But somehow, the unanimously agreed-upon pronounciation of w.sauce, where *I* grew up, was

**********wore-stir-shear********

This is the fairly unanimous Canuck pronunciation, as well. Almost...Here it's "wUr-stir-sheer". Kinda...

What are you .. ..H perfectionists.... .. . taunting the Mad PMer??

Our mad PMer would be pronouncing it "wUr-stir-sheers"....

Emily,

Have you ever considered the origin of Lye <not the town> to have been more of an ancestral nickname, boUrne <not the ultimatum> of an ability to brandish an oh-so-caustic wit at will <not the cat> ?

 This is amusing...Will is my DH, as well. I brandish a number of things at him, caustic wit the least of it all...

Peter has all the facts?

1) Do the majority of members of the UN Security Council have their own national versions of this phrase w/ humourous intent?

2) Does most of N. America think this is inclusive or just wrong?

Heavens, there's a lot of answering for Peter to do for us. These last two are interesting queries for a Canadian to ponder...

I'm sure there are regional variations to this expression. I can picture a group of young desert-dwellers, watching their barbaric neighboUrs while smiling and slowly shaking their heads and murmuring, "Bah! Only in Turkmenistan..."

So far 5 out of 10 have had it (me included). Two may have escaped just in time. So far my hubby and kids have remained unaffected, unattacked, uncontaminated. We drive back to Indiana tomorrow . . . maybe they are saving it for the car ride.

Hi, Janet! Sorry you've been sick...and no special post crossing! Now, of course your family has not vomited, for they do not post on here. Ya wanna keep your brood barf, snot and diahrrea-free, keep them away from this forum and the magic post numbers...

OMG! So many questions. I think I can only handle about one at a time.

So, here is gravy answer promised, as best as I can express it. I asked Jacquie and she gave me some written notes. Here goes:

Turkey gravy, using the stock from the giblets. The giblets simmered for hours in water to produce the aforementioned "stock."

2 tbsp corn starch

1 tbsp rice flour

1 pkg Bovril* powdered chicken broth mix

1 cup of giblet stock

Mix the above together and then pour into a pan. Using a medium-high heat stir constantly until the gravy thickens to desired consistency.

For more gravy, increase ingredients proportionately.

To all of those who offered help, thank you.

*Bovril is a Unilever brand, and will clearly disclose any gluten. The powdered chicken broth mix is gluten-free.

Some more for Peter (I need to know)

Why do Kamikaze pilots wear seatbelts?

Why is there an expiration date on sour cream?

Yeah, Peter, C'mon!

Why did Zidane head-butt his opponent in the World Cup final? Do the French not fight with their fists?

I have been pondering this situation for as long as I can remember (maybe age 7-8) and it drives me nuts. It makes me feel like my head will implode if I think any harder. Is the universe infinite? It must end somewhere. But when it ends

Ponder away all!!

I must know the hemispherical, continental & global viewpoints on this "Only in America" phenomenon!!!!!!!!

OMG - *snigger* - poor Peter.

okayyyyyy.......I seem to have, uh, "slipped" into a tripping-and-falling mode.

Last night, in one of the MANY trips to let Stinker out and in and out and back in and OUT and then back in blah blah blah blah........ad nauseum (veeeeeeery tedious, BTW, because she has intestinal issues, so keeps wanting out - and most interesting that this ONLY happens at night - she stays in her bed now virtually ALL day long - at night, wants out a million times - and then barks at nothing - - because she is DEAF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so she's doing protective barking just in CASE there are any sounds........ )

Okay. Anywho. In one of those many trips I didn't turn the lamp on, and tripped over something on the floor - god knows what - and fell onto the canister vacuum cleaner that was put in my room (simple passive tense) a couple of days ago in hopes of SERIOUS cleaning.....so....fell on the vacuum cleaner - now am again slightly concussed wtih angry red mark and distinctly tumescent area (i.e., swollen, ha ha ha) on forehead..........

must watch out......this is becoming a pattern......

Tom--I love your new pic--who is the cute kitty?

Everyone--

I had the most delicious gluten-free pizza last night! I did the crust from the "Gluten Free Kitchen" cookbook (simple) and topped it with sauce, pepperoni and a little sprinkle of sheep's milk pecorino romano cheese.

