Final show went fabulously. And there was wine at the cast party. Came home at 8? 9? and I passed out immediately. The Pirate fell asleep in his chair. I think we slept in til 8 this morning. The Pirate's been watching youtube videos about rebuilding sewing machine motors, and I've been scrubbing my auction purchases. and eating cheese. The breadmaker was essentially spotless when I bought it (the volunteers clean everything with Q-tips), so I've soaked/scrubbed the bread pan twice, and it's in an ammonia soak now. The rest of the machine I scrubbed down with ammonia and rinsed well. I'm thinking the Pirate will get the part of the bread that touches the paddle, but the rest of it should be fine.

I am looking forward to a few days of doing absolutely nothing.

The Pirate's been watching youtube videos about rebuilding sewing machine motors,

Now I've got a perfectly good sewing machine motor, with a perfectly good sewing machine attached to it, just going begging. The only problem with it - it is in New Zealand (220V) while the motor is 110. Brain out of gear during our rush move 10 years ago. :rolleyes: Yeah, I know there are transformers, but nowadays I just contemplate it and think, gosh, I wish Jess could have this sewing machine motor (or I would be doing that if I were there with it :P )

At any rate, let The Pirate worry about it and enjoy your rest.

So

Went downtown with the Pirate to check out parking for the 4th, and run a couple errands. Get back to the house and hear all the chickens 'alarming' in the back. Go back, see nothing, all chickens present and accounted for, then the Pirate says "Where's the baby?" Yep, no chipmunk chick. Pirate immediately sets up the new trap, plus the cool wooden one he made from scraps. I herd all the chickens into the pen and search the yard for remains. Nothing. I sit on the lawn swing while the Pirate carves a new trigger stick for the home made trap. We get it set up and sit quietly for a few minutes. Suddenly, from the neighbour's yard comes "PEEP PEEP PEEP PEEP PEEP PEEP PEEP"

I run through the bushes while the Pirate watches, and the chipmunk comes running up behind the pen. I climb through the trees and shrubbery to carefully shoo the baby to the front where the Pirate waits to open the pen just enough for Peepers to run in under her mom's wing.

The Pirate then tells me I'm taking this chicken raising thing too personally. I look at the two traps he set within minutes of discovering the missing chick. uh huh.

It's amazing how attached you get to the little buggers. Especially the ones that are attached to humans. One of mine used to follow me everywhere I went :)

You're probably right . . . I'd end up getting too attached and spending way too much money on shelter, fencing, electronic surveillance cameras and alarms. Plus, I doubt that my pirate landlubber would build me any critter traps.

Soooo I have do not chickens, and I am not a pirate... but we have had an adventure!

Friday night, my wife (she is not a pirate either...) and I were watching Eureka on NetFlix when a big storm comes through the area ( details Open Original Shared Link ) and we loose power. Okay... not so bad... cept it is record breaking heat wave at same time! So I rush out next morning and get a generator. Had to be beat an army of husbands doing the same, but I way out smarted them all and win! Great, got generator.. but it is missing parts so back on the road to get parts. Need gas... oh well they don't have power either! Yay! All we need now is the Cat in The Hat to start singing "Here we go go go!" Again I do battle with an army of husbands out looking for gas stations, and win! The next hour finds me running extension cords, rushing as we now well into 20 hours with out power. Fire up our new trusty generator plug in fridge, and get some fans going. By now it is over 90 in the house, heat index of 115-120 outside... and we try to get some sleep. We cannot sleep much do to dripping with sweat heat and a loudly panting dog. Oh did I mention the noise laws prevent us from running generator at night? So no fans, and fridge is back off! Yep we on an adventure!

By Sunday afternoon the power company finally tells us "Yeah, you wont have power again till 7/7 or 7/8" and they join the bad news forces with the weather peeps who say "Yeah, expect triple digit temps for a while, with high humidity."

So I did some long hard thinking (several minutes worth!) and called my Mom who has power.... and said, "Hey we coming for a surprise visit, ain't that grand?" And she was like, "If you bring the grand kid, sure!" So we pack up and drive 500+ miles to mom's house. For those keeping track it is now late Sunday night, and there has not been power since Friday evening. he power company said at least six more days of no power. Before leaving we literally gave away all the food in our fridge so that it would not spoil. (talk about gluten free fridge!)

So Monday morning my boss is like, "Well you can work remotely for now, but once the power is back on you need come back." So I am thinking... sure drive back next Saturday... no biggie! I work all day Monday remotely and then get a text from my neighbor, "Yeah, like power is back on. Been on most of the day."

Gave away all our food, drove 500+ miles... and the power was on less then 12 hours later! :lol::o

So this AM I have to call my boss and say, "Yeah so the power is back on... but I am still 7-8 hours drive away from the office..." Should be fun!

Now I just need to find a Thingamajigger! :P

Wow, Vincent.... . . ...an adventure, to be sure..... . . but glad to hear your power is back on. We've been lucky in southern Ontario -- the big outages haven't reached us up here. And it is HOT. 34 C and sick humidity......And as I type this, I see a middle-aged neighbour out starting his 10k run. :blink: One o' these July days, he just ain't gonna come back.... :unsure:

My daughter just bought a trumpet for $35 at a garage sale here in Indy a couple of weeks ago. I'm telling ya, garage sales are the way to go!

