I don't think that makes you a bad Celiac. A lot of Celiacs have been in exactly the same position as you. I just think you should try harder and respect your body and try to take care of your body to your fullest potential. I hope I help you.

Next time you want to be naughty, at least ask for it without the bun ... then worry about cc. What you had was NOT cc, it was crumbs left from taking the bun off. Even small amounts cause damage, but most of us here understand the "I can't take it anymore" feeling.

BTW, are you crazy? If I were going to cheat, it would have been with a Big Mac, fries and a Coke!! :P

VegasCeliacBuckeye Collaborator

Uh, Why wouldn't you just ask for it without the bun?

I do that all the time.

I love quarter pounders on my "cheat day".

Note: "Cheat" means eating fatty food, not ingesting gluten.

Dear CarlaB,

That is what I want too! Oh God I miss those things! Someone said they saw that MacDonald's fries are gluten free. I know that cannot be right. God I wish they were! You what we could do, Carla? We could get Todd Wilbur's books. He has written these great books called "Top Secret Recipes." We could recreate our favorite foods by using them, only replace the gluteny stuff with what we can have!

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl

Hopefully you won't experience any adverse reactions if there was any gluten ingested. However, don't use that as an excuse to try it again. Just because you might feel alright after having a tiny bit of gluten, your insides are still being shredded and the consequences can be far worse than a night on the toilet.

Not trying to be heavy-handed or anything, we all understand the temptations. I make my daughter eat her cereal in a seperate room (God what I'd give for one more bowl of Cap'n Crunch B) ). Just want to make sure you remember what's at stake. It doesn't make you a bad celiac, it just proves you're human.

Hope all is well, stay strong.

P.S.

Crap, now I can't stop thinking about quarter pounders :(

Dear pnltbox27,

I cannot risk even a microscopic amount. I have a violent reaction. I get severely nauseated, get diarrhea, break out in a sweat, start shaking, sometimes my hands go numb, and dry heaves start if I do not get a promethazine down fast enough. They are so severe, that it feels like my insides are emploding. My parents are not gluten free, and I am, so cross contamination is a big problem here. They do not seem to care that my insides are being destroyed.

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl

Well, some good things I see in this:

1) You did have the sense to use a gluten-free bun (though we know that's not good enough)

2) You felt ashamed of your lack of willpower

3) It didn't taste as good, which helps build willpower

4) You freely posted what happened

5) You got a noticeable reaction from it

6) You now have a stronger resolve to stick to the gluten-free diet

Gosh I hate to be the bearer of bad news.........but McDonald's french fries are not gluten free. You can check out their corporate website(I just reaffirmed this) and see how little they serve that is gluten free. There was a lawsuit brought about regarding the french fries....and some press coverage as they had prior claimed to be gluten-free. They no longer claim it.....so sorry!

Dear GFMemphis,

I knew that was not right. I know some others on here got ill from eating them. I was so bummed. :( The good news is, that guy just came out with another book that has their recipe in them! I could get it, and tweak it to be gluten free! ;) As soon as I am able, I will post the gluten free recipe for them on here.

Before even reading the rest....

Change your mindset.... look at it like this... you went without all the other stuff and then you ruin it with a single slip....

I don't agree that "lets hope you don't react" because at least now you have the proof you need... we all need confirmation from time to time and you got it so instead of looking back look forwards and treat this as an experiment in your own self confirmation... pull the positives out of it... you reacted and not only did you pay the price but you confirmed you can't do this..

What may help it to try and find the most sympathetic colleage... explain what is at stake in terms of worst case scenarios (a pretty gruesome death) and say how hard your finding it... and ask them to maybe help you steer clear of temptation....

Funny thing.. it might not be your best friend... sometimes the best help can come from someone who just finds it easier to relate to that one thing... but don't be upset if whom you think should be most supportive isn't.. you just need a bit of encouragement and motivational help.... remember what you went without.... if you cave in then this is IMHO largely wasted and brushing off crumbs is pointless... at this point you mightest well eat the bun as well... if you try to think of it like that I find it easier...

I'm not going to eat the bun so why do the next closest thing...????

The fact your posting this.. you know what you did wrong... and that's between you and you... all we can do is encourage and support you but having someone to intervene and say "whoah" can be a big help when this sort of thing strikes...

I used to be able to go there and just ask for a 'low carb' burger. They were even on the menu but don't know if they still are. I always made sure to ask for no condiments. Of course this was early on before I realized how sick CC makes me but perhaps if you go again you could ask if they still offer the low carb whopper.

Heh, upon reading this, the words "gluten police" popped into my head. Then a scene like something out of a Monty Python sketch formed: Guy pulls up to a drive-thru, and attempts to order a burger. Suddenly an alarm goes off. Two officers jump into view, drag the guy out of his car and proceed to club him repeatedly with corn cobs.

OK, so that would be overdoing it...

Dear RiceGuy,

 I like Monty Python! It is so crazy! You have to love it! In this house, I am the gluten police. No one cares if they make me sick. You know how that is. It is not their intestines being destroyed.