Also found delicious snack food--it's called "Lesser Evil"--kettle corn with different flavorings. They're all gluten-free and labeled as such, which I love. I got the maple/pecan flavor and it was fantastic.

On a different note, Mark and I were out doing a few errends last night and I was scarfing down the afore mentioned Lesser Evil. A very pleasant ride, and then-- we hit a deer :o It came out of the woods right in front of our car--Mark hit the brakes and swerved and was able to stop just in time for him, but the one that came out right after hit our car as it ran away across the street. Thank goodness there was not a car close behind us.....

By the time we pulled over and got out of the car, the deer were gone, and the damage was very slight--just one headlight was pushed in a bit. No blood or anything like that, so I hope the poor deer is ok.....I felt like I was going to throw up right after it happened.

Your poor noggin! I hope this isn't getting to be a pattern :(

Patti! :o Oh how traumatic!!!!! I would have wanted to throw up, too. So glad it wasn't worse - glad you two are okay.....I hope the deer ARE okay!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG I LOVE Lesser Evil popcorn!!!!!! There is one that's light and dark......maybe chocolate and vanilla kettle corn - - TOTALLY YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:)

(about my falling - - I just have to make sure to turn the LAMP on when I let Stinker out all night.......I tripped over the trunk that's at the foot of my bed.......if the LIGHT had been on I would have SEEN it..... )

 ... I do things like that (strategically place vacuum in the vain hope the mere sight of it will spur me on......invariably doesn't work... )

...but ouch on the head :( apply witchhazel :)

Oh Patti! :( ..it must have shook you up ...and what a shame after your great day of discoveries

elye Community Regular

Oh, wow...everybody's been so busy tripping, falling, hitting mammals, letting mammals in and out and in and out...just look at what I miss!

Patti: That is a very traumatic experience. I know I would have barfed. Ontario has racked up something like thrice (three times  ) the number of fatalities from vehicle/deer collisions this year. Something about global warming? Bah, everybody just blames every thing on G.W. ....HEY! Maybe Kamikazes wear seatbelts, and Zidane used his head, because of global warming. Yes, that must be it.

Susie: This is awful. You keep trippimg over things! :( I think it's global warming.

Uh - oh....and not a drop of wine....

 well of COURSE there was wine, you silly!!!!!!!! But.... not enough to make me a stumbling drunkard, for Pete's sake.......

and speaking of Pete, just who IS this Peter in "for Pete's sake?" Is it our Peter? OMG is HE that Peter? Anotehr question for Psawyer!!!!!!!!!!!

:P

Susie: This is awful. You keep trippimg over things! :( I think it's global warming.

 is it? is global warming causing these mishaps? hmmmmmm....in the case of conking my head on strategically-placed appliances, I have to blame my own idiocy of not turning on the light.....'tis a simple way to avoid the sleepy crashing around in the black of night.

Yes, I've been suspecting for some time that our Psawyer is, in, fact, the very Pete in "for Pete's sake"...I think he's our man. He may very well be the Peter in "Peter the Great", as well. And who do you think Elton John wrote Peter's Song for? Indeed, there could be a whole lot more about Peter that we're just beginning to understand. He knows the answer to everything...he somehow created some incredible gravy...What other astounding surprises are coming our way?!

I'm home! I'm home! MORE fluids arrived prior to departure but I shan't go into detail (however, the count is up to six). Most importantly, NOTHING happened on the 9 1/2 drive.

Patti, glad you and the deer seemed to have both scraped through. I know you've seen Grey's Anatamy, so if something serious had happened, you would have known what to do. You had a defibrulator with you didn't you? You might check into getting a deer whistle . . . not foolproof but can't hurt.

So Susie, why didn't you turn on the light? To save energy perhaps? Saving energy will help reduce global warming . . . yep, Emily is right. It all comes back to global warming.

Is Peter the pumpkin eater? Is he the peck of pickled peppers picker?

jerseyangel Proficient

Yea! Janet's back with lots of excess fluid but hilarious just the same :D 6-- :(

A defibrulator--yes! A must have out here. I do think we should have deer whistles--I asked Mark about them, and he said--"I've heard they do work, and that they don't"

What does that mean???????

   why, that's right! Patti would CERTAINLY have known what to do, alas, the poor deerS ran away.............

Janet is quite mad. so good to have you back. good thing no fluids on the heinous drive.

