We live in a neighborhood where it's fun to give out candy. We always get lots of kids and it's nice to visit with all the parents who are out and the neighbors. Many years, it's not too cold and we stay outside with the candy.

This year, we will be moving over Halloween, so no giving out candy :( ....

And while I'm thinking about it, should I change my name now that I'm going to be living in Pennsylvania  Seems like it will be kind of misleading :P

except that I am the crazy old dog lady hag who darkens the house and hides in the back room for halloween

Yeah, but I bet you use it as an excuse to stock up on Nuggets!!

We normally get lots of kids as we live in an old downtown area ... but this year it's all torn up because they're doing lots of work, so I doubt we'll have as many, but you never know.

And while I'm thinking about it, should I change my name now that I'm going to be living in Pennsylvania  Seems like it will be kind of misleading :P

So Alex, in which part of our Fair Commonwealth do you live?

I guess my spelling outed me as a subject of the Queen! I am a proud Canadian. :)

I'm sure many of you have seen these before and I apologize if they have been posted here before but they just make me laugh every time I read them.

Boy, does my boy need one of those floating around his desk. Where do all the pencils go in this house? And why do we always lose the black coloured pencils?

We let the kids in the hospital trick or treat. What we do on Halloween with the help of their parents and volunteers, the kids who are well enough dress up and they get pushed around through the main floor and offices and different departments hand out candy and we get dressed up if we want. Since they said some kids cannot eat candy we do all kinds of things, pencils, stickers. It is a lot of fun and their faces light up. They also make bags up for the children who cannot come to do the Halloween Parade. My hospital has a childrens hospital so about 30 kids do the parade itself, and then there are a lot more that do not come out. We love doing it. I spend my money and efforts on my hospital kids and don't do regular halloweening at night.

this year we are taking my little neice and Tammy's boyfriends daugther who is 3 trick or treating. I will be at home a few days, since I will be getting married that weekend. We will also take any foster kids my mom will have out to Halloween. I love children.

We will be kind of in between the Warrington and Allentown Wegmans. This weekend, while up there looking at houses, we stopped at the Warrington one--it's brand new. It's close enough that I can go every week :)

I think what you do at the hospital at Halloween is great. What a nice way for the hospitalized kids to join into the holiday.

Mark proposed to me on Halloween night in 1974. We had taken my little sister out trick or treating, and then the two of us went out after.

blueeyedmanda Community Regular

ohh, Patti that is so sweet. We are getting married on the night they turn the clocks back.

Since you have been in the Warrington store, that is what ours looks like. It is huge! Lots of gluten free food too. In ther flyer this week there was a big section about gluten free shopping in their store. I am not sure if it just for the Harrisburg flyers or not but it was great to see. :) Another reason to love the store.

Everything is almost set..I was supposed to go for the final dress fitting tonight but due to work issues I had to reschedule.

We need to get our wedding bands. I need to finish my favors.

My wedding is a beach theme. We both love the shore and we decided to incorporate that into the wedding. Our invitations were a couple walking on the beach with the lighthouse in the background.

Our wedding cakes are both sea shells and beachy.

My centerpieces are Wine Bottles which still have corks (thanks to my coworkers for saving them for me) I am making messages in a bottle. The Bottles I have our huge and I will fill them with sand and small shells and roll up a piece of paper and make it look weathered and like a scroll.

My favors are white pails and I am going to put some candy in them wrapped in purple tulle.

I am not carrying flower bouquets and neither are my attendents, we have shell bouquets being made by a crafty friend.

My garter even has a shell on it.

am I leaving anything out?

Dear Everyone,

I have been reading along, just not posting. I have enjoyed every minute of it, too! :) All of the posts are so hilarious! Between Nikki's kitten farting, Susie's kitty journal, tom's ptuamfoolery, Alex's church bulletins, Richard's Viagra cufflinks, Bev's hair craziness and silly Halloween tips (I should try some of those) as well as Tampon crafts, and all of the hair talk, plus the emoticon interpretations, I am cracking up! I am desperately needing to catch-up on the OMG Thread, so this has to be a quick drive-by. I wanted to tell you a bit about my hair.

My hair is kind of scary. It appears to be man-eating. This is quite scary. I always have found it in odd places all over the house to a point, but strands of it have ended up in some very bizarre places that you would never expect. Take for example, my best friend's coat, despite she was not that close to me while we were talking. Chad (my brother) says my hair is like The Blob.

Now, I used to not be concerned. Lately, I am starting to think I should cut it for my own safety. I have considered getting it cut and colored to look like Jennifer Aniston since earlier this year, but fear looking like a Chinese chick trying to be white. However, for a number of months, my safety appears to be an issue with its length. This Spring, I accidentally caught myself on fire while making pancakes. The heating grate is right by the stove, and a strand of my hair blew up into the flame and the next thing I knew, I was ignited! :o

Then, the other day, I was sitting at the table writing and doodling in my notebook, and my pen disappeared. I wondered where it could have gone. It was right there next to me! Suddenly, I heard something fall to the ground. My hair had grabbed my pen and it had just let go of it! Things are starting to get a bit weird.

Sincerely,

Jin

Dear blueeyedmanda,

I am so excited for you! The wedding is going to be fabulous! I know I already know what I want when I get married.

All I need is the groom! I was hoping for maybe John Stamos, but who knows? I would not sneeze at Zach Braff, or Josh Groban either!

Dear Bev,

I love Halloween as well. In Wicca, it is Celtic New Year. You can feel the magick in the air on this night! It is wonderful. The children in their costumes are so cute! Whenever it is warm, I sit out on the porch with a bowl of candy. I entertained a bunch of teenagers last year. It was so much fun!

Dear tom,

Let me see...I have a superfluous word for you. My name in Wicca is different. Practitioners have special names inside the circle. Mine is Weathr Keridwyn Fyrstorm. Your Craft name has to match your birth number numerically, so that is why it is spelled so odd. These names are sacred inside the circle, but who can anyone tell? You say this name to anyone, they will think you are on crack!

Sincerely,

Jin

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Interesting Reading: Clinical trial: B vitamins improve health in patients with coeliac disease living on a gluten-free diet https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19154566/ Safety and effectiveness of vitamin D mega-dose: A systematic review https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34857184/ High dose dietary vitamin D allocates surplus calories to muscle and growth instead of fat via modulation of myostatin and leptin signaling https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38766160/ Safety of High-Dose Vitamin D Supplementation: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31746327/ Vitamins and Celiac Disease: Beyond Vitamin D https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11857425/ Investigating the therapeutic potential of tryptophan and vitamin A in modulating immune responses in celiac disease: an experimental study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40178602/ Investigating the Impact of Vitamin A and Amino Acids on Immune Responses in Celiac Disease Patients https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10814138/

Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!
    • knitty kitty
Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?
    • Scott Adams
I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
