Horrible Biopsy Experience

So, now that I'm more coherent I can explain my experience. I have been to many doctors for many things and have NEVER been treated like this or found anyone to be this rude.

After waiting an hour and half after my scheduled time b/c the same day surgery center was packed (standing room only!), the doctor walked into the procedure room. He never made eye contactwith me and gave a half-@$$ apology as he walked by. I introduced him to my husband and he barley said hello, never looked up from what he was reading or extend his hand. RUDE! Once my husband left the room, the doctor never said another word to me. He just told me to open and close my mouth while he stuck the mouth piece in without telling me what he was doing, he spoke around me while I was laying there and asked the nurses if I were late (I took the mouth piece out and responded to him myself.), and the *biggie* was that he started to inject the sedative into my IV without telling me!!!!!! Can you believe it!? :angry: After I saw him inject the second syringe, I pulled out the mouth piece again and firmly asked if he were in fact administering the sedative; he flatly stated, "yes". My little heart moinitor was beeping away after that!

I honestly found the whole experience to be very unsettling and down right rude. He seemed to have lost the fact that I was a person not just a procedure. Have any of you had any experiences like this? *Nothing* like this has ever happened to me with a doctor. I'm gonna get my results and then I'm done with him. I don't care how much knowledge he has and how "specialized" he is in Celiac Disease. No one deserves to be treated like this. I may not even go back; I may just call for the results because if they are positive I'll be finding a new GI anyway. What a jerk!

What a horrible way to be treated! That dr obviously has no bedside manner. :angry:

Unfortunately, it's way too common for some specialists to be like that (I'm betting my GI will be like that, just based on her curt manner during my initial appointment.) I've found anesthetists to be especially bad/cocky. And you wouldn't believe some of the chatting and comments surgeons make during procedures.

The worst can be during a cesarean section when the mother is awake and aware the whole time, and the surgeon & staff are chatting about all sorts of irrelevant stuff and completely ignoring the mother who is going through what is supposed to be the most amazing moment of her life: having a baby.

I feel kinda bad because I was one of the people who told you it was nothing to be afraid of--and then this happened. :ph34r:

The famous saying is that specialists "are a special breed." I found that true on dental specialists also. They are a breed of their own. Most of the ones I have met have no manners either and they think they are royalty. I have met a few who were just terrific but most seem to be like the one you met.

So sorry you had such a terrible experience :( . Some doctors, although they may be "specialists" in their field, just don't have a very good bedside manner.

I have had my fair share of these, and it isn't worth it to stay with them, imo. I think their should be a partenership between patient and doctor, and it definitely sounds like you didn't have this with yours.

Well, if it is any consolation to you, doctors that act like that tend to get sued a lot more than nice ones... :P

Sorry you had such a bad experience....I at least hope you get teh answers you're looking for, and then switch to a wonderful doctor after that.

I've unfortunately had a similar experience with my previous OB/GYN doctor. He was awful! Since then, I get recommendations from numerous people before choosing any dr. My current OB/GYN, our allergy/asthma dr., and our GI doctor are probably teh 3 best doctors of any kind I have ever gone to my entire life. I actually found our GI doctor by posting a "help" ad on craigslist. I had dozens of responses and when the same name kept popping up, that's who I ended up using. She spent over an hour with us on our initial appt, was so thorough, understanding, patient, etc. We had to wait 4 1/2 months to get in but I think it was worth it. If you haven't used craigslist before, you might give it a shot. Or if you can find other people on this board in your area who could recommend someone that would be even better. Good luck to you!

If you do leave that doctor, I would recommend writing a very calm, polite letter telling him exactly how awful you felt during the procedure and why, and explaining that that is why, no matter how skilled he is technically, you are looking for another doctor. Then at least, he doesn't have the excuse that he doesn't realize this, and he won't do it to another patient (hopefully).

What a maroon!!!! Geez, doctors like that deserve to get slapped silly!!! :angry:

Another one who thinks he's God, obviously........ <_<

Kristy, I am sorry you had to go through this, I wouldn't stay with somebody like that, either. But Alison is right, you ought to write a letter, explaining why you're switching doctors.

I hope that at least you're getting the answers you are looking for.

Sorry Kristy that you had to have that experience.

I always thought it would be a good idea for Drs to have a feedback system like ebay where you could leave public comments about them ! :)

Please don't feel badly; it wasn't your fault the doctor was such a jerk. The procedure itself truly was a piece of cake. The only downside was that it took me the entire day and night to shake the effects of the sedative. I had the hangover but missed the party! :P

I don't know if I'll get any answers about anything. The only reason I pursued this is because of Zachary and his obvious problems with gluten. I know how the gluten-free diet works so I certainly don't need the doctor's guidance to try it, and I know it's a much healthier diet than I'm eating now.

      Hi Colleen Are you supplementing B12/having injections? I have learned recently that sometimes when you start addressing a B12 deficiency, it can temporarily make your symptoms worse. But it is important not to stop the treatment. Regarding your problems with anxiety, again that is another symptom of a B12 deficiency. I didn't know...

      Hello still dancing around my celiac disease and not getting medically backed up considering Ive been glutenfree since 1994.All my ailments are the core issue of my ghost disease aka celiac disease. Im angery because the "celiac specialist " basically lightly dismissed me.Im extremely angery and fighting for a new primary care physician which is hard to do...

      I totally get this. It's absolutely a grieving process, and it's okay to feel gutted about the loss of those simple joys, especially at 18. Your feelings are completely valid—it's not about being ungrateful for your amazing boyfriend, it's about mourning the life you thought you'd have. That "tortured by the smell" feeling is so real. I have learned recently that sometimes when you start addressing a B12 deficiency, it can temporarily make your symptoms worse.  But it is important not to stop the treatment.  Regarding your problems with anxiety, again that is another symptom of a B12 deficiency.   I didn't know what anxiety was until it hit me like a train several months before gastrointestinal issues began, so I can certainly relate.   Two books which helped me hugely were At Last A Life by Paul David (there is a website you can look up) and The Depression Cure: The Six-Step Programme to Beat Depression Without Drugs by Dr Steve Llardi.  Although his book is aimed at people who have depression, following the principals he sets out was so helpful in lessening my anxiety.  Llardi suggests we need to focus on getting enough: - physical exercise - omega-3 fatty acids - natural sunlight exposure - restorative sleep - social connectedness - meaningful, engaging activity   ... and we should feel a lot better. That is not to stay you must stop taking medication for depression or anxiety if you have been prescribed it, but adopting the changes Dr Llardi sets out in the book should really help. Can I just ask two more questions:  1) you say that you are B12 deficient, did they test your iron levels too?  If not, you really ought to be checked for deficiency and, 2) did they check your thyroid function, as an overactive thyroid can be cause rapid heartbeat and a lot of coeliacs have thyroid issues? Im angery because the "celiac specialist " basically lightly dismissed me.Im extremely angery and fighting for a new primary care physician which is hard to do in Northern Cali.So currently without and looking.Im angery that its lightly taken when its extremely serious to the one who has it.My only evidence is a brochure back in the days when I got news letters when I lived at my parents.It was published in 1998.I was diagnosed before any foods eliminated from my diet. Angery doctors don't take seriously when Im clearly speaking.I did write to the medicine of congress and have case number.