I have watched Once, the movie, have to say it was really lovely adn charming. I expected more, plotwise, but then realized it was more about the beautiful performances and nuances, and the gorgeous music.....'tis a quiet little film. After I read about it on Wikipedia, I now like it even more. :)

From the "Cured" thread . . .

Look everybody!!!! Emily's sober!!!!!

Yes...upon sober second thought, you just may be right, Tom...

Well . . . she was an hour and a half ago. Guess that could have changed by now. (<--inebriated emoticon)

Was too askeert to post that on the actual thread. Some people don't like sillies

So Sillies, does any one want to come over to my house for a late dinner? I am making homemade stuffed shells.

I am breaking in my new pot set that John bought me for Christmas, my old ones were getting banged up and rusted from stuff. So since I have been getting into the cooking/baking thing John bought me this nice set at Weggies and it is stainless steel. I am so excited.

So I just popped the shells in the oven, will be done in 30 minutes.....anyone coming? We have lots of room around the big dining room table.

So I got Patti down for wine, everyone else?

We should have a gathering for all of our local celiac friends, we can all bring a gluten-free meal and it will be our own potluck.

That and my nutritionist also said that drinking cider is one of the worst drink choices for me, given that I have candida overgrowth.  She said the combination of the alcohol and sugar would be very likely to worsen my candida problem.  She suggested that if I drink, I go for clear vodka, either neat or with a splash of cranberry.   So in summary, I am giving ciders a rest.  Whether it's a gluten risk or sugars and yeast overgrowth, its just not worth it.

While plain, pure tea leaves (black, green, or white) are naturally gluten-free, the issue often lies not with the tea itself but with other ingredients or processing. Many flavored teas use barley malt or other gluten-containing grains as a flavoring agent, which would be clearly listed on the ingredient label. Cross-contamination is another possibility, either in the facility where the tea is processed or, surprisingly, from the tea bag material itself—some tea bags are sealed with a wheat-based glue. Furthermore, it's important to consider that your reaction could be to other substances in tea, such as high levels of tannins, which can be hard on the stomach, or to natural histamines or other compounds that can cause a non-celiac immune response. The best way to investigate is to carefully read labels for hidden ingredients, try switching to a certified gluten-free tea brand that uses whole leaf or pyramid-style bags, and see if the reaction persists.

This is a challenging and confusing situation. The combination of a positive EMA—which is a highly specific marker rarely yielding false positives—alongside strongly elevated TTG on two separate occasions, years apart, is profoundly suggestive of celiac disease, even in the absence of biopsy damage. This pattern strongly aligns with what is known as "potential celiac disease," where the immune system is clearly activated, but intestinal damage has not yet become visible under the microscope. Your concern about the long-term risk of continued gluten consumption is valid, especially given your family's experience with the consequences of delayed diagnosis. Since your daughter is now at an age where her buy-in is essential for a gluten-free lifestyle, obtaining a definitive answer is crucial for her long-term adherence and health. Given that she is asymptomatic yet serologically positive, a third biopsy now, after a proper 12-week challenge, offers the best chance to capture any microscopic damage that may have developed, providing the concrete evidence needed to justify the dietary change. This isn't about wanting her to have celiac; it's about wanting to prevent the insidious damage that can occur while waiting for symptoms to appear, and ultimately giving her the unambiguous "why" she needs to accept and commit to the necessary treatment. This article might be helpful. It breaks down each type of test, and what a positive results means in terms of the probability that you might have celiac disease. One test that always needs to be done is the IgA Levels/Deficiency Test (often called "Total IGA") because some people are naturally IGA deficient, and if this is the case, then certain blood tests for celiac disease might be false-negative, and other types of tests need to be done to make an accurate diagnosis. The article includes the "Mayo Clinic Protocol," which is the best overall protocol for results to be ~98% accurate.

Welcome to the community! Generally, for a gluten challenge before celiac disease blood tests, Tylenol (acetaminophen) is considered safe and should not interfere with your antibody results. The medications you typically need to avoid are those like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) that can cause intestinal irritation, which could potentially complicate the interpretation of an endoscopy if you were to have one. However, it is absolutely crucial that you confirm this with either your gastroenterologist or your surgeon before your procedure. They know the specifics of your case and can give you the definitive green light, ensuring your surgery is comfortable and your celiac testing remains accurate. Best of luck with your surgery tomorrow