I have only been doing this for a week, and I found myself dreaming about bread! My other half isn't gluten-free so sometimes I have a hard time watching him eat because I'll be sitting there eating carrots and apples and he's having Mexican food.

This is hard, but our health has to come first. When I think about fast food I think about all the pain I used to be in... It passes fairly quickly.

 Missing French Bread,

If you select the text you want to print, then click File>>Print...and choose the option to print only the selection, that should work fine.

Dear RiceGuy,

People are so inconsiderate. I hope that some miracle will happen and I can get my own place soon. Then I won't have to worry about it. My place will have no gluten in it! If people do not like it, too bad! :P

Dear GFMemphis,

Thanks you for the compliments! I just want to make this as easy as possible. This is such an overwhelming situation. It changes your entire life. It is so much work getting information, staying on the phone part of the day. Who has the energy or time to do this, then spend the rest of the day obsessively cleaning?

People who have children especially need the help. Kids will sneak gluten if they get hungry, then get sick. The lists help prevent that.

To print the list and have it readily available, you can save it in MS Word. Just click on the text you want, right click, left click copy, then click on Word and place your cursor. Then right click while in Word, and click on Paste. It will be right there! Next, you save it. Now you can print it anytime you go to the store!

To make it easier, it may be a good idea to make the list by departments. That way, you do not have to run all over the store! Shopping will be much easier. I have created a gluten-free foods folder in my documents to make it simpler.

Dear Megan,

I miss bread too! But like you, not enough to eat it and get sick! I have been gluten free since August of last year. It has definitely saved me from more misery. There are other health issues causing me trouble as well, though. Hopefully, I will have them taken care of soon.

Dear babygirl1234,

I know what you mean. I miss MacDonald's too. However, despite how much I love the fries, I know eating them would be like swallowing poison. My reaction is violent. Healing takes a while for some people. It can takes months or years. Another issue is other food intolerances. Dairy is something I am going to have to give up for a while. My doctor thinks it may be why I have been feeling rough again lately. Keep it up! Eventually, you will feel better.

Sincerely,

NoGluGirl

Yes, some people do get withdrawal from gluten but gluten withdrawal doesn't usually cause gut pain. Maybe more like general body aches and discomfort. We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic. This can damage the stomach lining if you eat it too often. Especially if your stomach lining is already compromised. Ibuprofen inhibits the body's ability to rebuild the stomach's protective mucosal lining. That's why it can cause peptic ulcers. As strange as it may sound, low level irritation/inflammation stimulates the body to rebuild the stomach lining. There are two steps in this rebuilding process known as COX 1 and COX 2. Ibuprofen represses both COX 1 and COX 2. Celecoxcib, a prescription anti inflammatory, inhibits only COX 2, making it less likely to cause damage to the gut lining.

Do you or anyone know alot about ibuprofen  I wasn't sure if I was eating too much apple sauce.   Something is making my pain so much worse  I'm referring to the intense pins and needles in my feet and lower legs.  Jaw actually has tardive dystonia and muscle spasms throughout my back Almost like an opposite effect that a pain reliever would do. I'm fairly new to this. Whatever is going on seems to be worsening  Do people get a withdrawal effect from gluten?  It's extremely painful 😖  I'll post that question or research on the site  Thank you everyone for responding

I think I found a huge culprit for severe reactions to create worsening of my c symptoms. Do people with celiac have sensitivity and /or have opposite reaction to certain medications Where can I find a list ?  I'm new here I'm.wondering why I am getting worse when I take certain medicine...the burning feet.  Rebound muscle pain so intense  How many people get opposite effects or have a horrible attack after these meds
    • Colleen H
Does anyone know if that includes scrambled eggs and healthy smart butter (,gluten free) I add a very tiny amount of margarine less than a teaspoon.  I did no't have any bread    It just seems like no matter what I eat my stomach and nerves over fire and here comes a host of horrible symptoms. My lower abdomen feels horrible, my right leg thigh muscle.. very odd. Jaw pain. Burning feet , joint pain , you name it  The anxiety just creeps up into brain fog. I don't think I could explain this to anyone who is unfamiliar.  Also,  I most likely will not remember posting this until I check it.  This is highly unusual for me because I have an excellent memory.  One weekend before I knew anything about celiac I lost an entire weekend from severe brain fog, confusion, pain, etc.  I honestly thought I was losing my mind. When I think back I recall eating a lot of PBJ sandwiches and turkey sandwiches.  Once again did not know about gluten.  I was just too sick to cook. Do people fast during attacks ?? It seems horrible to keep going through this. I hope I'm not causing my own problems... I wonder if I should fast because I'm not eating gluten .  Chicken ,  scrambled eggs no milk , canned carrots,  gluten free low sugar low fat Greek yogurt which I already posted about 😞 Any suggestions I am open... I am bedridden when this happens to me.  Thank you Celiac community. 🙏🏻❤️
