- the new photo on my fridge is Dr. McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey - go figure!) - oh my gawd - - sexiest man alive (I just KNOW he'll be the one on People mag whenever they do that).....I also find De Niro extremely attractive - very sexy .....also am in love with the younger Robert Duvall - heck, he's even sexy now
.

I'm with you on the older man thing!

OMG Nikki - - am putting highlights in hair today - - using foil - lifting color completely and then adding dark ash blonde - - - am so scared - help me!!!! :o:lol:

Oh Susan, you do get yourself in a pickle!

Be sure to let the bleach take beyond the orange stage! (It may take longer than it says on the packet)

Another tip is to keep your head warm whilst the bleach is on,..insider tip....put a plastic bag on your head (Taking care not to cover face!) but make a hole at the top of the bag so your head gets a little venilation  (Gawd, I wish I were there to supervise!! )

Keep checking the strands so they don't get over done by unwrapping the foil ,give it a little tug.If it starts to stretch like elastic then it's time to get the bleach off QUICK!!!..But please don't let it get to that stage :o

(Cyber hairdressing is so hard! )

You must tell us how it turns out  (I think!)

hey ladies-----i missed this thread---or i was ignoring it. do think that could be some sort of sub-concious attempt to avoid my age?LOL!! i haven't read everything---but i've seen skin and hair coloring covered.

get this------at 40 years old, i was pregnant, wearing braces, and had acne.

how do you cover the gray in your hair, but still keep the natural highlight colors in your hair----please tell me it can be done!!!

CarlaB Enthusiast

Christine, my husband bought an infrared sauna for me, and it's drawing out toxins, thus I have some acne right now .... I'm getting braces next week (TMJ problems), but I'm not pregnant (though I sometimes feel bloated and nauseous) ... I'm 43.

I have no idea on the hair question. I'd see a pro! Maybe they can do some highlights and lowlights.

YES! This is what I want to do too!

I see a professional, lol. She somehow does it. I ocassionally get more pronounced highlighting done (hence the nearly blonde hair last summer), cuz sometimes I like it chunky, but if I just do my normal thing every 5 weeks, she does the color and somehow I have subtle lights and darks but no gray. I think it's because she just puts the color mostly near the roots, but then combs it through a little just at the end before she puts the plastic cap on and sits me under the dryer. My whole process, hair cut, color, dryer, styling and all takes just about exactly one hour.

Welcome Christine! Yes, we talk about skin, hair, movies, and boys....(well, film stars anyway)....guess we're still teenagers at heart!!

My niece (who's now 23) lived with me in Monterey the summer she was 16. I had a girlfriend visit, we've known each other since we were 3. So....my friend and I were sitting there making pro and con lists of our respective boyfriends....why we SHOULD stay with them and why we should NOT stay with them....howling wtih laughter....but very serious about the whole thign. My niece just cracked up - said, well I can see that things don't change much, do they?

Have just received stern admonishment over the phone from my best friend...."you are heading into dangerous territory with this highlight thing....." :o:lol:

Nikki - - wish you were here!

Brave....or stupid.....not sure :lol: Foil and bleach are on my head, only in three spots (test procedure but I wouldn't add much more than this anyway), near the face. Will wash bleach off soon....then apply color....dear gaaaawd....... :o

p.s. it is MUCH harder than I thought, applying evenly......

Wow, I got braces at 43, had them for three years, and an upper retainer for another year after that. It takes longer as an adult. Make sure you own a water-pik (or similar thing) instead of having to floss (flossing takes forever between braces, and is the most frustrating thing in the world), and an electric toothbrush. Those are life-savers when having braces! I don't think I would have lasted without them.

CarlaB Enthusiast

Thanks, Ursula, I think you gave Chloe that same advice when she got hers and I bought her a Water Pik based on your recommendation.

I can't stand stuff between my teeth, so I floss at least twice a day. These spacers are driving me crazy!

The system this ortho uses is a little different than the traditional so it's only supposed to take a year to a year and a half. Then I'll have an invisible, permanent retainer behind my teeth and a guard to wear at night since I grind.

