milk protein. It makes me a little gassy, but does not do near the damage gluten does for me. This varies from person to person.

Sincerely,

I think dairy may be part of the problem. Since I went gluten-free I have drastically reduced my dairy consuption but still occassionaly have milk. Cheese doesn't seem to bother me tho. I had a latte this morning and promptly got nauseated. It lasted about 5 hours. UGH I love lattes, but not that much. I am still not sure, but will dedicate several days dairy free and see what happens. I started taking prilosec (for nausea) and it seems to help. I think I am just beginning to learn how little it takes (gluten) to make me feel awful. Thanks for input

Dear gaynonna,

The casien in the dairy could be the trouble. The cheese could be bothering you, but you do not realize it. Delayed reactions with gluten intolerance is not uncommon, nor is it with other food sensitivities and allergies. Lattes have milk. Just a touch of the stuff is near deadly for many people. Gluten effects me much worse than dairy. I still try to avoid the dairy as well most of the time. Each person's body is different. I think you can get soy lattes. Check it out. Places like Starbucks are more health conscious. I hope this helps. B)

I have been gluten free for six weeks, and I am mildly naseated every morning. (Yes, I'm sure I'm not pregnant.) It comes and goes from the time I get up until a hour or so after I get to work. I can eat breakfast without gagging. By lunchtime, I'm fine. I was nauseated at random intervals before going gluten free, but now it's very regular.

I get very nauseated when I try to workout. I never vomit, but I feel like I'm going to explode. Until that subsides, I'll just walk instead of doing a real workout. This symptom is new since I went gluten free.

Last week, I could swear that my friends' beer breath nausated me. The jury is still out on that one. But I felt bad while standing in the bar drinking my water, and I felt better when I left. LOL.

Remember that side effects of Prilosic can be nausea as well. I took that before Nexium and it made me horribly worse and more nauseated than I already was. I stopped the Prilosec and felt wonderful in comparison.

when I am really feeling sick I take Phenegran or Zofran, two prescription nausea meds, and they clear it up within minutes.

I never used to feel nauseous until I went gluten free, then for the first... about six months I'd say, I had nausea off and on that didn't seem to have any pattern, it just came and went on it's own. After the first six months I've only had it when I get glutened or caseined. :) So I figure in my case it had to do with the healing process...

Two home remedies that helped me were hot water or tea with cardamom, or the same with fresh ginger. Or both ginger and cardamom. It's yummy, too.

Some interesting articles regarding the use of Zinc Carnosine to help heal gastric ulcers, gastritis and intestinal permeability. I would consult a medical professional about it's use. https://www.nature.com/articles/ncpgasthep0778 https://www.rupahealth.com/post/clinical-applications-of-zinc-carnosine---evidence-review https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7146259/ https://www.fallbrookmedicalcenter.com/zinc-l-carnosine-benefits-dosage-and-safety/