Omg--as I was reading, I thought--I'll bet they get there and the power comes back on! Oh well, Tim got a nice visit with grandma and you get to come home and go grocery shopping :D

So chatted with my boss... and the deal I worked out is we drive back on Thursday during business hours, and they do not doc me for being out at all. Might hate HAVING to work for a living, but working at Liberty University is darn good place to work. :D

Heh, this storm going to end up costing us between $1000-$1500 BUT we are so much better prepared for next time. The only thing I need to do is get the parts to wire the generator safely into the main power and get that hooked up properly. Its big enough to power our little place with out much issue, except the central air.

Oh, we decided a long time ago that its silly to say "we will laugh about this later" when you can laugh about it NOW! :D

No critters captured last night, could have been the coyote that scared the chickens. Trying out my breadmaker. I had to divide the Pamela's mix in half since it's for a 2 pound loaf, so we'll see how it goes.

Took some Slushies to my boys working at the Fireworks tent about 3:30. M is working in a well ventalated section and its stinking hot! J was working in the back, in a section that forms 3 walls of shelves. At the open end, they had a giant fan pushing hot air around that box-like area. It was like a convection oven! Supposed to be a little hotter tomorrow. I'm going to send some food he can cook in there for his lunch! :o

My adventure yesterday was going hiking, getting better than two dozen bug bites, twisting my ankle, and getting a huge blister on the other foot. Got to watch the sunset over the water and snuggle though! Think I'll keep the hiking to a few hours at a time from now on.....

      It seems like you have two choices--do a proper gluten challenge and get re-tested, or just go gluten-free because you already know that it is gluten that is causing your symptoms. In order to screen someone for celiac disease they need to be eating gluten daily, a lot of it--they usually recommend at least 2 slices of wheat bread daily for 6-8 weeks before a blood screening, and at least 2 weeks before an endoscopy (a colonoscopy is no used to diagnose celiac disease). Normally the blood panel is your first step, and if you have ANY positive results there for celiac disease the next step would be to take biopsies of your villi via an endoscopy given by a gastroenterologist.  More info on the blood tests and the gluten challenge beforehand is below: The article includes the "Mayo Clinic Protocol," which is the best overall protocol for results to be ~98% accurate. Here is more info about how to do a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood panel, or for an endoscopy: and this recent study recommends 4-6 slices of wheat bread per day:   Not to discourage you from a formal diagnosis, but once you are diagnosed it may lead to higher life and medical insurance rates (things will be changing quickly in the USA with the ACA starting in 2026), as well as the need to disclose it on job applications. While I do think it's best to know for sure--especially because all of your first degree relatives should also get screened for it--I also want to disclose some negative possibilities around a formal diagnosis that you may want to also consider.

      Yes.  Now, if you hit your finger with a hammer once, wouldn't you do your best not to do it again?  You have identified a direct connection between gluten and pain.  Gluten is your hammer.  Now you have to decide if you need a medical diagnosis.  Some countries have aid benefits tgat you can get if you have the diagnosis, but you must continue eating a gluten-normal diet while pursuing the diagnosis. Otherwise the only reason to continue eating gluten is social. There are over 200 symptoms that could be a result of celiac disease.. Celiac Disease and Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity  both cause multiple vitamin and mineral deficiency.  Dealing with that should help your recovery, even while eating gluten.  Phosphatidyl Choline supplements can help your gut if digesting fats is a problem,  Consider that any medications you take could be causing some of the symptoms, aside from gluten.

      Welcome to the forum, @Ben98! If you have been consciously or unconsciously avoiding gluten because of the discomfort it produces then it is likely that your blood antibody testing for celiac disease has been rendered invalid. Valid testing requires regular consumption of generous amounts of gluten. The other strong possibility is that you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but does not have the autoimmune component and thus does not damage the small bowel lining. It is 10x mor common than celiac disease. There is currently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. Some experts in the field believe it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Having one or both of the primary genes for developing celiac disease does not imply that you will develop active celiac disease. It simply establishes the potential for it. About 40% of the population has the genetic potential but only about 1% develop active celiac disease.

      TTG blood test and total IGA tested on many occasions which have always remained normal, upper GI pain under my ribs since 2022. I had an endoscopy in 2023 which showed moderate gastritis. no biopsy’s were taken unfortunately. genetic test was positive for HLADQ2. extreme bloating after eating gluten, it’ll feel like I’ve got bricks in my stomach so uncomfortably full. the pain is like a dull ache under the upper left almost like a stitch feeling after a long walk. I am just wanting some advice has anyone here experienced gastritis with a gluten issue before? thank you

Skin, brain fog, nails, muscle tone all inproved when I started taking 600 mcg (RDA 150 - 1000 mcg) of Liquid Iodine drops. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis, Iodine exacerbates the rash.  I started at 1 drop (50 mcg) and worked up to 12 drops, but I don't have dermatitis herpetiformis.