Jestgar Rising Star

In high school I had several months with green hair and as an adult I spent 1 day with hair that looked like a ladybug (don't ask)

AndreaB Contributor

So what do you like better......orange or green?

I'm sorry, good thing you'll be able to get it taken care of tomorrow.

Can you spike it and pretend that you meant for it to look that way?

On a more serious note--is it possible that hair color can cause the immune system to freak out? I've been wondering because I did highlights a month or two before my thyroid went kaflooie, and then I stopped with the highlights. fAst forward 19 years: I started with all-over hair color. I also started with gas and bloating and the back-and-forth loose-stools/mild constipation stuff. I gave hair coloring one final try just a few weeks before my DH type rash appeared on my arms.

Could be total coincidence, of course--but what if it isn't?

:lol::lol:

Look at it this way--tomorrow at this time, it'll be all fixed! We've all done something like that at least once. A couple years ago, I tried to lighten mine myself with the then-new L'Oreal "For Brunettes Only". It was supposed to safely lighten brown hair in one step--only not! I had a orange-ish, dull brown! At least these things can be fixed!

Jestgar--a ladybug? Love to hear about that one :D

Lisa,

Sounds like you're having a nice vacation! Yes, the NYC traffic is daunting if you're not used to it.

Have a safe trip home! :)

Call me suspicious but I see a plot, after all how could anyone not sympathize with your need for nuggets once your hair was green.:lol::lol:

Fess up, it's all about the nuggets, isn't it?

Susan, I'm sorry it didn't work, and I'm trying hard to not laugh. This reminds me of the scene in "Anne of Green Gables" where she tries to dye her hair black and the same thing happens. I think I'll stick with my natural color - you've convinced me.

I agree with Rinne about the nuggets!! :o

what is this, a nugget conspiracy??? :o:lol:

yup, two things I've done TO MYSELF recently....(although, you'd all be so proud, didn't eat enough nuggets to get sick this time!) and BTW I never expect sympathy when I've over-nuggetted myself...

Fiddle - Faddle....the only thing I've heard about hair color is that the blacks and browns cause bladder cancer...heard this from my friend's mom, a breast cancer survivor...dont' know if this is true or not.

Or at least have a pro do it!!

Yup, definitely don't try this at home....dang, I just want highlights....why is it so complicated.....and expensive

Lisa - have fun and be safe - can't imagine driving in NYC!

Cecile.....so glad you're seeing the doctor....we just always have to press on and keep trying for wellness and health...I know it's a bummer. HUGS to you :)

am hiding in the back bedroom  ...my Stepford neighbor came over to pay me for watchign the dog this weekend - fortunately my doorbell doesn't work - I ignored the barking - can't be seen like this..... :o she would not understand

Ursa Major Collaborator

Well, Susan, I am afraid I haven't laughed this hard in ages, tears were just streaming down my face when I read about your hair disaster. So, even if maybe you look like a clown temporarily, you did a good deed by cheering me up. I can understand not wanting to answer the door, though.

I was also thinking of Anne of Green Gables, I love that part where she dyes her hair green, too funny. It sure cured her of wanting to change her beautiful hair colour (at least by herself  ).

Floridian, what is your name? Some people call you Celia, and others Cecile, and I'm confused and don't know what to call you!

Lisa, the traffic is horrific in NYC, and nobody obeys the traffic lights, what chaos! Not even my husband (who is used to Toronto traffic) would drive there when we where there for a conference a few years ago. He returned the rental car when we got to the hotel (we rented it in Washington, D.C. and drove through Pensylvania County). We just used taxis and buses and walked while there, instead of driving. I wouldn't even try it, I don't drive in Toronto, either, if I can help it, too stressful.

No coincidence. Recent revisions to gluten challenge guidelines call for the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten (about the amount in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of 3 weeks. If possible, I would extend that two weeks to ensure valid testing.
    • SilkieFairy
Thank you both for the replies. I decided to bring back gluten so I can do the blood test. Today is Day #2 of the Challenge. Yesterday I had about 3 slices of whole wheat bread and I woke up with urgent diarrhea this morning. It was orange, sandy and had the distinctive smell that I did not have when I was briefly gluten free. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but the brain fog is back and I feel very tired.

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!
    • knitty kitty
Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?
