Well, it's not the same as the infatuation you feel when you first start dating .... I guess that explains my love of a good romantic movie!

But, once the infatuation wears off, your love deepens. I love my husband much more today than I did when we got married, yet I don't get those butterfly feelings anymore ... well, not usually.

I think this is actually more of a problem for women than for men .... I think men are just so interested in sex that they always think about it , but for women, we have these ideas that it has to be related to feelings ... it doesn't, it's related to renewing your commitment to each other, to being closer .... just be willing and leave it to him to create interest.

You would have to be around us to understand .... but we look more like a dating couple than a married couple ... I'm the one my friends come to and ask, what's your secret .... I tell them, "just say yes." I've seen more than one marriage improve with that advice .... a woman may have 3564723 things on her honey-do list, but he's got ONE! If you fulfill that ONE, he will kill himself to make you happy.

Oh, and add to that that as Catholics, we use natural family planning ... so there is the time we have to avoid or get pregnant, which makes you really have to take advantage of that other time. It's not like you can always say, tomorrow ....

I couldn't do it Susie . . . I was trying to seriously answer this question and it got too involved, very quickly. So here is the silly (but still true) answer: I hear what my friends and neighbors say about their husbands and see what their husbands are like and thank God every day that I've got the one that I've got. Not that I don't like these guys and appreciate their company, I just wouldn't want to be married to/live with any of them.

Here is an interesting statistic that my husband and I were talking about earlier today. Out of the crowd that we ran around with when we first got out of school, only one out of about a dozen marriages ended up in divorce (at least up till now). I would say most of those couples are celebrating somewhere between their 15th and 20th anniversaries. Most everyone was at least 25 before they got married and I don't think any of them had financial hardships to stress the marriage. OK- not funny - just intersting.

Hmm, that's not our case .... we were 21 and 22, fresh out of college ... I graduated early to get married ... and we were flat broke for the first few years ... Thank goodness we had no credit back then and they didn't give it away so freely or we'd have been in trouble!

We had a mattress and a card table when we got married.

Well, hmm... not sure how to answer...

I was 21 and Brian was 23 when we got married... We had Lucas shortly thereafter. I agree, the first year is hard, in fact the first few years were hard for us. Lots of ups and downs and some uncertainty. Once we were worked our way through that... It's impossible to imagine life without him, as sappy as that sounds.

I agree with Carla, in that it's a deep emotional closeness. I find myself remembering moments... finding out we were pregnant, the births of our children... seeing him walk our babies, singing them to sleep... Sitting over graph paper together, laying out our dream house...

The fact that we can pitch a tent together, without bickering... rowing a boat through the 'gator swamps outside Charleston, and realizing he was terrified but trying not to show it- because I was having fun...

There's annoying things, too. Like when he was throwing a football to Lucas a couple months ago, and I warned him he was having Luke stand too far out, throwing it too hard. And sure enough, a few minutes later, Luke got smacked in the face with a football, landing him flat on his back. That's part of it, too.

He has never surprised me with flowers, but-- On a camping trip with a bunch of friends, he guarded me while I had a (typical) attack of diarrhea out in the woods. If a woman craps in the woods and only her husband is there to hear it...

It's not so much as keeping an attraction for one person alive, as... there just is no one else. That's really it.

And I am TOTALLY glad I didn't get stuck with any of my friends' husbands!!!

Watching Adam take care of me over the past couple years that I have been sick has been really something .... he had the right balance of "get your lazy @ss out of bed!" and sympathy. He knew when I needed rest and when I needed prodding.

Part Deux

Um.......the trivia pubs in Monterey.......'tis a bygone era. The best one was Mucky Duck, on Alvarado - I don't think they do it any more. 'Twas FIERCE and serious trivia. Taht is a STINKY-ass pub - with too many youngsters....the back patio, with giant fire pits, is quite nice, though. The other trivia pub - just a complete GOOFball night - London Bridge Pub on the second wharf......loads of fun....don't know if they do it any more either. WAY more fun when you know people on the teams, and we knew the owners of the bar.......

the BEST pub in Monterey - good gawd, can't remember the name but will think of it - oh! Crown and Anchor - downstairs in a basement - - very British, very cozy, and the food used to be decent.

I don't remember Mucky Duck. Sounds inland. Or post-1990.

Second wharf? At first I thought "now wouldn't I reMEMber that?". Then got a clue that it must be new - w/ my personal definition of New being "since I left.

I bet it's the one the cruise ships use?

But the Crown I remember. Didn't go there much as we had the perfectly bloody authentic Penny Farthing in Salinas. (Did I say something good about Lettuce-town?)