He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with Celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis after years of suffering without answers. I lost my mind. I lost my job. I lost so much time. I lost Me. Conventional doctors are opulent come near me and the one who did sat across the room, misdiagnosed me, pumped me full of steroids which collapsed my entire hip for 6 months. So without answers I began my holistic journey. Fast forward a couple of years and still struggling with a mysterious whole body itchy, crawling “skin hell”, perfect teeth now deteriorating, thick hair now thinning rapidly and no more than a day or 2 at most relief….An acquaintance opened up a functional medicine practice. Cash only, I found a way. Within a month tests clearly showing my off the charts gluten allergy/sensitivity as well as the depletion of vital nutrients due to leaky gut and intestinal damage. dermatitis herpetiformis was more than likely what I was experiencing with my skin. I was happy. I thought this is easy, eat healthy Whole Foods, follow the diet restrictions and I finally get to heal and feel confident and like myself again very soon! 😔 Supplements are very pricey but I got them and began my healing. Which leads to the other major issue: not working, stay at home Mom of young kids, entirely financially dependent on my man of 7 plus years. He’s never been supportive of anything I’ve ever done or been thru. He controls everything. I’m not given much money ever at a time and when he does leave money it’s only enough to possibly get gas. His excuse is that I’ll spend it on other things. So my “allowance” is inconsistent and has conditions. He withholds money from me as punishment for anything he wants. Since being diagnosed, he’s gained a new control tactic to use as punishment. He now is in control of when I get to eat. He asked for proof of my diagnosis and diet bc he said I made it up just to be able to eat expensive organic foods. Then after I sent him my file from my doctor he then said she wasn’t a real doctor. 😡. I go days upon days starving, sometimes breaking down and eating things I shouldn’t bc I’m so sick then I pay horribly while he gets annoyed and angry bc I’m not keeping up with all the duties I’m supposed to be doing. His abuse turns full on when I’m down and it’s in these desperate times when I need his support and care the most that I’m punished with silence, being starved, ignored, belittled. He will create more of a mess just bc I’m unable to get up and clean so that when I am better, I’m so overwhelmed with chores to catch up that the stress causes me to go right back into a flare from hell and the cycle repeats. I’m punished for being sick. I’m belittled for starving and asking for healthy clean water. I’m purposely left out of his life. He won’t even tell me he’s going to the grocery or to get dinner bc he doesn’t want me to ask him for anything. I have no one. I have nothing. Im not better. My supplements ran out and I desperately need Vitamin D3 and a methylated B complex at the very minimal just to function….he stares at me blankly…no, a slight smirk, no words. He’s happiest when im miserable and I am miserable.  this is so long and im condensing as much as I can but this situation is so complicated and disgusting. And it’s currently my life. The “IT” girl, the healthy, beautiful, perfect skin, perfect teeth, thick and curly locks for days, creative and talented IT girl….now I won’t even leave this house bc Im ashamed of what this has dont to my body, my skin. Im disgusted. The stress is keeping me from healing and I think he knows that and that’s why he continues to keep me in that state. He doesn’t want me confident or successful. He doesn’t want me healed and healthy bc then how would he put the blame of all his problems on me? This journey has been hell and I’ve been in Hell before. I’ve been killed by an ex, I’ve been raped, robbed, held hostage, abused beyond nightmares but the cruelty I’ve experienced from him bc of this disease is the coldest I’ve ever experienced. I’ve wanted to give up. Starving and in tears, desperate…I found a local food pantry in our small town so I reached out just saying I had Celiac and was on hard times. This woman is blessing me daily with prepared gluten free meals, donations, educational info, people who know this disease and how they manage life and the blessings just keep coming. But it’s overwhelming and I feel like I don’t deserve it at all. He just glared and I know he’s going to sabotage it somehow. I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’m so broken and just want peace and healing.

@Colleen H   I am just curious,  when you were tested for coeliac disease, did the doctors find out if you had any deficiencies? Sometimes muscle pain can be caused by certain deficiencies, for example, magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, and potassium.   Might be worth looking into having some more tests.  Pins and needles can be neuropathy, again caused by deficiencies, such as iron and B12,  which can be reversed if these deficiencies are addressed. In the UK where I live we are usually only tested for iron, B12 and vitamin D deficiencies at diagnosis.   I was very iron anemic and supplementation made a big difference.  B12 was low normal, but in other countries the UK's low normal would be considered a deficiency.  My vitamin D was low normal, and I've been supplementing ever since (when I remember to take it!) My pins and needles definitely started to improve when my known deficiencies were addressed.  My nutritionist also gave me a broad spectrum supplement which really helped, because I suspect I wasn't just deficient in what I mention above but in many other vitamins and minerals.  But a word of warning, don't take iron unless blood tests reveal you actually need it, and if you are taking it your levels must be regularly monitored because too much can make you ill.  (And if you are currently taking iron, that might actually be making your stomach sore - it did mine, so my GP changed my iron supplementation to a gentler form, ferrous gluconate). Lastly, have you been trying to take anything to lessen the pain in your gut?  I get a sore stomach periodically, usually when I've had too much rich food, or when I have had to take an aspirin or certain antibiotics, or after glutening.  When this happens, I take for just a few days a small daily dose of OTC omeprazole.  I also follow a reflux or gastritis diet. There are lots online but the common denominators to these diets is you need to cut out caffeine, alcohol, rich, spicy, acidic food etc and eat small regularly spaced meals.   When I get a sore stomach, I also find it helpful to drink lots of water.  I also find hot water with a few slices of ginger very soothing to sip, or camomile tea.  A wedge pillow at night is good for reflux. Also,  best not to eat a meal 2-3 hours before going to bed. If the stomach pain is getting worse, though, it would be wise to see the doctor again. I hope some of this helps. Cristiana
